BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects - 2021 Pre-Season Edition - Voting closed.

reillymcshane
Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Greeting, we would like to invite everyone to take part in the 2020 Pre-Season BF.net Fan Community Top 25 Prospects voting.

Voting is now open. You need to submit on this thread your top 25 Brewer prospects. Feel free to list any resources or news that you feel might help people with their voting.

Voting concludes on March 19. You can change your votes at anytime through that date.

RULES

1. Submit your Top 25 prospects, in order, by end of day on March 19, 2021. Put the player's full name to avoid any confusion. I appreciate it you would number them. Also, please list your players from #1 to #25.

2. You MUST submit 25 prospects. If there are only 10 or 15 or whatever, your list will not be included.

3. You are encouraged to go beyond pick #25. This way if a player you vote for is released or traded, or you list someone twice, or whatever, we can just bump up your next player.

4. Rankings are determined by total points. The top prospect gets 25 points, second prospect gets 24 points, etc.

4. As noted above, if you submit your list and want to change something, just add the change to the thread via the edit function. I'll accept changes up to the deadline.

5. Within a week or so after the deadline, we'll publish the new BF.net Community Top 25.

Eligibility guidelines

Rookie eligibility is determined by the same standards as MLB:

“A player shall be considered a rookie unless, during a previous season or seasons, he has (a) exceeded 130 at-bats or 50 innings pitched in the Major Leagues; or (b) accumulated more than 45 days on the active roster of a Major League club or clubs during the period of 25-player limit (excluding time in the military service and time on the disabled list).”

- Players graduated from Top 25 list: Drew Rasmussen (3), Devin Williams (16), Jacob Nottingham (20)

- Other players who have exceeded rookie limits: Eric Yardley

- Eligible players with ML experience: JP Feyereisen, Bobby Wahl, Tyrone Taylor, Angel Perdomo, Justin Topa, Phil Bickford, Mark Mathias

If there are any questions, you can check out Baseball-Reference.com and each players has a 'rookie status' row. It will tell you if a person is or isn't a rookie.

Players no longer in organization

- Michael Mediavilla - released

- Carlos Luna - released

- Joangtel Segovia - released

- Aaron Wilkerson - Free agent

- Anthony Bender - released

- Francisco Gonzalez - released

- Aaron Familia - released

We will add any other names here if someone is dealt or released or there is an error.

New players in organization to consider

Here are last year's draft picks you may want to consider.

1 (20). Garrett Mitchell, OF, UCLA

2 (53). Freddy Zamora, SS, Miami

3 (92). Zavier Warren, C/IF, Central Michigan

4 (121). Joey Wiemer, OF, Cincinnati

5 (151). Hayden Cantrelle, SS, Louisiana-Lafayette

I'm not sure about international signings - so please leave a note in the comments if you think someone is worth adding here.

Prospect Rankings

Please look at the BF.net prospect ranking thread - all sorts of great stuff - and people are always adding links to new lists and reviews.

Hey folks, please vote for our 2021 pre-season poll.

We have had three players graduate (D. Williams, Nottingham, Rasmussen), so there will definitely be some new blood.

Note the recent draft picks, and if I'm missing anyone important, please put a note in this thread and I will add to the intro.

Interesting note: Tyrone Taylor was #2 on our very first poll back in 2014. Seven years later, he is still eligible for voting. No one else from Top 40 or so players is eligible anymore.

The players still with Milwaukee from that initial list: Orlando Arcia, Devin Williams and Brent Suter.

One final note: please refrain from mocking or slamming other people's listings. That's the not the point of this. If you want to - politely - ask a person about why they voted how they did - that's fine. But please be respectful of this process and everyone taking part. Thanks.

Honestly, we have so many international guys that I have no clue on that this could have been a top 15 list.

Out of curiosity since he isn't on either list, is Mathias eligible?

BRef list Mathias as maintaing rookie status for 2021, so I believe he should still be eligible.

You are correct. Thanks for catching him. I will update him on the intro post.

Also, going to baseball-reference.com and checking the 'rookie status' row is how I'm going by things. So check there if anyone else is missing.

Thank you for kicking off the poll, brooks_quichenick. Appreciate it.

