Marquette Basketball Thread 20-21

patrickgpe
I think people under-rate how tough the Big East conference is. Marquette dominated UNC at UNC and UNC is 10-6 in the ACC and 10-1 at home this year; yes, Marquette was their only home loss. Marquette's two non-conference losses were to #12 Oklahoma State (who just beat #6 WVU without OSU's best player and possible #1 overall draft pick) and to UCLA (17-8 overall, 13-6 in conference; Lunardi has them as a 10-seed).

Marquette's strength of schedule is somewhere between #29 and #34 in the country. Wisconsin is between #6 and #11 (and all of the top 6 are Big Ten schools). ESPN has 12 Big Ten teams amonng the top 13 in SOS.

Not really under-rating their season it is just that majority of the time a team like Marquette is going to be not included in the tournament because of their under .500 record. They have some impressive wins on the road at UNC and at home against WI. They also beat Creighton on the road which consists of their 2nd ranked team win. I believe Creighton was in the top 10 when they beat them and WI was ranked in the top 5 at the time I think?

They have a nice resume with the three wins against Creighton, WI and UNC but I think they had to win at least one game in the Big East conference tournament to get in.

Really great win over Creighton in Omaha. This team is the most fun to watch in years, very balanced and good chemistry.

This didn't age well. Only a few weeks later, I had complete apathy toward the team again.

Wojo really needs to go. No success and largely uninteresting play style. But between the administration's indifferencce and the budget issues I'd be surprised if they buy him out, much less hire a worthy successor.

They had one route to get in the big dance and that involved winning the conference tournament. I say next year we stop worrying about the 2nd best mid major in Milwaukee and all jump on board the UWM bandwagon once they land Patrick Baldwin Jr!

as coaches are getting the axe today, Marquette has held firm. I didn't realize that he signed a 5 year extension at the end of the '19 season. Unless the boosters are going to put up money to get him out, I think Wojo isn't going anywhere. (this is what happened in Indiana, per reports out today)

missed the news that Dwayne Kilings is leaving to be Albany's head coach yesterday. A big blow to the program after loosing Stan Johnson last year. I think he really helped recruiting.

Symir Torrence also transferring after loosing his spot in the rotation to Carton.

I don’t know if Brian Wardle is the answer for Marquette, but I have a high opinion of him. He’s the only coach to lead UWGB to a Horizon League title in the last 25 years.

I see someone already vandalized Wojo’s Wikipedia page:

‘On March 19, 2021 it was announced that Wojciechowski was parting ways with Marquette due to a 7 year collapse in February and March.’ :)

Wardle did run into some issues at Bradley / UW-GB with how he treated his players. I do think he would be a favorite.

Think Marquette would look at Archie Miller?

I liked TJ Otzelberger, but looks like he is going to Iowa State.

Wardle was pretty much vindicated by an outside attorney who was hired to investigate the alleged mistreatment of players at UWGB. The two complaints the university received were from helicopter parents who thought he was being too hard on their kids. Wardle’s core players vouched for him and the end result was Wardle meeting with a personality coach to discuss how to better motivate his team. His best years at UWGB came after that investigation.

thanks I didn't follow the situation that closely just knew of complaints. I do think Miller and Wardle are my 2 early favorites.

No problem ... As mentioned previously, I thought his 5-year tenure in Green Bay was very successful. He left on good terms for a big pay bump at Bradley.

If I’m being objective, however, he might have an issue with the media. He famously burned a bridge with a local newspaper reporter, Rob Demovsky (who now works for ESPN covering the Packers). Wardle felt Demovsky’s coverage of the mistreatment allegations was unfair. Demovsky claimed he tried to get Wardle’s side, but Wardle was bound by a gag order while the investigation was ongoing (which is true). Wardle cut off Demovsky’s access to the program, which was pretty much essential for a local newspaper reporter. I didn’t think much of it because the whole thing seemed overblown, but Wardle was accused of a similar media issue at Bradley:

I assumed Archie Miller becoming available is what triggered Marquette to make a move. I'll be shocked if anyone else gets the job. Didn't Marquette try to land Miller back in 2014?

I think Archie Miller would be a good hire.

At 37:00, some insight from Jeff Goodman, who is well connected.

tl;dl:

-Two NCAA appearances and no wins in seven years is unacceptable given the resources there

-Wojo was told he needed to change staff, bring in veteran coach and refused

Candidates:

-Porter Moser supposedly wants the job

-Shaka Smart not thrilled his buyout was only reason he wasn't ousted last year, loses a lot next year. A lot of discussion on how sources reported him hired last time

-John Beilein in mix but administration may not be comfortable with him

-Pat Kelsey has midwest ties, makes a lot of sense
