Lorenzo Cain injury thread

Man I wish that JBJ starts to hit

Mentioned before but JBJ has now had 5 seasons out of his 9 where he was holding below a 200BA at this calendar date. He has often pulled it up to .220 by mid July and finished a little higher 2 of the previous 4.

So he should trend towards 200 over the next 4 weeks. But not likely to find 220 by season end.

So we can look forward to him hitting .200?

Well, at least we have that going for us.

Lorenzo's already at 31 games & essentially half a win (0.6 fWAR/0.4 bWAR). Even if he comes back after the All Star Break there will still be 70 games on the schedule as of now. I think that should be enough time for him to crack 81 games & maybe even approach 1.5 WAR.

101 total games played (which doesn't account for his off days, so you can probably knock of at least 5 - 10 of those, making his number about 95 games played), assuming he doesn't hit the IL a couple more times...

There is just no way possible that Cain will have played 95 games when this season ends.

Cain wasn't even having a bad season before he got injured I don't see what everyone is complaining about. Speculation about his offseason routine is silly. None of you know how he prepares or what it takes to stay in shape for a baseball season. Personally I'm excited to get him back and I think he'll be a real shot in the arm for the team.

It's possible, but only until he goes down with another injury... It's inevitable at this point.

This is McCalvy's article prior to Spring Training:

"And his legs?

Cain grinned.

“The legs are coming,” he said. “They’re not where I want them to be, but they will get there before it’s time to play.”

From a physical standpoint, Cain concedes he is in nowhere near as good a place as this time last year. His running consisted mostly of chasing his three boys, who have celebrated birthdays Nos. 3, 5 and 6 since the end of a Brewers season which Cain followed via television and FaceTime with teammates. Due to pandemic restrictions, the baseball facilities at OU were closed to outsiders -- even Major Leaguers in possession of a World Series ring -- so Cain didn’t see much in the way of live pitching before Wednesday, when he planned to stand in the batter’s box and track pitches during live batting practice.

This was before he got injured early in Spring Training, and again and again after that. He went into 2020 in great shape, then Covid happened, and he decided to stop working out. Kind of sounds like he's cashed out and is ready to retire and spend more time with the kids. Unfortunately, the Brewers are paying him a lot of money whether he works out or not, so he'll still be on the 40-man until the contract is over. I think this is the biggest reason the Brewers felt it was necessary to sign JBJ, but that obviously hasn't worked out well.

Up until this offseason, I had always liked the way Cain played and the leadership he brought. From the time of the trade, I wished we hadn't sent him (and others) to KC for Greinke, and I was excited to see him play as a Brewer when he re-signed. But now it just looks to me like he's now a guy who's ready to call it quits but needs to keep going to work for a while before he can retire. I don't expect much from Cain, and at this point I'd like to see what Taylor can bring as an every day CF.

Thought I asked this the other day but I can’t find it. Any word on why Cain hasn’t played in almost a week?

He played on Sunday (11th). Team off day Monday, and is in the lineup tonight. So he missed two games. Why? I don't know. I wouldn't call it almost a week though.

Who goes down when Cain comes off the DL? Taylor does not deserve to go down but he seems to be the obvious choice. Do they send down a pitcher? Maybe Tellez goes down and they use Yelich at 1b occasionally?

More than likely will be Hiura who goes down when Cain comes back.

Yelich at 1B? Ever seen him play there before?

it's something to consider one day. Wasn't he drafted as a 1b? I have no stats to back this up, but he looks very limited out there. Was at the game today and his lazy route and grab allowed the Royal to tag up and take 2nd. He's not really throwing well or running things down. But a defense with Taylor and Cain would be really good.

I hope so. Hiura needs more at bats.

Even though Jace and Rowdy are both lefty sticks - Hiura doesn't hit lefties anyways, so be pretty disgusted if he isn't the one sent down.

I don't understand the platoon they're currently using, since both Tellez and Hiura have reverse splits, but they're using them in a traditional platoon. Might as well just let Tellez play everyday and see what he can do.

Some @Brewers injury stuff:

- If the weekend goes well, Lo Cain returns next week in Pittsburgh

- Boxberger (shoulder) is “good to go,” CC said.

- Williams (elbow) throws a ‘pen tomorrow. Trending well.

- Shaw (shoulder), Vogelbach (hamstring) begin rehab assignments next week.

It certainly is looking like Hiura will be the one going down when Cain returns tomorrow He's had 1 AB in the past week with Tellez getting most starts now. It's going to be a bit odd with 5 IF and 5 OF, but you have to go with the bats. And it sounds like Peterson is going to be playing all over now, giving guys a day off.

It also sounds like Williams will be back tomorrow, too.

Pretty much full strength tomorrow.

Probably Hiura going down, but with the move back to a 5-man rotation they effectively gain a reliever, making it easier to go with a 13-man pitching staff again so it's also possible they send down a reliever.

I think another player other than Hiura needs to go down and figure out why he can't hit anymore - Yelich. He is almost an automatic out right now. :(

He's in a bad slump, and he definitely hasn't played up to his contract the past year, but he certainly hasn't been the worst hitter on the roster either.

2021 Season:

So, if you want to use a very small sample size, yes he's been awful the past couple weeks, but Garcia, Peterson, Narvaez, Pina, and Hiura have all been worse during that time period. If you extend it to the past month, he's 2nd worst on the team, but that has more to do with how hot the rest of the team has been and he has a much more respectable 90 wRC+ during that time period, which you can withstand for a month while you hope he returns to form. If you extend it to the full season, he's actually the least automatic out, as even with the recent slump he still has the highest OBP on the team for the year.

It's frustrating to watch because you know what he can be, but despite his struggles, I think he hasn't been *as bad* as people have been making him out to be and you need to stick with him through it.

On the positive side, JBJ has quietly become an average offensive player recently. Which, if he can keep it up along with his defense, makes him a very valuable player moving forward. And it's getting very hard to keep Taylor out of the lineup as well. Mixing and matching and playing the hot hands with Yelich, Cain, Garcia, JBJ, and Taylor could be very solid the rest of the year.
