Jimmy Nelson News

TURBO

Damn it, I would love to have brought him back on a deal like that...

Dodgers signed RHP Jimmy Nelson to a minor league contract with an invitation to spring training.

The Dodgers declined their $2 million option on Nelson following the 2020 season. The right-hander missed the entire shortened season after undergoing surgery on his lower back in early July. Bringing him back makes a ton of sense for the Dodgers as a low-risk, potentially high-upside move if he's able to regain his health.

I had been quietly hoping we would. I wouldn’t be shocked if he’s still got some good mlb moments in him. Plus he’s such a fun guy to root for.

He really is. Even as a Dodger, I'm still hoping he figures it out. Really sucks to think how close we came to having a homegrown rotation with 3 potential TOR starters. Roll out Nelson, Burnes, and Woody with Hader, Williams, Rassmussen and a number of other young arms and the narrative about the Brewers' ability to develop pitching really starts to change.

Either way, at the very least, with guys like Ashby and Small, the Brewers are certainly trending in the right direction. Now...they just need to get back to developing some bats.

...and holding on to Ashby and Small. I fear that one or two of these guys might possibly be on the move for bats...

Please no.

I think that's quite possible. Getting a Crawford to add to depth at higher minor leagues might be a sign they could be using Small and/or Ashby as bait for bats. That and they protected File and Bettinger from the Rule 5. Those are nice arms, but both move up on the pecking order if Small or Ashby go in a trade which made keeping them more of a priority.

There is a current article in BrewCrewBall about Luke Voit as a trade target for the Brewers in exchange for Corey Ray and Aaron Ashby. Is there any merit to the thought it could happen? Probably not but that would be a scenario where you use Crawford as depth and aquire a bat, like John Briggs mentioned above.

I believe the Yankees would want quite a bit more than Ray and Ashby for Voit. Probably a catcher like Feliciano or someone along those lines.
