19-year-old Branlyn Jaraba, the Colombia 3rd base prospect who signed for $1,100,000 in July of 2018 and has thus far just the 2019 DSL season that he competed in as a young 17-year-old under his belt, was placed on the 7-day Maryvale injured list.

I don't believe we've seen a 60-day Maryvale IL placement in quite some time, if at all, so the formality of going on the 7-day list often means a long-term absence.

Hopefully not the case here.

That's too bad. It seemed like there was going to be a lot of AZL playing time available to him this year. Hopefully it is just a short-term thing.

More high-level moves before last night’s games:

- LHP Hoby Milner optioned from MLB Milwaukee to Triple-A Nashville.

- RHP Miguel Sanchez selected from Triple-A Nashville to go to The Show.

- RHP Ryan Weber recalled from Triple-A Nashville (where he hadn’t actually pitched yet, since being claimed from Boston).

- OF Derek Fisher designated for assignment by MLB Milwaukee, so could be outrighted to Nashville in the unlikely event that he’s not claimed or traded to another club.

- 3B/1B Gabriel Garcia promoted from High-A Appleton to AA Biloxi, per Appleton’s league transaction page.

- Expecting at least two other moves later today (e.g. 1B/2B Hiura to MLB, C Brent Diaz to AAA). Let’s see…

As folly412 said, C Payton Henry gets the call to AAA Nashville.

- Does this mean Mario Feliciano will still be out for a while?

- Will David Fry now get significant time behind the plate in AA?

Also, Keston Hiura gets his third crack at MLB ball this year.

Lexington Legends (independent Atlantic League) Pitcher Nate Peden Has Contract Purchased by Milwaukee Brewers

Baseball Reference Page

The Brewers braintrust sees something here that the numbers don't necessarily provide.

Congrats to Nate, though. Independent league finds are awesome when they pan out to any degree (see Cousins, Jake).

This June 2020 article provides plenty of background details.

Paden was very young for the Atlantic League that's got plenty of veterans with major league experience. By the way, is anyone ever going to give Caleb Gindl another shot? Last time he saw affiliated ball was 2018. He's raking to the tune of .302/.406/.605 in the Atlantic League so far this year. You'd think with guys hurt all over baseball, somebody would give him a another shot. His major league numbers weren't all that bad.

From earlier this week:

OF Abimael Gonzalez, OF Zane Zurbrugg & INF Odrick Pitre have been released

***

Abimael Gonzalez - Gonzalez just turned 20 last May. 2019 37th round pick out of Puerto Rico, a RH bat, struggled with Maryvale in 2019 and apparently had not shown enough in camp this spring to be assigned a Maryvale spot for 2021

Odrick Pitre turns 21 in August. 2019 35th round pick out of a Texas Community College. Switch-hitter did not fare well in Maryvale in his first pro effort, fanning over 50% of at-bats. Went 0-for-16 in Puerto Rico Winter League action.

Zane Zurbrugg recently turned 24. We had recently linked to this article about Zurbrugg's path back from hamate bone (hand/wrist) surgery. The RH outfielder played in 30 Maryvale games two years ago, stealing nine bases in 12 attempts. Another 2019 draft class member (27th round), a victim of the Brewers already having full outfields at both A-level clubs.

***

Wishing all three draftees well. I imagine money for schooling was included in the various signing deals, so good wishes in baseball and otherwise.

"OF Troy Stokes Jr. and RHP Jandel Gustave have been acquired from Pittsburgh in exchange for C Samuel Escudero and will be assigned to Triple-A Nashville. RHP Zack Godley has been assigned outright to Triple-A Nashville and elected free agency."

Welcome back, Troy!

Who was the poster who absolutely loved Troy Stokes a few years back? Was that Clancy?

Hard to believe that Stokes is still only 25 years old. Seems like he's been kicking around the upper minors forever.

Eight Arizona Complex League players placed on 60-day injured list, presumably for Covid protocols. Other teams commenced their season yesterday, but we’re obviously delayed, hoping to commence this Thursday:

- Herbert Perez, Luis Medina, Jeferson Quero, Kevin Hardin, Luis Silva, Kelvin Bender, Jefferson Figueroa, Jeison Pena

Perez, Medina and Quero - the three players I was looking forward to following the most. Great!

Two more DSL Brewers/Blue Jays co-op team RHP's. Countries of origin not listed yet, age listed but not birth date. Height and weight available.

Anthony Perez

Arielbi Gonzalez

Add 6'0", 175 lb. Leoni De La Cruz to the DSL brigade. Won't ever fret about a southpaw signing at this level, pretty rare.

Keep collecting, next up --

6'1", 175 lb. RHP Jesus Rivero

Latest:

Right-handed hitting 5'10", 160 pound catcher Jason Ollarve

60-day IL for Covid protocols? Seems a bit much.

As per @BrewersPD:

Brewers sign RHP Christian Tripp, a 24-year-old who was the Mets' 13th round pick in 2018 out of the University of New Mexico.

Tripp had been a reliever exclusively until his most recent 2021 independent league tenure (four starts).

Adam Rygg (@BrewerNation) located this recent video of Tripp.

Via Chris Mehring:

Timber Rattlers infielder Yeison Coca to AAA Nashville, where he joins recent Rattler OF Jesus Lujano.

This type of move happens more often in 2021, when the big league Brewers are on the road.

We never will learn the mystery members of the Crew's "taxi squad", and Pablo Reyes is also back on the Brewers 26-man roster. That taxi squad dynamic definitely a factor, as is the news in the next post --