Thanks for continuing to set this up for us!

7 years ago I made the offer to run things. No one else ever wants to do it - so now it's just sort of my thing. It's fun, but can be a bit time consuming in crunch time. But that's life.

Thank you, Reilly. I might update mine as I think further. I will say this was one of the toughest ones to ever do because of the lack of a minor league season. You have to read kind of between the lines. The silence on some guys was deafening. For example, I’ve heard almost nothing about Corey Ray. So I dinged him quite a bit. But he was an extra base machine in 2018 and then was hurt in 2019. He will probably never have a good hit tool but maybe can get some extra base hits. I have just a final tinge of hope with him that he can be a MLB player soon.

For a system that gets dogged quite a bit, I’m pretty optimistic on our top 20 or so players. We will see if my theory ages well. We have some guys who I think will add juice to the MLB club in the next 3-4 years. I’d say this list could very well prove to be better than some prior year lists that were touted such as the years we had Brinson at the top.

I'm loving all the voting so far.

Please throw out your support for specific players if you want to promote them. This is especially true for the young international players - who many of us (including myself) know little about. This is especially true since we don't have data from last year.

Thanks!

Here are some recent nuggets for guys under consideration mostly outside the current top ten...

Thanks, Eye Black. This was awesome to have.

Since I'm the only one to mention him so far, my reasoning on Israel Puello:

Moderately high dollar signing ($400K-$500K if I remember correctly) with fairly prototypical size and was above 90 as an 18-year-old. I believe only two starting pitchers currently in the Brewers minor league system logged at least 50 IP in 2019 with 10+ K/9 and less than 3 BB/9: Puello and Max Lazar. Had the best K-BB% of qualifying pitchers in the DSL.

Reading Eye Black's list reminded me of one of the things I'm looking forward to this coming season: seeing who from among the next tier of pitching prospects after those who were at the alternate site break through. You've got the Phelps trade trio, Vassalotti, Ramirez, Bennett, Jarvis, Olson, Castaneda, Crawford, Zavalos, etc. Given the sheer number and that the Brewers have seemed to improve at developing pitching in recent years, I have to think a few of them make at least a File/Bettinger type of leap.

Although often overlooked and not highly regarded by the publications...us Georgia fans always pull for our boy Gabe Holt...2019 7th rounder who hit for a combined average of 315 while at the 60 man and instructionals....after only 2 ABs in March before the 2020 shutdown. Always walks softly and quietly until its time to play...

Thank you, Eye Black. Great Info. I rated Quero and Hamilton high. Long way to go, but they profile really well so I gave them good rankings. With Hamilton, from what I’ve read over time is he had a big injury his last year at Texas but might have otherwise been in the conversation for the first round. That’s classic David Stearns taking advantage of a market inefficiency in the eighth round. I think we were all excited in our post draft talk here too.

Maybe I’m a baseball nerd, but with the absence of minor league ball last season, I am especially excited to see how all of our prospects play this year. Info has been so sparse. I hope guys aren’t shaking too much rust off. The first part of the season could be rough.

Our group of Latin players is the largest, most compelling group we’ve ever had IMO. It will still be awhile but playing the odds, hopefully more than our share of guys will emerge. Who knows, maybe in a few years we are looking at Perez in right, Quero at catcher, Parra at third, and a couple of those live arms all in Milwaukee. Our drafting is more inspired and our Latin signings look promising.

We had a dry period in our system for years. Some of it was uninspired drafting. But we didn’t get enough Latin talent. Peralta and Arcia come to mind, but you’d look at good systems at the time and they’d have more juice on their prospect lists from Latin America. We are on our trajectory to that point.

Sorry this is long. But how about the pitching lab and development! We have so many guys with strong upticks in velocity. I was surprised by File in this regard last spring but it’s happening with such stunning frequency that you have to give credit to the organization’s program with pitching.

People want to knock the occasional weird signing but the infrastructure and analysis within the organization has gone sky high under Stearns. For the skeptics, I grant you that guys haven’t proven it. But when we look back in five years, I think our current top 25 will prove to be very good. And keep in mind, I was a big critic of our drafting and development in the past. So this isn’t just me being a homer.
