I guess to me there's no real difference between "bad blocker but tries" and "no interest in blocking". Neither is adding any value there with blocking.

I'd be perfectly happy with Engram. If he can stay healthy, he'd be a fantastic addition for Rodgers. I don't see how he's a bad fit when the guy he'd be replacing couldn't block worth a lick either. If he's added he's being added to work the middle of the field and the red zone catching passes for Aaron Rodgers.

Bad timing for 0-17 because there's no franchise-changing QBs in this year's draft.

I would just trade the pick and try to get multiple first round picks either in the current draft or the next. Really that is what the Lions should be doing they are not 1 player away from competing nor are they 2 or 3 away. They almost need a whole roster flip besides a few players here and there on offense and defense. Be bad for two more seasons and build a core is what the Lions really need to be doing. Start with the offensive and defensive line and move from there.

What is the main reason a team such as the Lions doesn't trade away a bunch of players at the deadline for draft picks? Happens in MLB, less so in NBA because they are often matching salaries, but you get the point. Is there some rule I am unaware of? Lions could have 12-15 draft picks, take the cap hits from the traded players, at least sell some hope, and then in the second year of those rookie contracts, go big on some FA and turn over the roster. What am I missing?

I believe there is a rule limiting how many draft picks you can have in a given draft. But overall I agree with the thought. NFL teams don't really do much to "rebuild" compared to MLB. They basically spin their wheels until they luck into a franchise QB.

Yeah the QB is everything plus you don't have time to develop all these draft picks like you do with prospects in baseball so selling off doesn't really always pay off. Every team already has a bunch of first and second year players they are developing so making room for a boatload of picks isn't that easy. Better off trying to show some improvement down the stretch to build toward next year than picking up a bunch of mid to late rounds picks.

Saints WR Michael Thomas will not be returning this year.

I don't think there is. The Vikings drafted 15 players in the 2020 draft.

Yeah the bad ones do that, that's why they're picking at the top of the draft and they keep taking new franchise QB's year after year who end up being "busts" after a few years because they get sacked a lot and lose a bunch of games.

Don't know where this should be put. Just a story on Jonathan Taylor who's getting cred. Happy to see former Badgers see success at the professional level.

You just knew he was a steal in that draft.

Colts got Pittman and Taylor in that draft. Heckuva haul.

He's already in the top 10 running backs in the league and possibly in the top five.

I believe now that the deadline is passed, the new rule is that he's technically on waivers rather than released. Seems somewhat low-risk for a team with a higher priority than the Packers to claim him before we have the chance....

Yeah you're right....although OBJ probably can still heavily influence where he goes by telling teams where he simply won't play the rest of this season.

My guess is he winds up a Raider or Saint

Looking like OBJ is going to get released by the Browns...

Since this year's team is already a soap opera, why not pick him up? Reminds me a bit of the scenario with the 1996 Packers signing Rison around this point of the season, although part of that was alot of receiver injuries.

When the Packers signed Rison, both Brooks and Freeman had gone down, and their defacto #1 WR was Don Beebe. It was at the point where KR/PR Desmond Howard and TE Keith Jackson were seeing substantial snaps at WR.

I don't think there is any chance that the Packers even consider OBJ. I'd be floored if they do.

I doubt he's going to want to go to the Saints with their trainwreck situation at QB. Raiders are a solid thought. Chiefs wouldn't surprise me either. That team has been perpetually looking for a guy opposite Hill.

I hope they’d at least place a call to OBJ’s agent to see if he’d be willing to sign for some nominal amount for the next 9 weeks, but adding him would be unlikely, in my opinion:

1) He’s probably looking for big guaranteed money in what could be his last large contract.

2) If he wants to chase a ring, might he consider the Packers toxic with the Aaron Rodgers / COVID situation? Wouldn’t an AFC team like Buffalo make more sense since their path to the Super Bowl is considerably easier vs. the top heavy NFC?

OBJ would be going contract hunting this offseason - would be tough finding both a contender for this season that also has lots of cap space to give him a big contract. Because of that, if he plays the rest of this year it will be on a team with a legit shot at a ring.

If I'm a GM I have a very hard time giving OBJ a huge deal for a cool catch he made like 10 years ago, too. Bringing a motivated version of him in for league minimum while the Browns pay out the rest of his current contract as a signing bonus to let him walk is a no risk-high reward move, IMO. Doubtful the Packers get a chance to make that move due to their waiver position, but you never know...

OBJ wants targets. He's more likely to get them on the Raiders than the Packers.

I thought on the rule that with the waivers and claim from worst to first, the acquiring team picked up the remainder of the contract owed. I guess a quick look and that team picks up 7.25mil for remainder of season. (I guess the Browns made a deal to make Odell a FA after this season)

Can GB fit that in to their salary cap hit? Would have to imagine either way that a team gives him a look before GB has the chance to claim him. We are 28th in order with teams like Tampa, Buffalo, and Dallas ahead of us. Add Pittsburgh and Cincinnati to add salt to the wound on Cleveland.

How many teams actually have $7.25m in cap space right now?

10

suppose a team could also waive some money with hopes another team picks them up. I'd actually wonder if a GM was on the phone with another team to waive a 1-4mil player for that team to pick up so they have enough cap space.

Cleveland alone would be a good example. They are right in the middle of standings. You need 3mil to be able to claim Beckam. You give them somebody they could use. Say even if its GB. and Kevin King. Maybe that scenario will unfold here if a team really wants Odell.
