Packer 2021 Team Discussion (Rodgers Out Vs. Chiefs)

CheezWizHed
How does that affect the cap? $8M savings? Does any of the $4.4M count or as "unlikely to be earned?"

edit - $7.25M from Smith. With another $750k from Amos and $120k by letting Lovett go: https://packerswire.usatoday.com/2021/03/12/packers-clear-over-8-million-in-salary-cap-space-with-three-moves/

That basically puts them right there. An extension of Z or Adams not only puts them under before the new league year, it also gives them room to do some stuff next week. Extend both, and you've got pretty decent flexibility..

Probably the last year if they don't restructure again.

In a lot of ways, this restructure worked out well for both sides- Smith doesn't hit FA this year with a depressed market and following a disappointing year, allowing for a potential rebound and more significant payday when they inevitably cut him next year. In addition to the cap space, the Packers retain a guy that played very well in year one and will probably be better next year than he was this....

Read somewhere that a Rodgers restructuring might not get announced publicly until after the free agents are signed. That way GB can claim cap issues in negotiations.

Haven’t seen details yet, but Turner was restructured this morning.

It sort of seems like they are putting a lot of work into some of these other contracts if they are planning on extending Adams or redoing Rodgers deal. Has there even been any rumors of negotiations with Adams? A quick google search doesn't turn up much. Hopefully they got a good deal with Turner to keep him around for a while, he got exposed at LT in the NFCC but has been a useful player.

Sounds like ~$2.5 million from Turner's straight restructure. Packers should be semi-officially under the cap by ~$500k-$1m with that move.

They do need more space that that, obviously. The three elephants in the room (Aaron, Davante, and Z) are likely the last dominos to fall here.

Maybe they don’t want to extend Rodgers? Or maybe he doesn’t want to? Who knows.

I really am glad they found a way to keep Smith. I really do think Pettine’s scheme made him look worse than he is for the first 8 games last year.

I was just complaining on here because I didn't think this was likely to happen, but I agree...great move for both sides.

I feel good about Gary and Z, but good defenses have a rotation. They get to keep him and they end up paying roughly what his cap hit would have been. Perfect move and a sign that Preston wants to be here.

I wonder if some of that may just be Rodgers wanting to see if the Packers actually go out and aggressively address some of those holes before deciding how they'll restructure also. I'd read that he wasn't very receptive to extending his contract...which could free up a lot more room, but they can save ~10 million without his permission.

Not sure how much this would help though. Aside from maybe extending guys already on the roster, guys like 'Tae, Jones, Tonyan, other FA's aren't going to care that they're cap strapped. But it does make some sense.

Mitchell Schwartz seems like he could be a very nice pickup to play RT. He's 32, but last year was the first time he'd missed any games and he'd been one of the best RT's in the NFL before last year.

The one player I keep seeing everyone connecting the Packers to is Will Fuller. I just don't think I can get excited about a WR'er signing for #1 type money when he's constantly hurt. I guess as long as they keep the signing bonus low, it could be an interesting addition, but not a top 3 need...OL, CB, DL are all much more pressing.

Can GB get in on Carl Lawson?

I know you can never have enough quality pass rushers, but I would doubt they would be interested in Lawson with Preston Smith's renegotiation. I think that they may sign a 4th edge rusher like Fackrell to a cheap deal, but Lawson will likely be too pricey to shore up a position that is already looking good with the Smiths and Gary coming back.

Jones signs 4 year $48 million deal to stay in Green Bay.

I want to like it. I do. But he’s a running back that could’ve been replaced. That being said he is a great dude and I enjoy having him on our team. And he seems to really love GB.

I'm happy they kept him, I'd have been ok had they let him go. I do think Williams is definitely gone now.

1/4 of the contract is a signing bonus. Should make year 1 cap hit much more reasonable. At the end of the day, Jones is an elite talent. He thrived in MLF offense. Should be a lighting/thunder combo with dillan the next few years.

I am pretty surprised, would have preferred to franchise him at 8 million and see where we are at next offseason but I am sure his cap hit this season will be less than that. The Packers don't let guys they want go after their rookie deal so I guess we should have expected this. I would also have preffered spending the money on Watt but happy to have Jones back as he is a good player.

The Packers are weird. What exactly did we spend a 2nd on Dillon for again?

Because Lafleur's scheme works best with multiple backs that offer different specialties. And this all but guarantees that Jamaal Williams will be playing elsewhere. Dillon is basically Williams' replacement as the power back.
