Non-Tender Candidates

Eye Black
From Jon Morosi regarding David Dahl getting a change of scenery (Link):

With Dahl, health is obviously an issue. When he's on the field, though, he's a dynamic player. He's intriguing to me. Playing the outfield at Coors is one of the more rigorous jobs in baseball, which is a bad fit for a player who's had trouble staying healthy. Put Dahl in an easier travel/altitude situation, and he could thrive.

Might be a little risky, but I wonder if we could look to give him a multi year deal. He will be turning 27 at the beginning of the 2021 season and locking him up through his age 29 or 30 season wouldn’t be a bad idea.

Not exactly sure what he could be looking at in free agency and he would probably be too risky of a target for us, but would 3/$21 million be enough? Garcia’s contract is coming off the books after this season and I think that if we are serious about making a run for a World Series with Yelich in his prime, a cheap Hiura, and a cheap yet dominant bullpen, we might need to take a risk on a guy or two like Dahl. Pair him with La Stella and call it an offseason.

I imagine we could bring those two in and still fill out the roster while coming in around the $90 million mark which should be a pretty realistic number for us to have this season.

Just going to say via Statcast, Dahl has a career BA 30pts over his expected BA. A batting profile that would be like Keon Broxton in that he swings alot more than the average MLB player but his contact % is lower by 5% than the average MLB player. There isn't anything in his bat profile that says he is a top 30% hitter for MLB. His K% is 26% and BB% is 6.5% both lower than average MLB player.

Similar Batters to David Dahl: 2019 - Ramon Laureano

2019 - Danny Santana

2019 - JaCoby Jones

2019 - James McCann

2019 - Anthony Santander

Think we should let another team take on a Coors Field inflated batter who doesn't provide Defense to outweigh the lower bat.

DJ Lemahieu? before making an argument against him. Complete opposite. Is a top 10 expected BA. Swings 6% less in zone and 5% less chase while having 8% better zone contact and a freaky 14% better contact chasing. He has a better chase percentage contact than Dahl has for in the zone contact percentage. So Coors effect is not at play with Lemahieu's numbers.

Going to pop out some names as I look in to them from Statcast of non tendered players.

1b a 29old Rangel Ravelo StL. He has under 200BA for ML career so you ask why this guy? Well, it's a total of 84PAs. The thing is in 2019 his exit velo for 39 balls in play was 93.8. 2HRs that statcast put would be 3 at Miller Park. His minors career is 499SO in 3515 PAs or 19.9% basically. triple splits: .299/.370/.440-810OPS. It's not clamoring to be Milw's 1b it's a sign with invite to Spring Training and see. He's obviously just be a pre-arb player and at least that potential BA/OB would be helpful.

Wow, I mean I looked over position players and that was it. Ravelo is literally the only interesting guy that I think with more games played may approach similar stats of his Minor League numbers. Doesn't offer much in terms of power bat maybe 15HRs. This is sorta a Jesus Aguilar mold?

How do you have a decent offseason, when virtually nobody you sign will be good? Probably explains why the team has 5 catchers on the 40man.

Not sure about the Aguilar comparison, but he's been a good contact hitter in the upper minors for some time. Would you prefer a guy like him for close to minimum salary over a more proven power bat like Cron for $4 million or so? I mean Freitas can play 1B and he's got a career AAA line of .326/.403/.474 which is considerably better than Rayelo.

I like your thinking. I cringe at the thoughts of retreads and would prefer a guy like this. Maybe James Loney could be a fair comparison as to what he could turn into for hitting if all goes right?
