Packer 2021 Team Discussion (Rodgers Out Vs. Chiefs)

CheezWizHed

I feel somewhat strongly that AZ won't be the worst team in the West. I think Seattle may very well be that even with Wilson. For a guy making demands, he was pretty terrible the 2nd half of the season and that whole team is giving me 2018 Packers vibes. They're hanging on by a thread but feel inches away from being pretty bad.

I'm not a real believer in SF curing all their ills with getting healthy. It just never seems to shake out that way.

I'm not a huge believer in Kyler Murray until/unless he cures that hitch in his throwing motion.

Yeah, I'm not super high on them either. Like I said, I think that division has a good chance of being really overrated next season. And I think the East is the sleeper at least as far as exceeding expectations. Rivera seems to really have something in WAS finally, you can't deny the talent in Dallas, and the Giants are ascending.

I think the unknown is what is possibly enticing to Watt, but also potentially harmful. As I noted, I could see AZ finishing anywhere from last to first in that division next year. If it's last, he's really going to regret going to a 'hopeful' franchise vs. a legitimate one.

I said I wouldn't blame him for chasing the money but I hope people call him out next year if he starts whining if that team stinks.

I would put AZ higher than last. They limped out the season at 8-8 mainly because of Murray's injury. I've not watched him much, but you have a young QB with high potential, the best WR in the league, a good defense that he (if healthy) makes great.

Disappointing, but a sneaky good move...

Odd contract, only two years. This tells me the Packers and other teams didn't want to spend a ton on a signing bonus for him, not really even about the cap.I'm not upset, Watt would have been a gamble. Yea, it would have been fun but I see why they didn't want to pay a huge signing bonus for him.

It would have been cool, but I wouldn't even give Watt one year at that price with our cap crunch. He has played 8 or less game 3 times in the last 5 years. Not to mention he is 30+ and his stats aren't what they used to be.

I keep seeing stuff about Russell Wilson, the QB drama in Green Bay must have gotten too boring for ESPN to stir up.

The Packers can't afford this deal, but that doesn't mean we have to try and paint Watt as less than he is. 2 of those five years were 4 and 5 years ago.

He's missed 8 games the last 3 years, all the same year and it was a fluke muscle injury He played 90+ pct of the snaps in the other two seasons and he's still one of the top 3-4 DL in the NFL.

We couldn't make that money work on that short of a deal, so there's that.

I don't blame him for taking all the money he can. I honestly don't think most adults would. Get paid, you only have a short time to play the game. And who knows what he wants to do at the end of it.

But right, don't whine if you're not competitive next season.

Appears J.J. Watt is going to the Arizona Cardinals. So close the book on that one ... thankfully.

Deal is 2 years/$31 million, with $23 million guaranteed. Yep, no way the Packers could have, or should have swung that.

Yep. There was never any chance they could squeeze that into a 2-year deal.

It sucks as Watt would have been perfect a lot of reasons. Among them, they'd still be able to get comp picks next year.

I thought the longer it went that Watt hadn't signed meant the better our chances were with the Browns and Steelers dropping out. AZ makes very little sense, but they do have one elite edge rusher they can pair him with. I don't believe in their Tiny Little QB, but, it's over now.

Just trade Josh Hader ow and this forum will slow to a crawl for the next few weeks!

I have no problem with Watt's pick, not that he needs my permission. "Contender" is in the eye of the beholder. Anyone see Tampa Bay as a Super Bowl contender this time last year? Anyone see the 49ers as a non-contender?

If he believes in them and their culture and their chances of winning a title, that's fine. Arizona has some upside. It's not like he went to the Jaguars.

I knew someone would bring up the Tampa thing but it's just not the same. Brady is a QB. There's a huge opportunity for QBs to influence every single offensive snap. Especially when your predecessor turned the ball over 45 times. He's not a dumb guy. He knew if he was even decent there with those weapons, they would compete.

That said, AZ being really good next year wouldn't be stunning. That's a good, inconsistent team close to being a really good one. Surprising because I didn't even see a rumor about AZ, but it does make sense with some time to digest. I thought he'd go for a more established QB, though.

I clearly made a mistake in thinking "contender" only meant Superbowl contender and that there would only be four or five teams he'd be choosing from. But really it's just a general pre-compliment and works with all but maybe four or five teams in the League.

Obviously he just hates shoveling his driveway all the time and I think we can all understand that.

Ok, how about the '17-'18 Eagles? There's plenty of examples besides the most recent of teams not really considered to be contenders surprising and contending if not winning it all.

There was a lot of discussion of Watt to Pittsburg, but I'd say AZ is just as much a contender as the Steelers...maybe moreso depending on what happens this offseason. AZ seems to be ascending while Pitt is falling.

Agreed. Arizona at least has direction. It just depends how much you believe in Murray as a franchise QB.

Pittsburgh has some talented skill players on both offense and defense, but they still seem like a rudderless ship. They should probably move on from Big Ben. Haskins isn't the answer. Landing either of Watson or Wilson probably turns them into a Super Bowl contender overnight, but I don't think they can afford to.

AZ is a much better spot than Pitt. The NFC in general is probably a better place to be. There's not a clear one or two favorites, and if you get to the NFCCG and play the Packers you're already in.

Ouch... too soon. Not wrong, but too soon. :(

I’d say the discussion of Watt to Pittsburgh had more to do with his brothers being there vs them being considered a legit contender.

I think that this is right. The brother factor was 99% of the reasoning there. With their cap situation, not surprising that it was completely unrealistic.

It is just too bad that the timing wasn't right on this for GB. It just would have been too cool to see a Wisconsin star find his way to the Packers. After seeing the monetary commitment, I am glad we didn't go that route because we can probably have more impact with multiple players being signed for that.

I guess we'll never really know whether it truly was timing & the Packers' cap or whether it was a true lack of legitimate interest (or, interest at FMV). Would a different year have allowed the Packers to potentially make a more competitive offer? Absolutely. Would they have? Who knows....

Yeah I can't imagine any Packer fan being too upset that they missed out on him. WOuld have been nice like you said but at that price I can see why they didn't get him. Might end up as a blessing in disguise - maybe they'll end up signing two other guys for the money Watt got.
