I can only hope there was kraut presented as an option to at least try and give them a true taste of how brats should work!

Beer-simmered onions and Silver Spring's Beer 'n Brat mustard.

On a hot-dog bun - no wasting room in your stomach on those big, dry buns.

Of course there was kraut for the brats! Also both cooked and raw onion, as well as both dijon and whole-seed mustard. I didn't even offer ketchup. I wanted to make sure their first impression of brats was done correctly.

Only thing I didn't do was use beer for the boil. I know the alcohol boils off, but I brought in bourbon barbecue sauce for some pulled pork once and the boss didn't say anything but was clearly nervous about it. There's a zero-tolerance policy at work.

Also, I highly recommend Chinese cabbage for kraut instead of the regular variety, at least if you like a particularly crunchy kraut. And apparently it's a Russian thing to ferment it with cranberries instead of caraway.

Chili on brats? Yeeeeeech.

My wife liked to put grape jelly on brats before we met. I put an end to that and have never actually seen her put grape jelly on one.

My wife puts grape jelly on grilled cheese... She now has my Mom doing it.

gross.

Interesting. My mom made homemade kraut and I've eaten authentic German kraut (in Munich), but I've never cared for it. This actually sounds pretty interesting...

My thoughts....Never liked sauerkraut or mustard, and raw onions should never be served as they ruin food. Only thing I’ve ever put on a brat is ketchup or secret stadium sauce.

I do ketchup as well. Mustard just never sits well with me and I cannot do sauerkraut.

Speaking of brats, I recently bought IPA brats from the store because they were on sale...I think they were SmithFoods or something. I hate IPA beer, but it gave the brat a really unique flavor.

I prefer to go to a butcher that does fresh brats. I like the fillings they put in them and fresh always seems to taste better. My personal favorite I recently tried, blue cheese and onion. Not a huge blue cheese or opinion fan, but it was amazing.

Brats/dogs: Ketchup and yellow mustard mostly, raw onion and/or sauerkraut if available.

Burgers: Ketchup, yellow mustard, raw onion; pickles on the side. I don't generally go for tomatoes on burgers, if a burger comes with tomato that's fine but a fresh, sliced garden tomato is a real treat.

Over the past year or I’ve taken to just mustard, stadium sauce and raw onions with my brat. Big pile of kraut on the side I eat with a fork. Agree heartily with getting fresh butcher brats.

Sometimes when I have particularly good brats like that I have them on mashed potatoes with a couple big slices of char grilled onions and skip the condiments altogether.

I've experimented with a currywurst sauce that's really good. Just heat up some ketchup and stir in some curry powder to taste.

I take my extra brats and make my own version of the bratchos. I slice em and put them on the chips and melt cheese over them so they stick to the chip, then ill put on the salsa/veggies/melted cheese. Though recently I have been cutting breads and just eat the brats plain.

Random thought: my mouth is watering

I had brats maybe 2-3 days ago, now I want to go buy them again to test out all these different ways to eat them....for science of course. I will take on for the team.

extra brats get chopped up, browned in the pan and then made into omlette's for me.

hot dog - BBQ sauce, diced onion, shredded cheddar, bacon bits.

An easy version of a "St. Louis" dog.

Also, if you go to Iceland you have to get a hot dog. They make em out of lamb.

I'm a sucker for an Italian Sausage. So good!

I put coleslaw on my brats.

Slaw is an underrated addition for a lot of things. Pulled pork, chicken, even on burgers.

For dogs I'm a sucker for a chili cheese dog. Otherwise it's just katschup, mustard, and relish for me.

Currywurst in Germany is awesome - my favorite go to food when I'm over there (two former jobs had me working in Germany at times fortunately - unfortunately, my current one does not).

I had two co-workers from the states once and we stopped at a stand. They ordered brats (which are very different than US brats, but still very good) and I ordered currywurst. After the brats, they each had a currywurst and they were hooked.

Now my mouth is watering...

Yeah my wife turned me on to it after she took a trip to Berlin. After WWII, Germans got ketchup from the Americans and curry from the British and made a dish out of it.
