The earliest this would come into play looks like would be the 2023 season maybe the 2022 season? I think 12 is fine but would prefer 8 teams. I think the March Madness comparison is spot on. I believe about 90% of the time the top 4 teams are going to win which is probably right around the same for the top 4 in basketball. There is probably more variance in basketball than there is in football but the underdogs having about a 10% chance of winning I can live with that.

Another topic that is probably big for college sports in general is the recent supreme court ruling which is going to challenge the NCAA's authority on if student athletes can be paid or not or how much they can earn. Kavanaugh's thoughts on this will be used to challenge the NCAA's authority and I believe the NCAA is going to lose and I believe this is the right course of action.

Sounds like it may take till 2026 or something like that. The current contract runs another ~4 years. They would have to get all the bowl games on board with it etc etc etc. The interview I saw the guy didn't say it would be impossible to get it sooner, but he said no one should really bank on it before then.

You don't even need the lesser teams to win, even ever. An occasional upset would bring enough excitement to those lesser schools and fans in general. While it wouldn't be some mid major Loyola or FGCU, I still think fans would get giddy when Oklahoma/LSU/etc. lose to Nebraska or whoever it may be.

I saw that the 5-8 seeds would actually get to host the first round at their stadium. Even if those teams get blown out in the second round consistently that would be huge. Can you imagine if Wisconsin got to host a playoff/bowl game at Camp Randall?

Aaaaand boom goes the dynamite. UW gets their fifth commitment of the week in WR Tommy McIntosh.

McIntosh is 6'5" so it's not clear if they are projecting him at WR or at TE. He's not highly ranked but had been gaining a lot of momentum and attention this spring, and had offers from Texas, Iowa, Cincinnati, and Indiana, three of which have much more WR-friendly offenses.

UW just got a commitment from Curtis Neal, DL. Had some big time offers (Alabama, Auburn, Florida State, Georgia, LSU, Miami (FL), Ohio State, Oregon, Penn State, Texas A&M,). Had his official at Ohio St after he visited UW and still chose Bucky.

Why settle for just a buckeye when you can have the whole Bucky?

Don't forget, they are the reigning Duke's Mayo Bowl Champions and they've got the trophy to prove it. I'm sure that pushed them at least a couple if not several spots.

True[sarcasm]...but that also brought into question their fumbling problems.[/sarcasm]

I think they should go back to the old bowl system with traditional matchups.

AND THEN PLAY A PLAYOFF!! 4 top teams make the semifinals like they do now. You have to win your bowl game to make the playoffs.

Too many games. Doubtful they’d say yes to that. I’ve never liked the Bowl games because they’re pretty meaningless.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Even the last Rose Bowl loss wasn't really all that crushing, the playoffs have ruined that mystique. Going to 8 or 12 playoff teams seems like it would be best, especially for the Badgers.

I am not sure what to expect this year, last season was pretty miserable to watch but the Badgers usually surprise in years when they don't come in with much preseason hype.

I'm confused by this. You don't choose the 4 teams that make the playoffs until after the bowl games. Obviously that makes them super meaningful, and you end up playing fewer games than a 12 team playoff system. Same number of games as in 8 team playoff, except that it throws a bone to the Rose Bowl and Orange bowl etc. because those are awesome games that have obvious playoff implications.

Too many bowl games. I’ve never been a fan of it. There’s no reason for like 90% of bowl games other than to have a company slap their name on a trophy and promote it. I just hate the meaningless of college football. There is simply too much of it. The system in place sucks. 125 D1 football teams should be cut in half to start. And that may be too many still. But people continue to watch and go to games so the cycle of a lousy system will continue.

I've generally hated the fake confidence of any of the playoff BCS approaches, and appreciate the regional nature of college sports. We already have a pro league that is built to crown a champion. Giving a lot of people other things to play for and care about is way more interesting then trying to do a lesser version of the NFL.

I miss the Poulan Weed-Eater Bowl and the Bad Boy Mowers Gasparilla Bowl just isn't the same without Bad Boy Mowers.

I do like any food related bowl game so this year I'll be paying particular attention to:

Famous Idaho Potato Bowl

Cheez-It Bowl

Duke's Mayo Bowl

Outback Bowl*

*They should really call this the Bloomin' Onion Bowl as that rolls off the tongue quite nicely....like a bite of Bloomin' Onion does when I spit it out into a napkin.

What’s regional about the Big Ten these days?

Adding my $.02...

I think this is the best Badger team since 2017 and it has the potential to be better than that crew. This is potentially the best defense we've had, which, I know, says a lot. Impact players and depth on the DL (Benton and Hennigson are All-Big Ten caliber players) and at LB. Depth and experienced DBs who've now worked under JL for their entire careers.

The offense is the bigger question mark, but PC generally has good offenses when he has experienced players, and we are flush with experience everywhere except maybe running back.

Punter will be great. K is a question mark, and that is scary.

Hopefully the season is "normal" because I think we have a GREAT team to look forward to.
