A’s-Rangers Khris Davis for Elvis Andrus Trade

Eye Black

Per Rosenthal:

The Athletics are acquiring SS Elvis Andrus from the Rangers for DH/OF Khris Davis, sources tell The Athletic.

————————————

It’s hard to believe Elvis Andrus is only 32-years old, seems like he’s been around forever. Khrush just turned 33.

This would’ve been a heck of a trade 4-years ago.

Can you still call Khris Davis an OF when he's played 110 innings there the last three seasons combined? OK I'll allow it.

Some more info on the trade from Jeff Passan...

The Oakland A’s are acquiring SS Elvis Andrus and another player and will be sending DH Khris Davis and a pair of prospects to the Texas Rangers, sources tell ESPN.

Elvis Andrus is under contract with Oakland through 2022 and will be owed $28.5 million. Khris Davis is making $13.75 million and is a free agent after the 2021 season. A’s get a shortstop to replace Semien. Rangers shed money. @Ken_Rosenthal was first on the main exchange.

And Rosenthal...

Rangers also getting catcher Jonah Heim and right-hander Dane Acker along with Khris Davis from the Athletics for shortstop Elvis Andrus, one other player and cash, sources tell The Athletic.

Source confirms: Other player going to Athletics from Rangers is catching prospect Aramís Garcia. Deal will free up cash for A’s to upgrade their bullpen.

Full trade, per sources: SS Elvis Andrus, C Aramís García and cash to Athletics. DH Khris Davis, C Jonah Heim and RHP Dane Acker to Rangers.

Great deal for Texas IMO as they dump two years of Andrus salary and only have to take back one year of Davis salary.

Scratch that, this looks pretty even after seeing the Rangers are going to send the A's 13.5 million as part of the deal.

Is Khris Davis really Keston Huira but 10 years in the future?

No. Davis strikes out way less than Hiura

Peak Khris (2015-18) had a 133 K%+, Hiura is at a 144 K%+ for his career, but he's also done so during his age 22/23 seasons. Davis was still in A/A+/AA at the same age & didn't play his first full season until age 26, so it's not quite a one to one comparison.

Peak Khris also walked more than Keston has (113 vs 77 BB%+), though Hiura has made up for it by posting a higher BABIP+ (118 vs 92) leading to better AVG+ (105 to 97) & OBP+ (103 to 100) marks.

Where peak Khris really had the edge was in raw power with a 170 ISO+ vs only 131 for Keston, which accounts for his overall edge in wRC+ at 128 to 118.

All told peak Khris posted 79.5 batting runs over those four seasons, 25th best in MLB. I'd like to think Keston can top that given his edge in terms of age & pedigree, but if he ends up around there over the next four years I'd take that outcome.

Of course, there's always the possibility Keston can't reign in the Ks & he falls short of that level of production by anywhere from slightly to considerably.

Hopefully Keston can get 600+ plate appearances in 2021 to state his case.
