Garrett Mitchell’s Swing

Eye Black
I wouldn't mess with the swing this year. We're starting behind schedule after no games last year, changing his swing vs competition he should whoop and seeing poor results during could hinder his game mentally. Just let him advance with the approach today til he seems to stall(if at all) Comparing Taylor ignores one being a college aged player and the other an 18yr old who clearly needed a change.

Watching the YT video at UCLA, yes swing looks shorter contact type vs letting be a little longer and more destructive. He's a CF at this time not a corner OF. Bring the defense, OPS in upper 700s to low 800s, he's a keeper for a long time. He's bringing high EV to the table already. What youre essentially upset with is not enough HRs in today's 3TO batting. He can tinker as his career advances, raise the launch angle and take off ala Yelich. He is still in the minds as a top 100 prospect, talent we need to advance up the minors quickly.

If he's the next Lorenzo Cain, I am fine with that.

You dont need big power to be a star in CF if you are fast, play solid defense, and post a nice OBP/OPS. From what we are seeing Mitchell is very close to ready to do that at the big league level.

If he flames out with his current approach, then sure, make a change. But dont fix an approach that currently works.

The speed comment was strange to me.......from what I have seen the guy can fly....it’s not just a great motor.

Baseball America has him listed as an 80 grade runner. MLB.com has him graded at 70 speed/run. Baseball Prospectus said he has plus-plus speed. Whichever unnamed evaluator claimed "average speed" for that article seems to at least be the outlier. He certainly looks a lot faster than average to me.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Not sure I agree with all of this but obviously a very positive article.

Im not sure if the comment on average speed wasn't referring to the Nick Markakis comp at NCAA? Though it is off-puting to say Mitchell as a Corner OF. At the same time how gutsy for the Brewers guy to say he believes there isn't a better position player prospect than Mitchell.

Yeah, I read that speed comment in the article as being related to Markakis, not Mitchell.

I think the Brewers have something special in Mitchell - regardless what his swing path currently looks like. When the biggest knock on him is he doesn't hit 450' HRs in games the same way he does in BP because he hits too many line drives and hard hit ground balls, IMO that's much better than wondering if a prospect who displays excellent in-game power can find a way to stop striking out 40% of his ABs so he could project into an 800 OPS player at the major league level.

Mitchell starting today against Buehler.

Where are we thinking Mitchell will begin his minor league career? Do you place him in A+ for a month or two and if he rakes, bump him up to AA right away? There’s no rush in getting him to the big leagues, but he has been extremely impressive in Spring Training. He is 22 already and will be 23 by season’s end. I expect him to move through the minors very quickly.

I'm real excited about the prospect of having Mitchell and Turang atop our lineup in the near future. Both guys have elite speed, get on base, play premium positions and hopefully will set the table for Yelich, Hiura. I think Turang's a future leadoff hitter and Mitchell sounds at the moment like an ideal #2. If he adds a bit more power, then perhaps he becomes more of a middle of the order bat.

But with those two, and then some of the young arms and catchers we've got, I think this system is underrated. We may not have a lot of surplus talent that would allow us to make the types of trades the Pads or Astros were able to, but still...I think we look back on this group in 4-5 years and all agree it's an underrated group.

A starting SS and CF'er who should hit, get on and steal bases while playing very good defense, a couple of lefty starters and a few good pen arms...and that's not counting on the development of guys like Perez who have huge upsides.

Most of these prospect gurus have had minimal looks at players in the last year plus and are mostly looking at 2019 analysis for their information. These young players haven't been sitting on the couch because there was no minor league season last year, they were all advancing/improving at different rates. I'll go as far as it's likely to say the system/player rankings could be drastically different in July when the deadline comes up, assuming minor league games start in May sometime.

That's why I'm almost more excited for Minor League Baseball to start than I was for opening day.

It'll be interesting to see what seeing more advanced pitching did for Turang for instance. Could this maybe even speed up his development? Can Small maintain his reported increased velocity...if so, how high can he rise? He was dominant in spite of a big fastball, but due to his location and delivery. If he can keep all that but sit at 94, he could be nasty. It's not unrealistic to hope to see Ashby and Small making starts this year. That means...it's conceivable the Brewers could have a rotation of Woody, Burnes, Peralta, Small and Ashby. How long have we been praying the likes of Mike Jones or Mark Rogers or whoever could actually make it through the system and contribute. Now we could have 5 homegrown starters.

But...first they've actually gotta starter playing some games.
