Report: Rodgers wants new contract (Update: May not want to return in 2021)

[sarcasm]Rodgers is working with the Packers to reduce his cap hit![/sarcasm]

Well, by not showing up to OTAs, he forfeits a $500k bonus. I've seen two conflicting reports about if it will lower our cap hit for this year or next (which seems odd to me), but either way, he is helping! ;)

Not that today is really a big surprise but I am so over this guy. I'd shrug my shoulders if I heard today they sent him off. I don't even think I really want to root for him anymore but I don't want the Packers to slide into insignificance either. I'll never really like him again, which I know cuts him to the core.

I'm still waiting to see the "real" story. Offseason drama is click-bait fodder. I'll hold my opinion until I hear Rodgers talk about it.

I mean if it's really all smoke and no fire he's had like a month to clear it up. There's a reason he isn't.

I think everyone knows by now something is up. Even in the minimal amount that has been said, that much has been conceded. I think what we don't know is whether the sides are talking, how far apart they are, if there is even a willingness from Rodgers to come back to the table, etc. It's May though, so there just isn't a whole lot to go on.

If there isn't any truth to his issues it he would have reported rather than relaxing and doing karaoke in Hawaii.

I do agree, it'd be nice if he had the stones to just say what was bothering him and make it official.

He wasn't gonna report no matter what but I don't think that has to do with the rift with GB's front office.

Did he skip last season? Maybe there weren't any due to the pandemic but regardless he knows full well that people are going to read this move as evidence that there's a rift with the front office and he stays away anyway.

I read a story on what Rodgers said on ESPN last night, but it’s still unclear to me what he wants.

I think it solidifies the report that it's all about Gutenkunst. Rodgers made that pretty explicit with his omissions: "I love Jordan, I love my teammates, I love the coaching staff..." This is an interesting showdown now between the MVP QB and GM and how the Packers move forward. If this is really about the relationship between these two, I'm not sure I see a way ahead with both still within the same organization. You can't reassign/promote Gute because that is an obvious "firing" and Rodgers winning. If you keep Gute, you likely have to trade Rodgers. If you go down that route, does Rodgers want a say in where he gets traded with the threat to retire if they don't? It wouldn't surprise me to see Gute resign and Rodgers stay.

It’s about the people!! Benjamin Franklin, Andrew Jackson, Alexander Hamilton, etc......

Yeah, a lot of cliches and nonsense....

If it's about the people, it's really about the Green Bay Packers' fans.... those people. It's about the ones that support the team and follow the team, pay the bills, and against all odds have a NFL team. Rodgers is just about as clueless and lost as one can get. Then again, it is about the people.... just those he's forgetting about.

Saw an article that says Rodgers has been golfing with Elway and that could be considered tampering.

Maybe the Packers gave their permission for Rodgers to discuss his contract needs moving forward so that when the Packers announce the trade of Rodgers to the Broncos on June 2nd there wont be any issues.

Oh, there is a fire, no doubt about that. But is it the California forest fires that the news is reporting or my neighbor burning wet leaves; which looks a lot like the CA forest fires, but mostly just smoke.

Of course there is something... but remember this all blew up at the draft just because it made good headline material. Nothing new happened that wasn't there all offseason.

I'm waiting to hear an on camera interview from him and not second hand information or a off the record conversation at a horse race...

Under no circumstances should the Packers do anything with Gute. Force Rodgers to retire before that. If that is actually the issue here and Rodgers won't budge, he's an absolutely pathetic baby. Gute is the reason Rodgers is as close to a championship as he is.

That's is what happened yesterday on ESPN with Kenny Maynes. There was a lot of typical side talk when Rodgers did address it, but pretty easy to read between the lines. No insight into how to resolve the issue or what has transpired during their discussions though.

It’s stupid that he just won’t say what his issue is, we know what it is he just has some inexplicable issue speaking it plainly. Yesterday Julio Jones says, “I’m outta here.” Aaron Rodgers? Political double talk. I’m over it.

