Filling Out the Roster

I think Shaw's three-year numbers are a bit skewed by 2018, considering he is a player who seemingly fell off a cliff starting in 2019.

This is a very fair point. Taking a closer look, while he wasn't a disaster he didn't really bounce back to his "normal" self last year. Interestingly, he actually had better splits against LHP last year too (with the obligatory small sample size caveat):

Might still be a consideration with his defense and the fact he's still only 30. So maybe there's still a comeback year in there for him. Probably not the top choice at this point, but if he can be had on the cheap, could be an interesting possibility still.

While not a total bounce back, I would have no issue bringing Shaw back on a minimum minor league deal to be in the mix at 3B and a backup at 1B. His slash in 2020 of .239/.306/.717 is pretty close to Robertson's career slash in Tampa (.231/.340/.692).

An invite to Spring Training is a no-risk proposition to me.

How about separate trades for Hader and Hiura that would get us a legit 1B and 3B:

Brewers trade Hiura, Mitchell, Small and Medina to Cleveland for Ramirez

Brewers trade Hader to the Mets for Dominic Smith and Thomas Szapucki

Then go sign Paxton or Taijuan Walker to a 2 year, $15 million deal (approx. equivalent to Hader's salary)

That would be amazing. Might want a little more from the Mets, and might need to give up a little more to the Indians (I don't think they're motivated to move Ramirez at all), but I would be very excited for the season to start.

I am not sure the Red Sox would do this but....

Brewers get:

Devers and Seabold

Red Sox get:

Hiura and Houser

The Red Sox are pitching starved right now and Houser would fill in as a good #4 or #5 starter for them. Hiura fits in nicely at Fenway and could be an excellent DH for them.

For the Brewers it solves the 3B issue and brings in another young control pitcher that the Brewers seem to like. Seabold could replace Houser in the rotation as he finished the 2019 season in AA.

Next trade:

Brewers get:

Pavin Smith (1B)

Dbacks get:

Small (LHP)

This gives the Brewers a young 1B in Smith who is currently blocked by Walker and potentially be passed up by Beer.

Probably all long shot trades but I am bored so why not.

No way the Mets even consider a Hader for Smith trade, much less adding another player. The Mets' have been saying Smith will be in the OF if there is no DH. Davis for Hader may be a possibility, but his stock has been raising lately. Cleveland has been quite about trading Ramirez. There would be a huge backlash if they traded him unless somebody really overwhelmed them. I think your package would be about even, but not overwhelming.

Alright my final additions...

Still holding out hope for Turner but if we dont land him, I would love Asdrubal Cabrera at 3B.

And pitching side, add Rich Hill to rotation and possibly a vet like Clippard or Phelps type to bullpen.

Add those guys and definitely ready to battle with Cardinals.

Are there any projections out there for what Paxton is expected to receive?

MLBTR predicted 1/$10M, Fangraphs crowd source predicted 2/$30M. I think he's probably out of our price range given the risk he also carries.

I wouldn't mind Brett Anderson at all. As you say, with better defense his numbers should improve and he was decent enough as a back of the rotation guy already. I liked the bit of personality that came through in the quotes and interviews I saw.

I will predict the Brewers sign lefty Free Agent starter Tyler Anderson as their traditional "out of nowhere" offseason SP signing that ends up pitching like Miley/Lyles in 2021.

There are a few players left on the free agent market who could likely be signed to relatively inexpensive short-term deals to fill holes for this team. Here are a few I like:

1. 3B-INF Marwin Gonzalez - I was interested in him last year, but he ended up going to the Twins. He did not have a good COVID season, but he checks off a lot of potential boxes for the Brewers, as he's a switch hitter with positional versatility. He is going into his age 32 season, so you hope for an offensive rebound. Im guessing he could be had on a one-year deal for roughly $4 million.

2. OF Josh Reddick - As a 4th OFer and pinch hitter, you want a guy that puts the ball in play, and doesn't strike out at a 30+% clip. Reddick is hopefully an upgrade on Ben Gamel that could likely be had for around the same money.

3. SP Jordan Zimmermann - Homer pick. But as a minor league deal flyer, why not bring him in and see if he's got anything left?

Well, Zim is one. Gonzalez and Reddick still make a lot of sense as depth guys.

Well Zimmermann isnt Rich Hill but I guess it's only a minor league deal so maybe we still add Hill.

I really want to find someone to be that #3 behind Woody and Burnes, make me feel much better about Houser, Lindblom/Lauer as our 4 and 5.
