Report: Rodgers wants new contract (Update: May not want to return in 2021)

I always laugh at those those think it’s tough to be a Wisconsin sports fan. It’s been amazing the amount of good teams and players we have been fortunate enough to bet to enjoy as entertainment. So they’ve lost some championship games. So what? The Packers won a SB about a decade ago and it didn’t have any greater affect on my than last years loss to TB.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I'm glad for you. Other people enjoy and react to sports and entertainment differently than you do. I find it odd that your reaction to that is to mock people.

I apologize for seeming to be insensitive to those fans such as yourself. I do. It’s just very odd that people can’t find more joy/happiness in Wisconsin sports teams because there has been a lot there to celebrate. I see a lot of negative posts/tweets/etc… and it is amazing to me how effected people are by something completely out of their control and that truly doesn’t have much to really do with their lives.

Just because the miserable times have been miserable doesn't mean the good and joyous times aren't being celebrated. I appreciate the fact that we have generally enjoyed competitive teams in this era. But being a fan to me is accepting both the highest highs and the lowest lows. I'm elated after the Super Bowl wins and it feels like a breakup for a couple days after a playoff loss. I'm happy for you if you can feel the same after a Super Bowl win or NFCCG loss. Really.

But that's definitely not for me and I couldn't feel that way if I wanted to. I'm all about experiencing the highest highs and lowest lows for what they are and taking the bad with the good.

Yes, there do come times when it's good to have things put in perspective and remember that it's just a game. But it's also games that millions enjoy as a hobby that is ingrained in their everyday lives. It's ok to be emotionally affected by it. There are a lot of things that are out of the control of people that affect us and how we feel.

I don't live and die on sports wins and losses like some fans. But I understand how it is for some people. I was a lot more..... emotional about sports when I was younger. I'm older and wiser now, I think.

I think saying that it's been "tough", even though WI sports have been competitive is looking at the fact that since 2011 the Wisconsin sports teams

Brewers 0 - 2 in LCS

Bucks 0- 1 in CCS

Packers 0 - 4 in CTG

I'd literally rather lose in the first round, than allow myself to get emotionally invested in something that I know is going to end in "heartbreak"

Am I literally heartbroken? No. But I do get invested in an exciting run, and then we lose, and it sucks.

I STILL remember the 1982 World Series, when Gorman Thomas struck out to end the game and my young self couldn't come to grips with the fact that we lost.

I hope he plays for GB and sucks. Getting benched would be the cherry on top.

No. Why would you want this unless you are a Bears or Vikings fan.

Well, I'm half joking, but I don't think the Packers are going to the Super Bowl this year regardless, not for any defined reason, just that they had 2 semi-close shots and getting a 3rd straight seems unlikely. Rodgers not playing as well this year seems likely. On paper, the team looks very good, but things just seem to go wrong eventually.

I've accepted they probably have some down years coming without Rodgers anyway. So while the ideal scenario is that they win the Super Bowl, I'd take some satisfaction from Lord Aaron having his ego checked by just playing terrible football and the team deciding they don't want him to play. Then he can finish washing out for Washington Football Team or something.

I don't think there's a ton of shame in losing a game or series where your team falls just short of reaching the final game or series. If they're in the final four that's damn good.

Sometimes I look at the Packers' Wikipedia page and look at the list of 21 playoff appearances since 1993, including 14 division championships, never missing the playoffs more than 2 consecutive seasons in that time. Reaching 8 NFC championship game appearances and 3 super bowls, winning twice. That's close to 30 years of mostly good times, franchises would drool over that legacy of success. Over the years we've become desensitized to merely making the playoffs and I can't really say that's unreasonable, at some point those appearances need to pay off. Maybe they could have a small handful of additional super bowl appearances but if it wasn't for New England I'm not sure we'd look at it as the big failure that we do.

