NFC Championship: Buccaneers @ Packers - Sunday, Jan 24th, 2:05 PM

I think that's a disingenuous argument. There MIGHT be one year the cap doesn't go up and if that's the case, it'll be because of a global pandemic that for the first time in NFL history caused games to be played without fans.

The NFL's revenue has been rising at a steady rate minus extremely rare circumstances. I just posted a link that goes over the NFL's financial future.

https://www.digitaltveurope.com/2020/12/18/nfl-close-to-us100-billion-broadcast-deal/

So unless there's another global pandemic that disrupted the NFL revenue stream, I think we can all make a logical assumption that either they spread the hit to the cap over several seasons thereby raising the cap beyond the floor they set for this year or they won't and expected rise in the cap that everyone assumed we'd see pre-covid...will come a year later.

I think you missed the overall point: "The Packers will be over the cap in 2021" is an educated guess. As is "the cap will go up significantly in 2022". Neither is fact. It's unfair to criticize a poster for saying the first statement, while presenting the second as fact.

I think you're really nit-picking here and I understood your point.

While it's a fair point that nothing is absolutely certain, I would be curious how someone would conclude that the cap both goes down this year AND doesn't drastically increase the following year. The cap has dropped once in NFL history and even then...it didn't really drop, it was an uncapped year and a lockout.

This really seems like a weird hill to take a stand. I've seen you make absolute statements about the Brewers not signing certain contracts and there was less certainty in that than there is in the NFL salary cap increasing with a 100 Billion+ TV deal getting signed and league revenues constantly rising.

So perhaps I could have said it's a near certainty, but I think I was pretty accurate. There are reports now that the cap will be closer to what it was this year so they can spread the cap hit out over several seasons, leaving the Packers in decent shape with regards to the cap. Certainly nowhere near Cap Hell....which was what I was arguing.

Because Leonhard is a Pettine disciple.

Leonhard would also be a Rex Ryan disciple.

I've seen what Leonhard has done with the talent he's had in the very same scheme the Packers run.

I don't think everyone who's coached under Pettine should be excluded because he's come up short. And I'll own that I wanted Gregg Williams at one point, but I think it's fair to say Leonhard doesn't come with the same ego and baggage that Williams does...and I was very wrong on that one.

Honestly, before Sunday I felt the defense had come far enough to give Pettine one more year. I'm just stuck on the play. I can't get past it. Pettine disciples don't bother me because Pettine disciples didn't call the play. Pettine bothers me because he called the play and I just don't believe that anyone who would call such a foolish scheme in a critical moment of the NFC Championship Game has any business being a defensive coordinator of any team much less my team.

I hadn't. I've always given the benefit of the doubt to the coaches, but I just think the talent we have on defense was too good to not be top 10.

They did really turn it around just around or after the mid-point, but that was also around when MLF was talking about how they needed to play better, be more aggressive, and fly to the ball.

So I don't know if he gets the credit for that. But we all agree, he gets the blame for that insanely bad call.

Again, I think we're still at a disconnect here, and I think we should move on at this point. My point was that it's unfair to chide another poster for stating that the Packers are over the salary cap for 2021 (especially when, as of today they'd be over EITHER of the cap levels being proposed) on a semantics-based argument and then implying that what happens after that can be said with any sort of certainty. So, I'd ask you to perhaps evaluate the height of the ground you're making your stand on as well...

I've seen you make absolute statements about the Brewers not signing certain contract

I doubt that very much, as I have a personal policy to never speak in absolutes when it comes to sports. Anyway....

A $196m cap would give the Packers a LOT more flexibility.

Had a good conversation with someone today regarding the Packers game. We agreed that we have no problem with the late FG. Had Rodgers gotten to the 2 or 3 in a scramble up the middle, we would have gone for it on 4th down. Thinking about it, IF we got the TD, IF we got the 2pt conversion, then we would have had to stop their special teams, then stop Brady, and hope they didn’t have a chance for a very long FG, THEN we likely would have had to win the OT coin toss, THEN score a TD. That’s a lot of variables to go right there. But by kicking the FG they needed a stop and then the ball would be in their hands.

I still reiterate the key play in the 4th quarter was missing an open MVS on a 3rd down (or was it 2nd down?). If Rodgers puts any air under that ball, we’re in the Super Bowl. I’m guessing that’s the throw he wants back when he’s reflecting on the game.

Still, feels weird knowing that we lost the game. 6 years ago it felt like it was stolen from us, but we had many opportunities in this one and just couldn’t get over the hump. There’s that weird statistic that comes with a huge caveat, but Rodgers hasn’t had many 4th quarter comebacks...yes, usually his teams are ahead. But when behind, they often don’t finish those comebacks like Favre, Brees, etc. of course, the opposite of the stat would be saying Stafford is a great QB because he’s so good in the 4th quarter and ignoring his teams are almost always behind after 3 quarters.

Wade Phillips always reminds me of a Bond villain.

I see him on the sideline, and it just shouts to me, "We meet again, Mr. Bond."

Brady playing great defense so far.
