Benintendi?

The Red Sox in serious talks with teams in trading Benintendi.

 

Apparently the Red Sox are looking for OF or SP. I am not sure on how much value Benintendi has and what it would take to get him. Maybe Ray and Ashby or Small and Ward.

 

Hard to put a value on Benintendi.

I like the idea of taking a chance on his talent, but I'm not sure where he fits on this team and he only has one year of control beyond this season, so he's not necessarily a long term solution. He's also making $6.6M this year, and with our speculated financial situation that might leave very little to address more immediate needs.

I sorry but really hate trading Potential starting pitching in a trade as that is the way the brewers will be able to compete with young arms.

Well the obvious guy you'd send them would be McKinney who's still could qualify as a young outfielder along with a young arm and have Benintendi as a guy who can spell Cain and platoon some with Garcia.

Think Yelich would like to play in Boston and would waive his no-trade? I don't like Benintendi because he has the look of a rapid dropper, but I'd still take a couple years of him in exchange for unloading the Yelich contract.

Our team isnt amazing but the division is weak and we have some really good pieces. Burnes and Woodruff are really exciting. Obviously we need more after that. Lindblom and Hauser feel like 4/5 guys in a rotation. Lauer is the wild card. The bullpen has two really good arms and solid guys after that.

 

The lineup still has Yelich, Hiura, Cain but obviously needs help. It is more likely we win the division than trade Yelich

I feel like reading the threads for the past 1+months Freddy Peralta isn't on this team. When SP rotation options like above get mentioned Peralta isn't there. When Bullpen stalwarts are mentioned' he isn't there.

He came far enough in last offseason to make Brewers front office extend him "now" before it was too late to get a friendly deal. Don't sleep on him. He's come a long way from the Adam Lind trade. Shows promise and disappointment and he's so due to breakout i be more promising than disappointment. As he just enters the prime ages 24-30.

I don't think the extension really says anything about him other than they believe at worse he'll be usable. 15.5 guaranteed.

 

But he's not mentioned because he's not one of the 4 dominant pitchers we have and it's not clear where he fits in either role. Is he a starter? Meh...is he a reliever? If so, he's not one of the two dominant ones.

 

He's a very useful player, but he's not a dominant pitcher at this point. Some stretches...but he'll need to develop a consistent 2nd out pitch to take the next step.

Jim Bowden of The Athletic reports the Red Sox have been in “serious trade talks with multiple teams” centered around outfielder Andrew Benintendi.

 

Bowden reports the Red Sox are seeking a prospect package in return, with an emphasis on acquiring an outfielder or pitcher as the potential centerpiece. However, a deal doesn’t appear imminent. Benintendi is coming off a massively disappointing 2020 campaign in which he posted a disastrous .442 OPS and was limited to just 14 games due to a strained rib cage. The 26-year-old former elite prospect eclipsed the 15-homer and 20-steal plateaus in back-to-back seasons, after putting together a strong rookie debut in 2016, before enduring a dismal 2019 campaign in which he recorded an underwhelming .266/.343/.431 triple-slash line with 13 homers and 10 steals in 615 plate appearances. It makes sense for the Red Sox to explore his trade value, especially with plenty of veteran sluggers still floating out there in free agency.

A source told BostonSportsJournal's Sean McAdam that an Andrew Benintendi deal could happen soon.

 

The Marlins appear to be out of the mix. McAdam says others who have inquired include the Rangers, Astros and A's. Trading Benintendi at the nadir of his value is the kind of thing that could come back to bite Boston CBO Chaim Bloom. It's not as if the former Rays executive has done many great things in his first 15 months at the helm of the Red Sox.

A rival executive tells MLB.com's Mark Feinsand that he would be "shocked" if Andrew Benintendi is not traded before the end of this weekend.

 

We've seen growing buzz in recent days about a move involving Benintendi, with the Rangers, Astros, and Athletics being floated Tuesday as some of the possible suitors. Miami was known to have serious interest but apparently had trouble lining up a return package to Boston's liking. Benintendi suffered through a miserable, injury-plagued 2020 season and wasn't particularly great in 2019, but he posted a strong .290/.366/.465 batting line over 148 games in 2018 and finished second in the AL Rookie of the Year balloting in 2017 with 20 home runs and 20 stolen bases. The 26-year-old outfielder is under club control through 2022.

Freddy Peralta for Benintendi is probably a fair trade, actually.

 

Benintendi's bWAR/fWAR has fallen dramatically over the last three years. 4.45 to 1.9 to -0.95 (very small sample size pro-rated over a full season). There have also been reports of the significant drop in timed speed over that same time period. Add in that he is coming off an injury, and I don't think he is all that attractive a candidate. Taking a completely unbiased approach, his average bWAR/fWAR over the last three seasons is 1.8 and if you project him at that going forward, then a Benintendi/Peralta straight up deal would favor the Red Sox but it wouldn't be unreasonable.

 

However, I think a safe project for each player would be to credit Benintendi as being worth 3 WAR total over the next two years (remaining control) and Peralta as being worth 4 WAR total over the next four years and if those are the numbers you go with, then Peralta's surplus value is +22.25 million and Benintendi's surplus value is +11.4 million. Personally I would not do a straight up Benintendi/Peralta swap.

So far it only cost Franchy Cordero to get Benintendi. That would be like the Brewers giving up Ray for him maybe even less than Ray?

Not really interested in spending $6+ million on what would be a fourth outfielder for us. It's debatable whether Benintendi is better than Garcia, but we already have one of the two, so either way we would be paying for both.