If I could hand pick a Wisconsin team to win a league championship I wouldn't even have to think about it, it'd be the Brewers in a landslide. I'd pick them to do it twice if I could. Baseball still feels like the most difficult sport to win it all, even rich teams go through droughts like the Yankees and Dodgers have. A Brewers World Series championship before I die, pretty please with whipped cream and a cherry on top. I'll take the Bucks in the here and now though since they're on the cusp, I don't have supreme confidence in them but a finals appearance might just be good enough.

Brewers making playoffs = Packers making Super Bowl= Badgers making Final 4= Bucks winning it all

Based on this, there have been many times over the last 25 years that I have been a pretty happy sports fan. Especially at this moment, each of the above have/had legitimate possibilities of getting to the specified level.

Yeah I mean if someone had that opinion around say 2006 or 2007 I could agree. At that time the Brewers had a postseason drought extending back to '82, the Bucks were a hopeless franchise who many thought would be playing in a new city in a few years, they had won a total of two playoff series since the '80's. The Packers were successful but their last Super Bowl win was '96, they were coming off two bad years in a row and were about to need a new QB.

From '07 until today the Packers have had 11 playoff appearances with a 12-10 playoff record over that time period, 8 division titles, and 1 conference championship and Super Bowl win. The Brewers have had 5 postseason appearances, 2 league championship series appearances, and 2 division titles. The Bucks have had 7 playoff appearances, 2 division titles, and 1 conference championship series appearance (not including this current season).

I wish my teams won the title every year too but its far from difficult to be a Wisconsin sports fan.

This is a Packers thread so the woe is me from Packers fans can be a little much and I know there are lots of Packers fans that don't even care about the Bucks are Brewers. However there are also a set of fans that care far more about the Brewers and Bucks than the Packers, including me. Since this is Brewerfan.net I imagine even the majority here care about the Brewers much more than the Packers. It is fair to say the vast majority of the people here have never seen a Brewers or Bucks championship so I have to laugh at people that set their standards so low that they are happy with no championships, it has been brutal to be a Milwaukee sports fan and nobody can say otherwise.

I suppose if you are trying to compare Wisconsin sports to comparable states/markets it probably isn't that bad. We have fairly competent front offices and a pretty successful college team. Pretty good considering the small market nature and terrible weather. Honestly I am not sure what other small market or similar state has had better luck the past 10-15 years. Maybe Kansas City? They have the two World Series appearances, won in one of them, obviously have the Chiefs now, and many of those same fans would have KU basketball (with a semi recent championship and many Final Fours). Then any NHL fans would have the recent Blue's championship

'Isn't that bad' is probably underselling it, as it's actually been quite good. Yeah, Boston sports have been crazy the last 20 years, but we've had it quite good relative to most markets regardless of size.

I think a lot of it comes down to how consistently elite some of the sports have been just to be let downs. Packers and the Bucks are perennial top threats to win a championships. So winning a division or even make the semi final round isn't exactly an accomplishment in anyone's eyes.

People want/expect them to take the next step, aka win a 'ship, but usually the team chokes or has a heartbreaking end to the season. I think fans are a bit spoiled and forget how hard it is to take that next step and win it all. It took the Dodgers 8 years to win it all on a massive payroll and winning 92+ games every year. Despite all that 50% of the time they couldn't even win the NLDS and won the World Series in a COVID season.

I guess I'll steer this back to the original point. Or I'll try to.

It's not like Aaron Rodgers choke slammed his girlfriend. He didn't make a disparaging comment about a minority group. He's just kind of being a diva about things he wants in regards to pay and team construction.

As others have said, winning the championship is really hard. You don't get in a lot of chances. I'd rather take my chances with an all-world quarterback, then sucking the next five years because people just don't like this guy.

I think the point others have made earlier in the thread is that many markets WOULD view that as an accomplishment, and many would be grateful for the opportunities that Wisconsin sports have had. We've become extraordinarily spoiled or, perhaps, jaded in that regard.

I just don't think it's spoiled when you're sometimes a bad call or stupid decision away from the championship and continue to do that for years and years. The Bucks, I just chalk most of their failures up to growing pains. But the Packers should have had 2nd title, at least a Super Bowl appearance after 2010, and they should probably have at least two.

