Reds Trade Candidates

Eye Black

Reports of the Reds shopping Sonny Gray and now Eugenio Suarez seem to be gaining steam. There is a report they are also listening on Luis Castillo, but as far as them trading him I would categorize it under, "I'll believe it when I see it".

I know trading within the division is tricky, but Suarez or Gray would add a big boost for the Brewers, especially Suarez.

Eugenio Suarez is under contract for 4 more years at around $11 million per year (with a team option for 2025). If the Reds would be willing to engage the Brewers on him, Suarez might be the perfect fit for the Brewers in terms of current need. If the Reds are solely focused on getting back major league ready talent than the Brewers probably don’t have what it takes to make a match with the Reds on Suarez. The Brewers probably have enough talent at the very top of their farm system to match Suarez’s trade value, but it would likely require one of their best two prospects (Turang or Mitchell) being included.

He would be perfect, but I'm not sure the Brewers have the prospect depth or the budget to add him. He's on a very team friendly contract at around $11M per thru 2024 plus a option for $15M in 2025. For his production, that is very reasonable.

If they do have the budget, I think Turang, Henry, and Andrews might work. The trade simulator aligns FWIW. Suarez has a 23.4 value and the prospects are 23.3. Not sure the Brewers can afford to give up that much.

I think the Brewers would have to likely "overpay" in terms of what the Baseball Trade Value site currently lists. I think Turang or Mitchell would be a must, and then probably the second prospect among the Brewers next tier down. One other commodity piece the Brewers have to deal is the comp round A draft pick.

Via Jon Heyman this morning:

Luis Castillo as well as Sonny Gray is being discussed in trades. Asks are appropriately high for young frontline starters. The Reds went for it last winter (and were rewarded with a playoff spot) but the belt tightening this winter is clear.

I assume his young frontline starter remark was directed at Castillo since Gray at 31 years old wouldn’t exactly be considered “young” by baseball standards. Even Castillo is 28 years old which isn’t old, but is probably bordering on passing the “young” threshold.

Prior to last year, I considered Suarez to be the premier right handed slugger in the NL right up there with Alonso, and despite struggling last year he still had 15 HR. Strikeouts are an issue but this is one guy I hated having up there with the game on the line. Brewers as division rivals would have to overpay though.

What the heck are the Reds doing? They finally put together a strong starting rotation after all these years and now they want to break it up? They’re already going to lose Bauer.

Their offense sucks and they're losing Bauer and they weren't good last year. Kind of makes sense to sell high on some of these guys.

Add Castillo to their possible trade list... The 2020 season really put a damper on all the moves they made last off season. Bauer, Gray and Castillo are possibly the best 1-3 in MLB.

Jon Heyman of MLB Network reports that, in addition to Sonny Gray, the Reds have also discussed Luis Castillo with teams in potential trades.

The Reds were one of the more aggressive teams last offseason, but Heyman says of the club that "the belt tightening this winter is clear." Castillo is eligible for arbitration for the first time this offseason, so he will be getting more expensive. That said, the 28-year-old is under team control through 2023 and is one of the better starters in the National League, so the ask for him is "appropriately high," per Heyman. Out of Gray and Castillo, Gray would seem to be the much likelier pitcher to be dealt.

Suarez would be nice. I wouldn’t include Mitchell. Turang is a nice prospect but I’m ok with dealing him because we have Garcia. Mitchell is a stud athlete and very promising as our CF of the future.

That contract is big but probably commensurate with his production. It would free up third for Moose and open up salary. Maybe since Williams left their front office they are pivoting.

He would give us nice middle of the order production.
