David Dahl

Disclaimer - I have always been a fan of David Dahl. That being said, he seems like he would be a nice fit with our current roster. I know he struggled last season, but the season before he was an All-Star. At minimum, I think he would be a significant upgrade over Gamel in the 4th OF spot. He would be a good complement to Cain and Garcia as a LH bat. Defensively he can play any OF position, and could step in as a potential quality starter in case of injury or if Cain or Garcia struggle to get it going offensively this season. I know his home and away splits weren’t great in Colorado, but I think his bat would still play well at Miller Park. One thing I’m unsure of is how much he would command on a free agent contract. Maybe someone else would have a better idea on that. Thoughts?

Trade away Garcia first and then you can even approach him to a contract.

I do wonder what the plan will be for Garcia. Obviously, the salary is way higher than it would otherwise be if he was a free agent, but I do wonder if you could get a team to take him while retaining a chunk of what's left. Freeing up time for a better potential option (like Dahl) would be the major side effect.

As a Free Agent, David Dahl should want nothing to do with Milwaukee's OF and playing time. Trade away Garcia first and then you can even approach him to a contract.

You’re probably right. I’m sure he would want assurances that he would be starting before even considering signing with the Brewers.

Coming off nearly his worst batting season while being paid the most he's going to make in a season? I think what Milw would have to pay a team to take him is more than what Milw will spend on a FA this season. Maybe throw in Garret Mitchell and you only have to pay Garcia's Buyout then. Do all that and intend to sign Dahl who during this hypothetical fiasco, has now signed with a team already before Milw has even initiated talks.

Dahl will be coveted. He sounds like a great Mets sign.

Maybe the metrics underrate Dahl, but according to both f and br versions of WAR, Garcia has been better three of the last four years, including last year. I agree that Dahl will probably go with a prove it deal for a team with an open outfield spot, but I don’t know if he will be in that big of demand after the injury issues and last year’s disaster.

I can't imagine Garcia is on a long leash. If he's hitting .220 with 2 HR on June 1st, he'll either be gone or benched. The Brewers need to find another OF unless Braun gives some indication he'll be back, If Dahl or any of the other outfielders out there have any confidence in their ability, I don't think they'd be scared to compete with Garcia. Add to that we don't what we'll get from Cain after he essentially sat out an entire year.

There's a number of LH hitting outfielders out there who could be picked up and dislodge Garcia if they swung the bat like they've shown in the past. Most had equally bad years in 2020 but that's the reason they are out there. Dahl is one of them. Nomar Mazara is another. Heck so is Gamel

Dahl just cannot stay healthy. He might be ok with a platoon situation.