It's all relative. The Bengals or Football Team would be saying the same thing if they'd come close and lost for 10 years.

I think it's fair to say that being a Wisconsin sports fan over this century has been both very rewarding and enjoyable, and at times very painful and heartbreaking.

Yes, and I don't think you get to heartbreak until you've reached a certain level of success.

Look no further than Brewer's fans for proof. Team was a league joke for decades and it only took till the third consecutive postseason appearance for everyone to start complaining about the team. Even when we are leading the division people still find ways to complain about what Counsell and Stearns are doing.

People are greedy, especially when it comes to the success of their sports teams. Being consistently the same is not fun unless you are winning the championship yearly.

Didn't one of the Chiefs players call their season a total failure because they lost in the Super Bowl?

No kidding. Take a look at how Minneapolis/St. Paul has done over the last couple decades with sports teams. You can add in college sports if you want it to be a little more hilarious.

I'd assume most here are old enough to remember that for about 20-25 years the Bucks and Brewers were two of biggest laughing stocks in their sports. UW was awful in both sports until the early 90s. Essentially the Bucks had 2 good year in my life before Giannis. Heck, Packers were bad until the early 90s. Combine that with no team except the Packers has won a title in most of our lifetimes, or adult lifetimes at least.

So, it's easy to see how people feel invested or frustrating it is now that they get so close but continue to come up short in usually painful ways. Basically, we've put in our time and deserve one. While also acknowledging how good it is now in that all teams are good. I try to remind younger people of how bad it used to be whenever it makes sense, not in a woe is me way but just for them appreciate what they have now. With all the brutal UW football closes losses over the years I've attended my friends and I used to say it would be better just to get beat soundly and not deal with the 'heartache'. Then 59-0 happened and we learned our lesson.

Oddly, with having come across so many overly cocky type Packers fans(ages under 35ish) over the years and seeing how they act to other teams fans as if GB is just destined to be good because they're GB. They're so spoiled and have never known them other than being good. I actually look forward to them being put in their place a bit which is eventually gonna happen and likely very soon.

I think everyone is allowed to feel how they feel. Wanting to see a WC is not spoiled.

I think telling other fans that they're spoiled or entitled because we've made the playoffs a few times and the Packers have lost (occasionally in embarrasing ways) in the NFC title game over and over is just kinda silly. People feel how they feel.

I was a kid in the 80's, but I remember the Packers sucking hard. I have never seen the Brewers or Bucks win a world title. I've never seen the Bucks even make it to the finals, but I've seen them make it to the conference finals 5 times in my life, only to come up short every single time. That sucks

As a state, our pro sports teams are 0-7 in conference title games/series since 2011. That sucks. The law of averages says that should be pretty tough to match, but here we are. Then there's the Badgers getting hosed in the Nat'l title game in 2015 by the refs against Duke.

Yep. We've had some success..... some good teams. Only to get right on the doorstep and get crushed (often in embarrassing fashion like the Brian Bostick don't touch it game), or absolutely confusing and soul crushing fashion, when RRR decided to start a completely gassed and useless Shawn Marcum in the most important game of the year (2011). EVeryone can feel how they feel. It's not spoiled or entitlement. It's just how people feel. I don't think people would feel nearly the way they feel if we'd break through just ONCE in a while and even lost in the finals or the World Series, or whatever, but I think (as we've talked about in the Bucks thread), we're just so used to having it snatched from us that it maybe feels worse than it really is.

Heck, I said the other day that my "best" sports memory from the last decade, aside from the Super Bowl in 2010 is the Brewers walk off win of a divisional playoff series. If that's spoiled and entitled, I'd hate to see what deprived is......

aside from the Super Bowl in 2010

But as some may say, ‘Other than that Mrs Lincoln…..’ ;)

I'll say that my sports fandom is like 75 percent baseball, 15 percent basketball and 10 percent football... Do a sb (to me) has a lot less emotional resonance than a ws win would have.
