Brewers sign Pablo Reyes to minor league contract

They're going to need a roster spot for Blaine Hardy very soon too. The inexperience in the pen is a problem. I think they can sneak McKinney through waivers, and even if they don't, they have Taylor ready if an outfielder is needed already on the 40 man.

It’s not inexperience, it’s poor performance. Yardley is 31 years old and has been in the majors with two different clubs. His problem is he doesn’t have “stuff” he’s an arm action hide the ball guy. When he misses his spots and the batter knows he has to throw a strike he’s getting hit.

Same deal with Rasmussen. He’s been behind on nearly every batter he’s faced. He needs to command his pitches simple as that. He missed his spot with Arenado. Sano took him deep on a 3-1 pitch, after he had issued a walk, wild pitch and a 1-1 single.

Very good analysis. I couldn’t agree more although I do like Rasmussen a lot. In his case, it’s typical growing pains. I think he will work it out.

pablo reyes has been optioned to class aaa nashville. he must remain on optional assignment for at least 10 days unless he is replacing a player placed on the injured list or on leave, or if serving as the 27th man of a doubleheader.

Uggh… Reyes is the new Jace Peterson.

I would gladly take a .770 OPS from a utility infielder

I see I didn’t explain that how I meant. I meant since Peterson actually was performing that Reyes has now replaced him as someone I don’t have confidence in and would rather him not be on the big league club.

you have to recognize that since the trade deadline, it's a lot harder to slip versatile players through outright waivers, because waiver claims are the only way to acquire decent talent at this point.

the brewers aren't going to carry tim lopes, mark mathias and pablo reyes on their 40-man in the offseason. one or more will be outrighted by then, if not sooner.

but for now, pablo reyes stays.

Right. And essentially this is why the Escobar trade was so good, it gave us depth for an injury at any spot so a guy like Pablo/Shaw would be one more slot down the list. Granted, its Escobar who is the one hurt as of now (hopefully Adames doesn't need DL) but the idea remains the same. They're still solid with Urias, Adames, Wong. Reyes is there in case of emergency and will play good D if needed. As much as I know Reyes isn't a starter in MLB, as your AAAA utility type guy to play in emergency you could do worse, and he can cover SS too if needed. It kind of just is what it is, you're not going to have a starter level player sitting in AAA all year.

Reyes has been a plus defender at SS/2B this season. Basically replacement level overall. You can do a lot worse.

Doesn't replacement level imply that you can't really do a lot worse because that's what any next man up type guy from AAA should be giving you?

I doubt there is anyone not replacement level to choose from. Thing is, not all replacement level players are replacement level for the same reason. Some can't hit for a lick, some can't field for squat and can't hit enough to compensate for it. Thus the choice is what deficiency is least harmful when used.

There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.
