Bucks 2020-2021 season thread

I said Ewing was adept at fade-away jump shots; not 3ptrs or dribbling in general. Ironically, the fade-away is a common post-up move that you want Giannis to do more of.

Giannis is obviously MUCH more athletic and a better ball handler than Ewing or Shaq. I don't see any issues with Giannis bringing the ball up the court from a skillset point of view. He isn't turning it over, he is capable of pressing his defender... whether or not this is the best way to start our offense is a different question. But his has the skill to handle it. Shaq or Ewing even trying that would've been laughable.

Durant is certainly a much better shooter; no doubt. But for the typeof player, they are similar. Same with Garnett.

I don't want Giannis chuck 3s like Harding or Curry. And certainly probably needs to lay off in the playoffs. But his shot is still improving. It is, IMO, a necessary evil to complement his driving ability; just so he keeps it at logical times and number of attempts. This year he averaged just over 1.0 per game, which isn't too much. But I agree he has launched it at some questionable times.

One thing that still amazes me is that Giannis is only 26 this year. I forget how young he is and how much growth potential he still has.

I admire the optimism that Budd is going to figure out how to make adjustments in the next 2 games after not figuring it out in the playoffs for several years now or that the Bucks aren't going to let us down like Wisconsin sports teams have been doing for 10+ years and counting.

Hope springs eternal.

Logically, we all know he's not going to change. Optimistically, as a fan, I choose to at least hope that individual players (Giannis, Jrue), will, in the heat of the moment, not take 22.5 seconds off the clock and then take an off balance contested jumper without making a single pass during an entire offensive set with the game on the line.

Logically, I know that's what's going to happen, and it's practically by design, but optimistically, I hope that's not what happens. I know that the Bucks have the ability to make that not happen, and as a fan, I have to hope it does, but we'll see, I guess.

I guess something is bound to change at some point with either the Bucks or someone and hopefully all the disappointment that we've suffered along the way will make it all the more rewarding.

The most depressing part is that there just isn't anywhere for the Bucks to go from here. There is no logical way they get Lillard or something. There is no reinforcement coming. The only hope you have is that they fire the coach and someone else makes a difference, but I am just not sure that's a realistic outcome. They're married to what they have and it feels like it would have been good enough about 15 years ago, but not anymore when stars collude to play together.

Can't even use that excuse this season though. They had their golden chance and blew it.

The thing is, the roster is good enough. Even with the Nets having three superstars, we could have (and should have) won this series. Maybe they still can, but that's obviously doubtful.

With a coach with a shred, just a SHRED of creativity and thoughtfulness and most of all, willingness to adjust and think outside the box and be willing to adjust his team's identity when necessary, this series would be heading towards a completely different outcome. I'm not taking the blame away from Giannis and his untimely blunders, but the offense is the way it is, by design, by Bud's design.

He has a plan, and he absolutely refuses to adjust. We've seen it time and again. And again, and again, and again.

I'm convinced that with just about ANY coach, this team has the talent to win it all, IF coached properly. It just needs to adjust and play to their strengths and more importantly, against opponents weaknesses. Teams adjust their own identities to take advantage of what the Bucks don't do well, but we don't EVER do the same in return. Why? That's coaching. It's gut check time for the leadership of the franchise. The window is still open, but it's getting pretty narrow. This playoff series has to have shown what they must have already known about Budenholzer. It's time to make a change.

I still wish they had found a way to get Bradley Beal instead of Jrue, but it is what it is. I agree what they got is what they got. There's no more building a team around Giannis. It's been built. They can play around with the bench but not much else.

They'll fire Budd, maybe it'll help, maybe not. I still think there's a better than 50% chance that Giannis gets traded in the next 2 seasons.

I've liked Holiday. He's fallen into the same trap of occasionally doing the ISO thing, but overall I like what he brings to the table. He can shoot and knows when to attack the basket. I don't know if the Bucks need another 30ppg ability guy or just a scheme that is better at bringing out the best in them. The latter is really their only way out of this, so the former doesn't matter too much. I dunno if I preferred Beal. Probably. But I think they'd still be where they are.

Just about any coach. Not J-Kidd.

I've never really thought that coaching matters much in the NBA. Maybe it does but it just seems like whoever has the best player(s), wins. And they basically do what they want out there.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

In the regular season it really doesn't matter. Talent wins out most of the time and a random BF.net poster could coach this Bucks roster to 50 wins in an 82 game season.

In the last few rounds of the playoffs, the margin of difference in talent between rosters is much thinner and things like team chemistry and schemes start to matter much more.

Phil Jackson often equated a good coach with the value of a team’s 4th best starter. They are going to help win a few games, but they don’t have the same impact as All-NBA guys.

At least we don't root for the Sixers.

I know you only show up after losses to complain about the 3P defense, but going 7/8 from 3 is absurd, and the last 3 durant made was an off balance circus shot with Middleton right in his face at the shot clock.

Stuff happens. If you predict that Green (or anyone) will go 7/8 again in support of Durant, I'd take the under 99 times out of 100

Focus more on the context of thread than my behavior (i.e. when I come, etc.). We've both been here for nearly 20 years and yet as a moderator, your posts continue to be piss-poor example of the standards. The same context can be made without worrying about my post activity and finding a trend. I don't need to predict anyone will go 7/8, but when you have a 17 pt lead, there is one quick way for the opponent to get back in the game and the Bucks just can't defend that one thing. Can't really isn't the problem. They have no desire to. Their leadership has no desire to. Just, "aww shucks, I guess they hit another open one again" "rats, good game guys".

I'm pretty certain he was 6/6 and they were still down quite a bit. It's an odd take to focus on the 3 pt defense to me when anyone watching that game could see the Bucks had absolutely no offensive strategy whatsoever in the 4th quarter. It was literally stand around with ball, dribble for 16 seconds, shoot at end of clock without a pass. I wanted to throw a shoe at the TV.

I think coaching matters a bit more when you are trotting out a roster like the Bucks have. If you have Harden/Irving/Durant? Yah, the players kind of just do their own things. However, the Bucks talent is much more spread throughout the guys on the roster....and the top dog (Giannis) isn't the brightest ballplayer. Good coaching seems necessary to help those guys maximize their talent come playoff time.

Miami wouldn't have gotten near as far last year without great coaching. Or Atlanta this year. Understandable since we all come from the baseball world to think that coaching doesn't matter. Two games ago the Bucks were getting a lot of high-percentage looks from 3 and that doesn't just happen.

The problem for the bucks in the playoffs the past few years has consistently been the fact they don't have a guy on the roster capable of going off offensively when opposing defenses make life difficult for Giannis and Middleton. Jrue gets his, but he's not a streaky scorer and that isn't his role.

Losing Divincenzo really hurts them in that regard this postseason. Hes not the ideal volume perimeter scorer, but nobody else on this roster is a better option in that role right now. They just don't have enough perimeter creators on the roster who can hurt a defense off the dribble. Doesn't help that the bucks can't play good pick and roll or pop offense because that isn't Giannis' game at all offensively.

The problem for the Bucks this playoff has simply been playing stupid basketball. There is no reason they should have lost this series. None. They refuse to exploit Mike James defending Lopez, Giannis has his back to the basket on players 6 inches shorter than he is. And then there is the 4th quarter 1 on 5 offense.

I just can't buy any argument about the Bucks having a roster problem after watching this series. Against the full strength Nets, sure, but that's the problem for almost any team and the Nets were basically never full strength this year.

The Bucks could have and should have won this series. They still could, but it should have been easier. They did "their thing" and refused to play matchups. They can't adjust.
