And now the cards are in second and the reds are in last. The Brewers have been by far the most consistent team

It’s amazing how quickly the Reds went from scoring a ton of runs and being discussed as the darlings of the early season to last place in the NL Central. They’re on a 7-game losing streak and head out west to play the Dodgers starting tomorrow.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

I kind of think that’s the way the Reds will be this year. Without the pitching, when the offense cools off they will go on some big losing streaks. They’ll get hot again I’m sure and they will score a lot of runs so I don’t see them as an easy team to beat. Just going to be streaky.

Reds fans are currently in complete meltdown mode over their pitching imploding for a third consecutive game. Just caught a glimpse of Derek Johnson making a mound visit during the 7th inning, and it reminded me that his exit didn’t exactly prove to be the death knell many expected. Don’t get me wrong, I like DJ and think he did a great job, but it’s nice to see the organization’s pitching development probably supersedes the impact of any one individual.

Agreed. Johnson was great, I think the Brewers staff overperformed with him when they had guys like Chacin, Miley, even Anderson was pretty solid.

But it's a lot of fun to see them actually developing some power arms and graduating guys from the Minors. We've always had tantalizing prospects, but whatever they're doing now, it seems to be working.

If they can manage to get that next wave of arms to the big leagues and they can contribute...even this year, then I'd start feeling even more confident that we could continue to compete over a long period of time like Cleveland or Tampa. And there's no reason to think Small, Ashby, etc...won't be able to thrive for the Brewers.

JBJ (86 PAs, 58 wRC+), Avisail (85 PAs, 68 wRC+), Keston (79 PAs, 57 wRC+) & Robertson (43 PAs, -2 wRC+) have taken 35.6% of the team's 823 position player plate appearances so far (almost like playing with only two outs every inning) yet the Brewers are still 14-9 & solid favorites to win the NLC by all of PECOTA (70%), FanGraphs (58.2%) & 538 (47%).

The Brewers combined team hitting stats are mostly in the bottom third of the league across several important offensive categories. Despite that their cumulative FanGraphs WAR among all position players is the 10th best in MLB (currently at 3.1 fWAR). I assume some of that can be attributed to defensive contributions, but it was a bit surprising (in a positive way). The Brewers don’t need an elite offense to be good, even if they can improve to an “average offense” statistically that will be a big boost.

I'm assuming all that war "difference" is defense and baserunning. Both of which this team seems to be either elite (defense) at or very good (baserunning) at.

I love the makeup of the team. Need to get the key guys back and a couple others to career norms and then look out.

Reds, Pirates and Cubs have all lost……Cards losing in the 8th.

NLC was the first division where all team won 10 games, and the first where all teams lost 10 games. Winning and losing together!

But of course, in the end the Brewers will win slightly more.

I peeked at the Brewers June Schedule. Theoretically There should will be a lot of only wins in there.

Fixed.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Optimism thread. Actually tied for 13th per that chart. I suspect his defense will improve as the season goes on also.

Yeah defensive metrics mean very little at this point. They actually quite liked him before the "yips-game" with the airmailed throws.

Urias is a good hitter; has a good eye, makes good swing/take decisions. Sometimes the ump (Or the abilty of the catcher/pitcher to steal strikes on the edges) will screw him, sometimes not. His BABIP will increase, and so will his numbers.

His defense isn't as flashy as Arcia (few are), but he looks nimble and sure-handed out there, and not prone to the defensive mental mistakes Arcia was ... other than his yips game, of course. I suspect that come September, Luis Urias is going to have quite the positive fan following. Easy to forget that he's still only at an age (23) when most MLB players are playing AA or AAA ball.
