What's bugging you? 2021

I didn't realize Nodakfan17owski was that popular.

Ha! Fortunately, Mrs. Nodakfan’s maiden name is equally ridiculous, so she had few reservations about taking my last name. We purposely gave our son a middle name (‘Taylor’) that could function as a last name in case he ever wanted to adopt a DBA name.

We are a proud people, but not that proud. :)

When you got married you didn't hyphenate last names? ;) I had a substitute teacher in grade school (last millennia) who was Mr. Kookenen-Flashberger. I never understood why they didn't just pick "Smith" or something...

I recently hyphenated my last name, it's almost as big of a mouthful as Kookenen-Flashberger. 17 letters. I consider it to be a formality, nobody ever needs to read or pronounce the whole thing. Thanks to autofill I don't even have to type it. It's easy to shorten it or use the initials. The main reason for doing it was to make it easier to travel internationally with a child. You don't want to have your child have a different last name than the parents.

Interestingly, after I hyphenated and had a baby I started getting targeted ads for women's clothing on Instagram. A good example of how systematic bias sneaks into AI algorithms...

I saw an announcement once for a "Butts-McCracken" wedding.

I'm guessing they didn't hyphenate.

[sarcasm]They’d probably take a lot of crap for that.[/sarcasm]

A perfect example to pick Rockafeller instead of either name or the hyphen. :laughing

You will almost exclusively see that among females, and the reason is because they think it will make it harder for people to find and stalk them online. Whether or not it really does, I don't know, but that is the stated reason.

I see the same pattern with members of the media, both male and female.

I was 18 (in the 1980s) when I decided that if I ever married, I would keep my surname. That was maybe 20% because I was dating someone with a longish ending-in-ski name, but mostly because I like the name I was given at birth.

[sarcasm]As a person with a Polish last name I resent that you don't like the longish ending-in-ski name! And this is now bugging me.[/sarcasm]

Haha, I didn't like how that particular surname rolled with Laura. Plus that was only like 20% of my rationale. I really like my birth name.

In case it makes you feel any less salty...one of the brothers in that family did marry someone named Laura, so there is someone out there with that first and last name. :laughing

I thought they'd shot three different endings to HIMYM so that nobody involved could spoil the ending because they didn't know which would be chosen. I also recall reading that the writers just didn't want to write the cookie-cutter ending that folks were expecting because it would have been less fun to write and they wanted to be more creative and different.

I was less upset with the Ted ending as I was the Barney ending. We spent years watching him very slowly grow out of the womanizing/objectifying character and rooting for that (or at least I did) and then they had him completely reverting back to his old self in a flash. Like if Clockwork Orange suddenly added a 22nd chapter where he suddenly turns bad again.

Yup, they spent a couple seasons on how Barney was maturing and a full season on a wedding they threw out part way into the last episode. Like they were just wasting treading water for a couple seasons.

Fan is short for fanatic.

I blame Wang.

On my office IM platform, ‘(k)’ is a hot key for a kissing emoji.

I work in financial services, so it’s not uncommon for us to use ‘401(k)’ in a discussion. I’ve (virtually) kissed more colleagues than I can count.

Imagine have your significant other walking by as you accidently send someone a kissing emoji.

The horrible family vlog crap my wife watches. Some of them are at least minimally interesting but most are incredibly irritating people trying to make their normal, mundane lives seem interesting. By far the worst is the East Family, "Former NFL Player" Andrew East and his wife olympic gymnast Shawn Johnson. Usually my wife watches these before bed so I have to hear it while I'm trying to read a book. Sorry East's, I don't give a crap about your fast food chicken sandwich taste test or your real estate advice.

What probably bothers me more is that enough people watch this crap that these people can solely live off the money they make from their videos. Good for them for taking advantage of capitalism but come on consumers, this stuff is stupid.

Reading your description of this vlog makes me never want to watch this. Ever. Thank you.

Meh, at least it keeps her away from the royal family stuff. Don't get me started on that.

My 5 year old likes watching crap like this, except geared towards kids. Mind numbingly stupid. I never thought I would beg for just some mickey mouse clubhouse.

Well, if Shawn Johnson was a male and played football, she would be a millionaire many times over. So if this is the avenue available to her to cash in on her success, so be it.

Apparently when you empty your computer's recycle bin, everything else on the computer gets deleted, too. Well, lesson learned for next time.

I think maybe that is not quite accurate.

I'm guessing you have something messed up in your settings.

She has a net worth of $9mil and I am sure that has nothing to do with her YouTube channel.

They definitely make some decent money with the views they get, but not as much as you would think.

A million YouTube subscribers equates to about $60k a year, of course this fluctuates because one giant video can make a lot of money but the $9mm is definitely not from YT. She had a lot of endorsements. If you win a gold with the women's gymnastics team, you're set as long as you don't destroy your image before you cash in.

YouTubers don't only make money with views, many of them have Patreon accounts where viewers can pledge from $1 to $100 (or more) per month to support their favorite content creators, this is generally tied to some form of reward and/or exclusive bonus content. They also often have sponsors for their videos and run their own in video endorsement ad for each video's sponsor, this would be separate from the usual ads that YouTube attaches to videos.

Well, yeah, but the subscribers are how you get the sponsors. I have a few one-million view videos on YT and have never been approached for a sponsorship. Sponsors want followers, it's a consistent audience. A couple one-off hits in a sea of 5k-view videos doesn't bring in any real money. I know from experience.

Yes that's true, I'm referencing those that do YouTube for a living and it sounds like that's what the East/Johnson & family are doing. I'm assuming they probably upload videos at least once a week, possibly more. Regular uploads that "only" get 40k to 50k views can be just as valuable as the million view one hit wonders, if not more so because those regular uploads attract a repeat audience. It wouldn't shock me if the East/Johnson family gets 100k views or more on their videos (I have no idea I've never seen any of them).

I was married in 2014. Even without a pandemic I just cannot imagine navigating that today. The countless apps, the games played on said apps. I have lots of dating friends and the stories and things that are now expected or normal just sound nauseating. I just missed the tinder era by literally a few months. Rejecting people on a 1 second glance at a photo and then texting back and forth before meeting...no thanks. I was reading a thread somewhere where one of the guys insisted and calling rather than texting and the replies acted like this person was mentally ill for not wanting to text.
