Report: Rodgers wants new contract (Update: May not want to return in 2021)

I mean, he’s busy right now training for his golf match.

Yeah….. he’s like Constanza trying to get fired from the Yankees. Missing team stuff, flaunting pictures of his vacation in Hawaii while others are working in camp, being sidetracked with social media stuff, hosting Jeopardy, and playing golf on national TV. I really don’t care if he does some of these things, but as a team player his focus is everywhere but getting better.

[sarcasm]No worries. Rodgers has just left his car in the parking lot, so people assume he is working hard.[/sarcasm]

HOw many times did Favre skip mandatory mini camps and crap like that?

Several….. so this is the same as that?

I definitely didn't say that. But missing camps in and of itself isn't a big deal, and missing reps for a 37-year-old guy isn't a big deal.

I compared Rodgers' offseason to Favre's (several) offseasons several times. There are a LOT of similarities.

The first year Favre started pulling this, people panicked and thought the end was coming. Eventually people figured out it was a way to avoid mini-camps that he didn't enjoy.

Rodgers has been more contentious in the offseason than Favre (i.e. there is more to it), but it wouldn't surprise me if missing minicamps was part of the plan. He was here a couple offseasons when Favre was pulling the stunt... I'm sure he learned what to do.

He won his golf match…. Clutch putting. I could see that it, or rather beating Tommy, was really important to him.

Silly as it sounds, this might actually help the Packers. He maybe needed an edge on Brady in some small way to come back to the Packers and risk it again in the NFC. It’s either sit out and be a poor teammate, or come back with a great group and beat Tommy again.

One more thing…. RIGHT after the match, on the green where 12 hit a roughly 12 foot put to win on the 16th, Brady said to 12 something like, “I hope that you aren’t THIS prepared for the season,” and 12 said something I couldn’t make out….. not sure if it was. Rewound it a bunch. Just looking for a clue to see if he is going to be back to start training camp.

Don't remember his name, but wasn't there a center who only signed one-year contracts so that he could "hold out" for most of Camp specifically because he hated it?

I believe you're referring to Ken Rutgers, an offensive tackle who did exactly that. And that was for training camp

I want to say it was a guard for the Seahawks, but Google is failing me right now.

Rodgers statement that he has been working on his "mental health", his comment to Brady it was a projection that "he was unhappy with his boss," grinning and replying "I don't know" when BA asked him if he would be playing QB during the tournament. He's had ample opportunity to definitively say he is not showing up and why, and he dodged it each time. He'll show up for camp and say everything was blown out of proportion.

Agreed. This is his way of tweaking Packers' management right now, but when push comes to shove, he'll be there. He cares too much about the fans, his teammates and his legacy.

Well, he cares about one of those 3 things, but fortunately for the Packers, every decision he makes is based on that one.

Good point. But he also knows that his treatment of the fans and his teammates also directly impacts his legacy.

Does it? Favre pretty did whatever he could to tarnish it, and he was welcomed back into the family. If this thing does go south in the next few weeks, it will take some time, but he will be back in the family with his number retired.

It'll happen in due time, absolutely, from a fan standpoint at least. But this one feels a little harsher/different, doesn't it? The Favre one resolved mutually. I'm not entirely convinced that Aaron won't take his ball and go home (metaphorically), then refuse to come back. Dude is an EPIC grudge-holder.

Interesting timing as ESPN decided to run with that story today (from all indications the offer was turned down earlier this summer).

The previous reports leaking before the NFL draft were also questionable timing.

Could the writers be as big of a group of drama queens as Lord Aaron?

At least Stephen A. is outraged at the horrible treatment of Rodgers by the Packers brass. Couldn’t think of a bigger arse to be in Rodgers corner...

Stephen A. is a pretty big douche and some of his takes are terrible…but his take on the Rodgers situation is pretty accurate.

The whole extension thing is really irrelevant though because:

A) Likely they did it just to look better in their themselves knowing Rodgers wouldn’t accept anyway.

B) Without the actual details it could be meaningless. If the contract didn’t basically tie Rodgers to the Packers for 3-5 more years it might as well be a $250mil extension.

A lot of writers are now starting to run with the idea that Rodgers will skip 4-5 games of the regular season…then magically show up. Sorry, that doesn’t make a lot of sense. Either he shows up to start or why come at all? All reports say Rodgers cares deeply about his teammates and coaching staff. Either he says sorry guys I just can’t do it…or he shows up to be with them. If Rodgers plays I can’t really fathom him watching the team have a crummy record 1/3 of the way through the season.

I wonder if he has overestimated the fan reaction or at least if he did it was earlier on but his reluctance to be seen in Wisconsin speaks volumes, I don't think he wants to hear any boos. He was conspicuously NOT attending any of the Bucks playoff games, publicly at least, who can say if he may have been there behind the scenes but I doubt it, someone would have seen him and reported it. How ironic that his cowardice on that front cost him being able to enjoy the Bucks championship run in person.

I agree on the contract and I figured the team leaked it now for that exact reason.

If he skips 4-5 games he should not see the field at all.

I think he drastically over-estimated the fans taking his side as well.

Rumors I've heard were that it would have made him the highest paid QB in the league again, which is supposedly what he wants. Completely unverifiable absent someone with actual knowledge of the real offer confirming, but that would suggest that this wasn't just a token/paper extension.

Yeah, who knows, I just meant that I think it was possible that they knew his heels were dug in and they threw the offer at him anyway knowing he'd say no and they could look at everybody and say "we offered him a record deal, not much else we can do." While that would be true, I think Gute is satisfied with either outcome. He'll take Rodgers for a few more years but my random gut feeling is that he is totally content to move on without.

Probably so. I think both side still know that they're married for 2021 regardless, and still represent both sides' best chance to win a title. After 2021, though, I'm equally certain the Packers are/would be interested in moving on.

When this all broke on draft night, there were reports shortly after that the Packers had already offered to extend or renegotiate his contract. Even this rumor might be the tail end of those talks and not anything new from the last few months. Since it's all rumor who knows.

I seem to recall Rodgers being very vocal about players should vote down the last NFL CBA and the rank and file basically ignored him. I don't recall his concern back then but could part of his concern be about the changes to holdouts and fines which 99% of the players wouldn't care about? Was it in his mind then to holdout at some point and the drafting of Love just gave him a "reasonsable" excuse. I wouldn't be surprised if all of this goes back to the release of his BFF Kumerow...

I wonder how the Bucks championship will effect the perceptions of a subset of Packer fans who just want the Packers to give anything to Rodgers to get him back. Will some of them be more content to roll with Love and a few years of growing pains now versus before the Bucks won.

I would venture to guess that the vast majority of those willing to bow down to Rodgers' every demand are more of the casual variety that likely didn't care about the Bucks until they beat the Nets a few weeks ago. The more hardcore fans, I believe, are more fans of the teams rather than individual players.

I personally believe that Aaron Rodgers' presence makes the Packers a strong contender this year. But if the Jordan Love era begins this season, it isn't going to make me any less of a Packer fan. This is still a very talented squad that should still be competitive regardless of who is starting at QB. I don't understand those who are saying this is a 4-win team without Rodgers. There is a ton of talent on this team, Rodgers or no Rodgers.
