Wisconsin vs Northwestern game thread

It is interesting too because I feel like we have seen them go for it on 4th and 1 or 2 more often, but once its 4th and 3 that seems like a no go for certain.

And he goes for it on 4th down in some unusually aggressive spots and not the obvious ones. I think there was one time against NW that he went for it on 4th and 1 on UW's own 45 or something like that. Then didn't go for it on 4th down on the opponents 36.

Yes! I was shocked when they didn't go for it on 4th and 3 or whatever it was from the 36. Even a good punt is only going to net 25ish yards. That can be made up in 1 above average play.

Another positive from the game was Jalen Berger. Hard not to be excited about him.

Yes but he needs to hit the weight room which hopefully will be the case. Nakia Watson could not be more disappointing to me this season.

Watson looks like he runs upright too much, but thats just my observation. On Berger, I wont claim to know his BMI by looking at him. ;)

And then went for a 4th and 6 later in the game while in FG range. It was debatable since they needed a TD to tie. But 4th and 6th isn't the same as 4th and 1-3. You needed two scores to win the game, assuming the K was healthy should've took the points and got that positive on the board after struggling so long. NW got the ball after they failed and got one or two good plays and the FG for the two score lead. Whole sequence of events changes if he takes the points.

I couldn't believe he didn't go for the 4th down inside the 40 after earlier going for one on the wrong side of the 50.

4th and short inside your opponent's 45 is a go for it almost every time, except in certain rare situations where you have reason to deviate from it. It should be the norm to go in these situations, not the exception. Most NFL coaches have figured this out, it is disappointing that Chryst has not.

Yep. Pretty sure he did that in the Rose Bowl last year too. Or at least he punted late on 4th and short and I said to myself "No way we get the ball back".

The way their defense was playing, you can't fault him for trusting the defense. The defense may have had a better chance of getting better field position than the offense.

Maybe, but they needed a score. Now, if you want to argue the d had a better chance to score...

Yah, you can definitely fault him. What happened after is golden example of why it made no sense.

They got NW to go 3 and out in a 1:06! Fantastic! Problem is you are back to the same garbage field position.

The Badgers then took 2:43 to score nothing.

Game is over. Of course let’s just pretend they got the 4th down conversion...how much longer would it have taken to find the end zone? There was barely 2 minutes on the clock and we still had 30 yards to go. I’m guessing best case we would have had 40 seconds or so to kick an onside kick, recover, and gain a ton of yards just so our terrible kicker could maybe tie the game.

They didn’t have time to punt the ball and have NW go 3 and out in a minute. They need every single second for their offense to score 10 points.
