ray black has cleared outright waivers and will be assigned to the alternate training site in wisconsin.

if added back to the 40-man roster, he will remain out of options.

I'm pretty certain anyone that is able to hit triple digits has huge upside. That doesn't mean he doesn't have risk nor that he can fulfill his upside. Speed isn't everything but it helps. I'm pretty sure everyone saw him as a high risk/high reward pitcher.

The Giants released Black a few years ago so does that mean Black had to agree to go to the alternate training site or did he not have a chose [sic] in the matter?

ray black was released in 2017 by san francisco after they designated him for assignment. looking at his transaction profile, they never placed him on outright waivers. this is the first time that black has been placed on outright waivers, so he was forced to accept the minor league assignment after clearing waivers.

So much for Black having "huge upside", which he never had but didn't stop some from thinking that he did.

The number of humans who can regularly throw a baseball 100 mph and control where it goes is certainly not huge. That's why a guy like Black will continue getting chances despite never breaking through. The only reason he is still a professional baseball player is the huge amount of upside contained in that heater.

A BB/9 of over 6 as a professional would suggest that Ray Black is not among those humans.

In fairness, the upside still exists whether he can control it or not. Not many can throw that hard. He's potentially the right mechanical adjustment away from being a power bullpen arm as long as he's able to maintain the velocity.

Upside doesn't always pan out, and it definitely isn't enough to make trwi happy.

I think generally the upside a player has definitely goes away at nearly 31 years of age. If they haven't found a mechanical adjustment to throw strikes in 10 years of pro ball, it seems extremely unlikely that it will be found and the same argument would be made when the trade happened. Almost 30 with 8 years of pro ball. If the adjustment was there and correctable, it wouldn't likely take 8 years to find it.

Sure, Black has walked almost six guys per nine in the minors, but he also has a 16.7 K9 & a 0.6 HR9, so he has excelled in the other two areas where pitchers exert the most direct control.

His yearly minor league walk rates & MLB totals seem to indicate he has made pretty signifigant progress since 2015-17...

2014: 35 IP | 4.1 BB9

2015: 25 IP | 9.0 BB9

2016: 31 IP | 9.2 BB9

2017: 2 IP | 11.6 BB9

2018: 35 IP | 3.0 BB9

2019: 28 IP | 4.7 BB9

MLB: 42 IP | 4.7 BB9

And the strikeouts have gone down and the homers have gone way the hell up. It turns out having slightly better ability to find the plate doesn't mean much when the location of the pitches in the strike zone lead to being hit. Hard.

Black is a serviceable bullpen piece at this point.

That said, the Brewers, with Williams/Hader/Suter/Rasmussen as Nasty Boys 2021, followed by Feyereisen, Yardley, Wahl, and Lindblom with lots of prospects in the minors like Andrews, Perdomo, Barker, and Torres-Costa, plus Topa on the DL, plus whatever nuggets could emerge, Black is kind of crowded out.