Whatever happens I’m fine with it. Retire, trade, come back I’m just ready for the next step.

It does bother me that he believes his MVP season is some big factor in his favor. To me all it proves is he’s had it in him but wasn’t tapping into it before Jordan Love arrived. 2 seasons prior he throws 25 and 26 touchdowns. Where was the MVP 48 touchdown seasons those years?

I think all of your points are spot-on. I do think that for his astounding unwillingness just to say what's going on or what his issues are, he offered enough details to read between the lines. Basically, he saw the Love pick as incentive to up his game, he did so, and he thought that would lead the Packers to commit to him long-term. But they didn't, and he's ticked. His comments about 'people' really mean 'me'.

And I do hope he realizes that most people can see through this veil of 'I'm not airing my dirty laundry in public' schtick and understand that he's just having his minions do it behind the scenes so that it does leak out without being directly attributable to his camp.

It’s Rodgers playing mind games via the media, like a married couple who have a fight, he won’t say what’s wrong and implies the other should know what’s wrong, because if he says what’s wrong they’ll apologize and try to make it up to him.

With how punitive the CBA is for a player under contract to no show his team, Rodgers would need to be fairly liquid to fork over all the money the team can fine him and claw back in that scenario. His “people” have probably informed him of this. For someone with such a huge ego, I don’t think retiring because of a tiff would satisfy him either, so really he has no good options but to play mind games and then show up in July and say he’s moving forward

The problem with that is it doesn't matter, he looks like a diva either way.

The thing is I think Rodgers has a very relatable reason for feeling the way he feels. He's just so deep into his vendettas and I told you so's and verbal digs that he just loses me. He's a smart guy, I think he's a little too into how smart he is. Call it pompous, call it hubris, whatever it is it's very off-putting.

I’m also kind of worried that the Broncos might be the only trade partner that makes sense. If they sense that the return could be smaller and I just don’t think the Packers should accept anything less than a bonanza of picks and players in a trade. I’d rather see him retire than give some other team a bargain deal.

Might as well just jump to about the 7:20 mark as the beginning is typical ESPN nonsense.

"A lot of this was put in motion last year and the wrench was just kind of thrown into it when I won MVP."

What happened last year could be any one of a number of things, anything from Love getting drafted to Kumerow getting axed. But when he talks about a wrench getting thrown in when he won the MVP, that seems to indicate that his contract has a lot to do with this.

Mahomes makes 45 million per year and Rodgers deal is at 33.5 million per year. Packers probably going to have to give him a huge raise to make him happy. Really wish he would have thrown his little fit a couple weeks before the draft, would have been much easier to deal him then because they would known exactly what they would be getting back in the 2021 Draft.

I think Rodgers will eventually back down and become a good soldier again once training camp rolls around. He is a player who cares very much about his legacy as a Packer, and very much for the fanbase that has cheered him on for 15 years. If his goal was to try to make a point that he feels disrespected that the Packers put a contingency plan in place to move on from him, mission accomplished. The vast majority of fans want him back very much. But it has gotten to the point where most fans also want this to go away. If this drags into training camp, and there is still mystery surrounding Rodgers true intentions and what truly upset him, the fanbase will eventually turn on him. But if he shows up in July ready to work, and basically says "bygones are what they are, but I'm a Packer, and I'm here to win a Super Bowl", fans will quickly forget the diva behavior.

Honestly just trade the guy on June 2nd and be done with it.

There are still a boatload of teams willing to give up a stupid haul for a 37 year old, may as well take advantage of it while you can. The day when someone else is under center is inevitable anyway. Might as well get something for him on his way out rather than just be stuck with an obvious malcontent.

And if this is about money that's ridiculous. If you're hurt about other guys making more than you, get over yourself. That has always been a thing. You get a new contract, you're the top dog for a little bit and then after a couple years your contract is outdated and other guys end up getting bigger deals. If you don't like it then sign 1 year deals rather than mutli year deals with big guarantees.

He didn't seem to have much issue with his contract or salary after a couple lackluster seasons in '18 and '19.
