Report: Rodgers wants new contract (Update: May not want to return in 2021)

SeaBass
Rodgers could put some confirmable information out, so no one had to try & ascribe motive, but he trolls & plays aloof instead.

Hard for me to root for or care about a guy like that, no matter how good he is at throwing a ball.

I think someone hit the nail on the head earlier- the fact that he doesn't want to discuss what his actual issues are suggest that he or his advisors know that his issues are either small enough that they'll look trivial or are completely unreasonable, and thus won't play well in public.

I mean, Rodgers has a massive history of holding grudges over small things that extends literally to all aspects of his life. Why would we assume that this is any different?

But if he is this world class grudger, and I don't doubt it, why in the world would people think he is going to give in and show up this year?

The Packers should cut their losses and put him on the market now and get on with the Love era, really they should have been there a month ago. If you assume the Packers really wanted to move on next offseason anyway Rodgers did them a favor having the MVP year so they can get max value out of such an old player. I don't buy for a second there won't be a hot market for him, it only takes a few teams and off the top of my head I could see Broncos, Raiders, Titans, Dolphins, Saints as teams that would think Rodgers could put them over the top. I wouldn't count out teams like SF and NE either.

I agree. I would have just traded the dude back in May and moved on. Now we are still stuck with the drama of all of it and not going to get max value if we end up getting anything at all. Would have preferred to just deal him, Adams too if necessary, take our picks, got behind Love 100% and plowed ahead.

I'd rather see him sit out the season, unless you get some top end talent. The draft picks are the same now or after the season. If you can get Jeudy and/or a couple guys of that caliber, go for it. If not let him sit it out.

I agree until camp starts this whole thing has been meaningless. If he shows up then whatever. But if it drags out past camp he is a world class prima donna. He looks like a diva even if he shows and plays this year, I'm over him and Adams too if he goes this route with the Last Dance tweet. Move on and get people in that want to play in Green Bay. They talk about team and the people then publicly overshadow the team every chance they get.

There are certainly plenty here who agree with this but I feel like it is mostly spite and I hope the Packers are smart enough to realize that is not in their best interest. I don't want Love getting the starting job with that in the news every week. I like the Jeudy idea but any team trading for Rodgers is going to go all in with him over the next 3 years and probably want to keep their current team in tact other than maybe sending back their QB for cap purposes. Not everyone plays the perennial long game like the Pack, a lot of teams are just fine with taking a shot knowing they could have a few tough years after it is over.

I should have clarified, between trading him or letting him "retire," I'm going with retire if they can't get Jeudy caliber players back. If they're getting draft picks it doesn't matter when they trade him, the draft isn't until spring. And him sitting is better than the chance of him beating the Packers in the playoffs if it came to that. I don't think the return changes much for picks if you wait it out, and you might get a few more teams interested. Ideally he shows up to camp and we can move on, but this episode has tainted my already not stellar view of him. Great football player, complete narcissist. He has had plenty of opportunities to voice his grudge but instead prefers to be a mystery man, I'm over him.

I think he's going to show up to camp and he will likely get a hero's welcome as most people rejoice that our God is back. Then he's out after the season. If that's his plan, I'd rather just not have him play for us this year. Unpopular opinion, but I don't even want to see him win a Super Bowl in that scenario.

If he's not in camp day 1 but ends up playing for the Pack this year, I'd like to hear a chorus of boos from Lambeau. Petty? Probably, but it would be good to send him a message that we as fans don't appreciate the charade.

I think whether we can get the same next offseason if he sits out is debatable, in my opinion at his age we won't as this season has a lot of value. But the bigger issue to me is how having him holdout will affect the team and Love this year. I get you meant retire which could alleviate that but I don't really see that happening, I don't see the leverage that gives Rodgers but maybe I am missing something there.

If he shows up and they make some grumbling comments about putting everything behind them, then go out and win a Super Bowl, I would call that a Win-Win-Win and the best possible outcome. I've never been a big fan of Rodgers as a person and nothing he's done this past 6 months changes that, but I do want the Packers to have the best outcome. And if they actually won a Super Bowl, what could Rodgers possibly complain about? That he threw a fit, they offered him an extension, he declined and the team went out and won it all anyways? It would make Rodgers look like an even bigger dick to throw a fit next offseason. He is signed for several more years. The Packers can roll with him as long as they want, he can retire gracefully after winning the Super Bowl and we can move on or he can have another near miss year and they can move on. If he doesn't report his year and wants to hold out until they fire Gute then they can put him on the reserve list and move on with Love and trade Rodgers when the return is enough.

If he plays (and he probably already has his mind made up already) I don't see him showing up to camp until pretty late in order to stress out management even more.

I wish there were some sort of extension-and-trade we could do with him which would lower the cap hit on trading him this year.

If his plan is to fade into the sunset, that's an entirely different story. If it's to keep whining and reunite with Adams in Minnesota (I know he has limited control over this, just saying), go pound sand.

I'll admit that Rodgers had me fooled. Not the last couple years, but originally I thought he was a completely different guy than he turned out to be. Not an evil human being, but a self absorbed pain in the butt. The juxtaposition with Giannis right now isn't helping. Team Rodgers or Team Love? Eh, team Giannis, lol.

The grudge stuff is bigger than the normal athlete motivation. It's like a personality disorder and it's going to disrupt what is legitimately his best chance at winning a second title. I personally think he's just ready to blame anyone in the cross hairs preemptively because he hasn't been back to the Super Bowl. He has no argument when it comes to Gute. Gute is the reason he's even close.

LOL we aren't there yet but if this happens he can rot at home as far as I am concerned, this has been a major difference from the Favre saga to me.

What would it do to our cap if we traded him now? I remember it was a big hit, but has that changed since June 1st or whatever day that was?

Rappaport reporting that Rodgers has now told those close to him that he will play this upcoming season, which begs the question, what was the point of the offseason? He has lost a bunch of the fan base and got nothing. I know he wanted to test the Packers to see if he could get out of town but it was pretty clear early on that they were not budging. I know he hasn't said anything so he has plausible deniability, but everyone knows what happened.

Brewer Fanatic Contributor

Mike Florio is sad.

Edit: He literally tweeted this 10 seconds after I posted that:

"Dustin Pedroia doesn't have the strength or bat speed to hit major-league pitching consistently, and he has no power......He probably has a future as a backup infielder if he can stop rolling over to third base and shortstop." Keith Law, 2006

Rodgers probably wanted to see if they would call his bluff. Didn't really lose anything by doing what he did. His fan base will have his back as soon as he starts throwing for touchdowns again. I also think it is much more likely they move on from him after the season and get draft picks.

All will be roses if they win. If they don’t, he’ll be a pain in the ass again.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.
