Brewers sign UTL Jace Peterson to minor league deal

I don't think it is ever a personal attack on Jace, I think the issue is that we don't ever have anyone better to use when needed.

Except he's barely been needed, taking only 97 (20th most, about 2.2%) of the Brewers 4,382 total position player plate appearances from 2020-21. When he has been sparingly called upon, he has posted a 115 wRC+, putting him in a three way tie for 5th on the team along with Yelich & Wong.

I know Jace isn't really any good, but sometimes I don't get the vitriol that seems to always come his way. After all, he has posted an OPS+ over 100 in both 2020 and thus far in 2021.

Yeah, he gives them professional AB's consistently. For an extra guy, that's all you can hope for.

Yea, Jace is a decent utility player.

He can play multiple positions, he takes walks at an above average rate, and he has a little bit of power. I'm fine with him in the role he has. In 97 at bats over the two seasons with the Brewers, Jace has drawn 20 walks leading to roughly a .350 OBP and he's hit 4 home runs.

Jace has a great at-bat every once in a while but overall, he just isn't very good. He just can't find the consistency to make it at the MLB level. I wish we could find a suitable replacement but those guys are hard to find these days it seems.

A healthy Brewers team has Wong, Adames, Urias, Shaw, Robertson, Reyes ahead of Peterson. Dare I say that Hernan should be ahead of him as well. He's literally the 8th best option for 3B, SS and 2B.

If he hasn't had a meaningful number of plate appearances, then his wRC+ is just noise, isn't it? Or if he has a good wRC+, would you suggest he should be in the lineup as often as would be appropriate for the fifth-best batter on the team? His wRC+ is 83 this season.

unfortunately, with travis shaw out, jace peterson is now the second best option for first base.

I always told my buddies that teams that have playoff hopes don't have guys like JP on the roster. I was absolutely incorrect. He's played well and has been a cog that has held a lot of this together the last 2 months. Glad I was wrong.

Can any CBA savant clarify to me if Jace is arbitration eligible next year? Baseball reference says yes and Spotrac says he is a UFA.

Based on his service time he should have one more year of arbitration eligibility before free agency, I'm not sure why spotrac is saying he's a free agent next year. I think it's possible for a free agent to negotiate a deal where they can opt out of arbitration at the end of the guaranteed portion of their contract, but I would be surprised if a low level signing like Peterson was able to secure such a clause. Usually it's older established guys coming over from Japan or Cuba who have a contract like that.

Jace has found his consistency. A former 1st round draft pick has found his game and it’s been awesome for the Brewers. I’ll gladly admit I was wrong.

The OBP in 2020 and 2021 has been unreal. I will take a utility infielder with a .400 OBP any day.
