2021-04-05: Brewers (Anderson) at Cubs (Williams) [Brewers lose, 5-3 -- Offense limited to 4 hits while striking out 12 times]

Eye Black
The thing we needed most was to have Yelich and Hiura hit this season. It's early, but worrying is justified after what we witnessed last year.

I believe that Hiura could end up being a bust, but I refuse to believe that Yelich is this bad.

Hiura is the latest example of why I don’t get too excited about minor league prospects. When I hear “he’s hit everywhere he’s been” one of the first names that comes to mind is Randy Ready. Hiura hits and fields just like him.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

Yelich has not been the same since his knee injury. Don’t know if it is a coincidence or not. Just has not looked comfortable at the plate at all.

I do think it's going to take guys some time to settle in given just how weird everything has been. Giving it April at least, but it is not at all fun to watch right now.

Hey I'd settle for a .259 average from Hiura at this point. I actually started becoming concerned with Hiura as I thought his Ks at AAA were a little concerning. Plus his averages were really lifted by some very high babip rates.

Great foresight by the Brewers to acquire Urias knowing Arcia's career here will likely end soon. Urias should be able to seamlessly replicate his mediocre bat and overrated glove to the point where we'll notice no difference.

So last 2 innings top 6 in order all watched strike one go by them. Think now I'm to look back on game feed and see just how many batters took the first strike.

1st-2/3 with Hiura swing and miss

2nd-2/3 Garcia swung and hit in to out

3rd-2/3 granted Arcia took on 3-0 and pitcher Anderson.

4th-1/3 Hiura swing and miss again.

5th-0/3

6th-3/5 Wong takes his 3rd straight 1st Strike. Hiura swings and misses on 3rd straight 1st strike.

7-4/5 JBJ though on 3-0. Narvaez HR on his 1st strike thrown.

8- 3/3 Wong #4 in a row. Hiura finally didn't swing but did on strike 3.

9-3/3

Total-20/31 1st strikes looking. Looking at strikes has been something I thought was problem last year? Or was that 2019? Just suggesting a correlation maybe to Haines hitting approach that is not doing well.

The failure to score with the bases loaded and one out in the 6th inning tonight ended up being the likely difference, but woof were there some awful at bats. The Brewers hitters seem to be so poor at pitch recognition. They’re just guessing, and unfortunately guessing wrong much more often than not.
Not just “at Night” anymore.

4 games. Outscored 20-11. Yet to score first.

Not the start you wanted. Lucky to get the one win.

I still think this team is going to be fine long-term, but the schedule is really tough in April and May, I think. Would hate to lose tomorrow and then be looking at Hendricks.

Didn't have much optimism coming into the year but then I saw the projections and let some hope in. Big mistake. Worried that Hiura and Yelich are toast. And with their track record it just baffles me. Utterly baffles me.

I think this time will be "fine" long-term in the sense that they should win 85 games or so, but I think the 90-95 win predictions were overly bullish and relied on too many things going right. I think the odds that they win 75 and the odds that they win 93 are about the same.

What exactly is Hiura's track record? Hit low minor league pitching as a college draftee, get bumped up to AAA and have your strikeout rate soar above 26%, get to the majors and strike out 30% of the time but have it masked by a .400 BABIP and then keep the 30% strikeout rate but inevitably have the BABIP drop to a more reasonable level cratering your offense. The rookie year was the fluke, this is who he is, pitchers have adjusted and he's going to need to adjust to their adjustment to be something more than a replacement level bat.

How do you adjust when its clearly Hiura at fault. Swings and misses. Like Olt its time to have his vision seriously looked at.Hiura's motion imo hasn't looked bad swinging. He's just not making contact with his timing and or swinging but not where pitch goes through zone.

Come to think of it, think is Keon Broxton level with the misses.

Here is something that is unfortunate. Baseball has not been fun to watch this year. It has almost seemed like a punishment - having to sit through the game. So many exciting players and reasons to watch baseball in general, but there is absolutely nothing exciting about this offense. All they do is strikeout and roll over. Im generally a "wait until Memorial Day" type of guy. but following up on what we saw last year...this is very discouraging.

Look, I'm a Cub's fan who goes to 4 or 5 Cubs/Brewers games in Milwaukee every year.

To answer your question, Yes Rizzo got booed at Miller Park every game I went to there for the last 5 or 6 years. For the last four years, Baez has been booed pretty regularly as well. It's certainly not most fans at the game, but you are kidding yourself if you think that it's only Cubs fans who are irrational.

LOL, I've been to Brewer/Cub games and no he does not. No one at Miller gives a rip about Rizzo. Maybe Baez. I'm not saying there aren't literally a few people out of 40K booing but to suggest he gets the treatment Yelich got tonight is patently false.

I guess I'm just lucky to sit amid that "few" fans. My guess is that you have a bit of selective hearing. Unless I specifically listen for it, I don't hear the embarrassing drunks at Wrigley Field.

I suggest you actually listen for it and you'll be surprised. But you are right in that Baez has gotten much more profound booing than Rizzo in 2018 and 2019.

And not to put too fine a point on it, I've been to at least a dozen Cub/Brewers games at Wrigley Field in the last several years and I've never heard Yelich booed at all!

Braun yes certainly, but he got booed everywhere. Strangely, Grandal got booed a lot too and I never understood that either.

Keston needs to be sent down ASAP and see if he can figure things out again.

That will also get him away from Haines, who is a bum.

It always feels like Brewers coaches get a long leash, a really long leash.

Haines needs to go, the sooner the better.

No need to prolong the inevitable.
