GIANNIS SIGNS EXTENSION!!

HiAndTight
Supermax has only been since 2017. Before that it was the Larry Bird rights...or something like that.

The Bird rule is just an exception to allow a team to go over the salary cap to sign their own players. It didn't provide any added incentive to get a player to stay and that's been around since Bird. I think that's been in place since he signed his second contract in the early 80's...

I know this is probably in the Bucks thread, but the most important player in franchise history CHOOSING to stick around through his 20's and play for the Bucks when most other superstars his age in small markets have opted to leave....is worthy of it's own thread(IMO).

I also thought it was always a formality, and he's not turning down the $38MM. Yes, he could get more in endorsements elsewhere, but he already has a big shoe deal, and there's no way he gets close to $38MM more in shoes playing in NY. The international market is massive, and people in China or Germany really don't care if a star plays for the Bucks or Nets or Heat.

My former co-worker is a Serbian immigrant and she is hounded by her family and old neighbors for Giannis jerseys, and not the replicas.

I don't understand the hatred for players building a "superteam" to win a title. Isn't that what we want out of our athletes, to win? Unless they're cheating why does it matter how they do it? It's a lot better than when in MLB when the top free agents sign a ridiculously huge contract with a crap team after talking about how much they want to play for a winner.

Because it's collusion. And it goes against being a fan, that wanting your team a fair shot at winning a title in a given year.

Duncan, no? Not only did we land a generational talent in the draft, but we also landed the rare superstar who is loyal to his team and not swayed by the bright lights on NY or LA. The odds on that are amazingly small. While the Bucks will never be the Packers in the state of WI, this has to be one of the most unique and rare events that we will see in, I don't know, our lifetimes? Am I exaggerating here- in the moment I don't think so.

Maybe if it wasn't a supermax...I don't think it was a formality he would sign, but about as close as it can get. A super max basically lets you outbid the competition by a huge margin...you would have to be running one heck of a garbage organization for any player to pass it up. Years down the road it will be interesting to see how many players (if any) actually decline such a deal. The rare event in all this is them originally drafting him...the contract not so much.

I would bet on us drafting another Giannis before I die before we trade for another Yelich, wins MVP instantly, 2nd place next year, and then sign a massive contract to stay in baseballs smallest market for essentially the rest of his career.

I remember writing that and meaning to say since Kareem, but you're obviously right. In any event, I think he's got a chance to be a more important player now. He's sticking around when Kareem bolted after winning one. I get why he did it and just as I wouldn't have blamed Giannis, hard to blame Kareem(especially since it was before I was born).

Several players have passed on the SuperMax. Anthony Davis just did so. LeBron...KD, Kawhi. Pretty much all the top players in the league from small-market teams. I think you'll see the same thing in the future.

Giannis is the first true franchise player to sign one in a small market as far as I can tell. Steph signed one, but it was his 4th contract and he's in a big market...even if it's not technically true, the area, Oakland, SF...

I really don't think the money was the reason Giannis signed. He's coming off a 100 million dollar deal. His shoe deal was worth more than that. And how much did he really cost himself? 25 million or so. I don't know what the exact number is, but it's a small enough number he could have easily made it up in a larger market.

LeBron and KD didn't pass on it, fyi. The Supermax was put in after KD left basically as an attempt to combat players leaving. Supermax started in 2017, Steph was the first player to ever sign it.

This is HUGE for the Bucks. Hopefully this will entice others to play for Milwaukee knowing that Giannis is here to stay long term. I am absolutely pumped by this news!! Now to lock up Holiday on a 4 or 5 year deal, buy some second round picks the next few years hoping to find some positive contributors off the bench, and bring a Championship back to Milwaukee! :)

They both passed on SuperMax offers. LeBron has spent two seasons with the Cavs and obviously this is KD's first with Brooklyn. They both passed up Supermax contracts in the past two years.

So if Giannis recruits a few of his really, really good basketball player friends to come play for the Bucks and they win a title together you wouldn't like it because it wasn't fair to the rest of the league?
