Filling Out the Roster

I mentioned it earlier this offseason, but it’s worth a mention again. I have no issue with the Brewers taking a step back this season if the payroll is going to be slashed extensively. Get all that dead money from Sogard, Braun, Garza, and Gyorko, get Garcia’s contract off the books, so you have all that extra funds to be spent in 2022. Look to trade Hader for young players with 4+ years of control and/or prospects. Maybe even move someone like Woodruff if someone blows you away with an offer. Also gives time for the collection of arms the Brewers have at AAA to develop and get their feet wet this season. Clearing those 4 players with dead money, Garcia, and Hader would free up ~$25 million.

If we plan to do that, then just tell the fan base that is the deal...

I think this team could be close to something special, but no 1B and no 3B 3 weeks away from spring traing is maddening. I don't view this team as it sits to be in teardown mode, but if that is what they are thinking, then just freaking do it already.

Yelich would be wasted in that scenario, so maybe the smart thing to do is dump him too... I have never been on board with this line of thinking, but geez.

We just have to accept that we will be lucky to play .500 baseball next season. I would rather go for it or sell off but we just have to enjoy the games even if this team is in no mans land; not good enough to contend yet not acquiring young assets for a future run.

Well, that is a positive spin I can get behind. We should never forget that we are lucky to have baseball, even if it is bad baseball. The first part of the 2020 season was painful not having baseball of any kind. Even though 2020 was a boring, horrible season, at least we got to watch some baseball...

Patience is a virtue.

You know something we don’t? I hope so!!!

Just believe in the front office and ownership that they know what they’re doing. I think they’ll continue to figure out ways to compete as well as set us up for down the road.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I guess Indians are shopping Jose Ramirez.

Acquire him and Ill take back everything Ive said this offseason... Absolute great fit on this team!

Yelich, Ramirez, Hiura... OMG.

Don't get your hopes up. He'd cost a mint. In fact, you might have to give up Hiura for him, along with Hader or Burnes/Woodruff. Ramirez is a stud, and the Brewers don't have near the prospects to pull off that type of deal without pulling from the major league club.

Must be nice being Stearns basically getting paid nowadays to do nothing. Attanasio should be ashamed for this organizations lack of moves and if he doesn’t have the financial wherewithal to compete he should just cash out and sell the team to someone who will try to improve the roster.

Think so even if we take on his entire contract? Isnt it like 3 yrs, $30 some mil?

Maybe Im way wrong.

Can somebody crunch the numbers on value. How about Jose Ramirez for Mitchell, Small, Ashby and either Tyrone Taylor or Corey Ray? Are we in the ballpark for value? Brewers also send comp. pick to Cleveland.

That is getting close, but would decimate the top of the Brewers' system, and the Dodgers or Braves could beat it without batting an eye. I bet he ends up with the Braves, probably for a mess of overrated pitching prospects.

Where are you seeing that JRam is being shopped???

In dealing away Lindor & Carrasco the Tribe saved roughly $30M in 2021 salary. In the past week the Tribe has signed Cesar Hernandez & Eddie Rosario to short term deals, cost @$13M of that savings for 2021. Those are moves to remain competitive now (with the young & affordable pitching), not teardown & rebuild. Why spend that money if they are still looking to sell off pieces and reduce cost further???

Ron R/ baumer16 are correct: IF JRam was being shopped the cost in trade assets would be huge. Start with Hiura. Add in Devin Williams & Garret Mitchell. Cleveland might add in Adam Plutko (or whomever is being removed from the 40 man for space).

I dont believe MKE should make that trade (& I wouldnt blame them).

CLE wont deal JRam for less than Fort Know at this point (& again, I wouldnt blame them).

------------------------------

EDIT: For laughs I ran a version of the above trade item thru the Baseball Trade Values simulator & it was "accepted". Looking at the values of the packages I was expecting a rejection.

CLE receives Huira, Williams & Mitchell (84.4 value)

MKE receives JRam & Sam Hentges (LHP) (76.3 value)

Can guarantee Stearns hasn’t done “nothing”. And a reminder may be needed that he can offer the moon to someone. Doesn’t mean that they want to come to Milwaukee. Under Stearns our teams have been Atleast competitive each year. I believe that’ll hold true again this coming year. With 1-2 “bigger” moves yet to be made.

Are we really going to go into next season with pretty much the same team that we ended last year with. Last offseason we all waited and nothing materialized and it looks like this offseason is much the same.

The Brewers made a significant trade last year and signed like 8 free agents.... you can disagree with what they did and point to lackluster results, but stating that they did nothing last year is blatantly false.

Since Stearns & company arrived in 2016 the Brewers have spent the 26th most (413.7 million) on payroll & won the 11th most games (373).

Not having access to the same resources as other teams hasn't prevented them from being competitive. That they've been able to compete while spending so little would actually seem to demonstrate acute financial wherewithal.

By comparison the Cardinals spent 723 million on payroll over those same five years to win 378 games. That extra 310 million bought them five wins.

Everything is contingent upon value. If the value is there (a la the Moose and Grandal signings a couple years ago) then I think Stearns and Attanasio will spend the money to "go for it." However, they aren't going to just say up front "We are going to spend, spend, spend no matter what." Similarly, if the value ISN'T there, I think they are comfortable saving their money for better deals next year--or adding contracts at the trade deadline that might become available. Similarly, maybe they will "tear it down" if they get blown away by an offer for Woodruff/Hiura/etc. But they aren't actively shopping those guys.

This has been Stearns' MO the whole time. Spend money if the value is there and it makes sense, but don't spend recklessly (Turner is not getting a 3+ year contract).

I agree with that. I’ve always felt that the FO just doesn’t want to be locked into contracts with extra years where they are backed into a corner and are hindered from having future flexibility for other acquisitions. Notice that the typical moves don’t limit future flexibility unless they are committed to the player as a cornerstone piece a la Yelich.

There have been some guys like Rosario who they’ve missed on who didn’t require much commitment.

I suspect we do something in the next couple of days. What the move is can be anyone’s guess. For all we know we are building a package with Arcia and other pieces to get Suarez.
