Pretty impressive game here against Indiana. Its been a dog fight the entire second half, and the way they fought back after going down 6 late and twice having to defend on a tie game with the shot clock off before taking control in 2nd OT. Fun game to watch.

that was a fun one.

B1G is just stacked this year. Four teams in KenPom top 10.

Maryland beat UW and Indiana gave them all they could handle. There were frequent UW defensive lapses in both games, but neither Maryland nor Indiana are poor or even mediocre teams. Nebraska is the only dog in the league and they actually have a decent amount of run and jump talent.

Also, there were too many times the offense was simply playing five out and not touching the post. Micah Potter needs to keep his head on straight. Yelling at Alando Tucker doesn't help.

Didn't catch the game. Did they get into it on the sideline?

I didn't catch all of the interaction, but I thought it was explained as potter was getting visibly upset and tucker took him out if the huddle to try and calm him down and talk to him. I don't know what was causing potter to be upset.

Maryland won at Illinois today, too.

It's possible the Big Ten could have ten teams, maybe eleven, make the tournament.

Is this Wisconsin team for real? Gheesh.

They are a middle of the road B10 team that can't match up athletically to high end athletic teams that play with effort and discipline.

This has been the case going on 20+ years now... they'll be fine. Likely a top 4 finish in a loaded B1G and a great shot at another Sweet 16.

I think this quote epitomizes what is wrong with college sports.

A few programs have championship aspirations. And then the vast majority of programs have aspirations like this -- "maybe we can finish top 4 in our conference. Maybe we can play in a New Years bowl. Maybe we can make the Sweet 16."

UW signed another 2021 recruit today. Kid from Estonia that has only played two years of high school ball here. Tape looks really good. Maybe Covid kept him from getting discovered.

Well, it wasn't that long ago that we were just happy to make the big dance. We have been pretty regularly in the top 15 and rarely outside the top 25. Lots of teams are jealous of our success (both BB and FB). I suppose we could sell out our university and just become an amateur sports complex like Kentucky or Alabama.

During that time they barely lost in the NCAA finals and they made it to the final four(as well as numerous other deep runs).

Though I'm curious why you'd say that has been the problem for just the last 20 years and not since they started playing organized sports?

There have ALWAYS been programs that have superior talent. I don't know how this is limited to the past 20 years or even the problem with College sports.

The only way to fix this, force colleges to draft HS players. This isn't going to happen and as such, there's really no "fix."

I wasn't saying it has only been a problem for the last 20 years -- not sure where I implied that but if I did it was unintentional.

It would be nice if we got our turn as a blueblood, but I do concede that both the basketball and football programs are certainly so much further along than they were 30 years ago or so.

I read that as though you were inferring this was an issue that's come about for roughly the last 20 years.

I don't believe Wisconsin is ever going to truly become a "blueblood" in either of those sports. Their academic standards are too high and their in-state talent is not nearly high enough. In just about every case, you need both of those working in your favor.

Instead, the Badgers have been able to build great programs while not lowering their admission standards like many colleges and they're constantly among the top programs in the country. I guess I'm just not sure what you'd like the NCAA, the Badgers, or anyone involved with Collegiate athletics to do?

I kinda feel like we're living in the golden era of Wisconsin sports(at least FB and BB).

That was Oxy's post in reference to our program status specifically (post 138)

Ok...I feel like we're kinda getting hung up on the wrong issue here. He said that's how long that has been the case and you agreed and said that was the problem with College athletics.

I guess I don't really understand the problem or why it's the problem with College Athletics. I get that we don't attract the most talented athletes usually...but that's just the reality of being a Wisconsin state school. And how could this "problem" be rectified....in your opinion?

Well the problem to me stated simply is that many programs, including ours, can't realistically expect to compete for NCAA Championships. I mean you can never say never and we were close in '14....but we're obviously not a blueblood like Alabama or OSU or an NBA farm like Duke or Kentucky. I understand that that's the reality of cheering for a Wisconsin state school, but the competitive imbalance to me, is a problem.

I will say that I'm sure not everyone considers it a problem and that's fine. If you can take joy in things like Sweet 16 appearances and winning the Paul Bunyan axe and the like -- more power to you. Of course I do personally take great enjoyment in recent NY6 Bowl wins for UW in the Cotton and Orange Bowls, but there will always be a slight hint of dissatisfaction knowing that for us, things like that are basically our championship equivalency.

As far as how to fix the issue, unfortunately that's a bit over my head. But I do like the previous idea in this thread of requiring universities to guarantee their scholarships for 4 years. I also would like to see better oversight from the NCAA that real academic standards are being upheld by all schools to maintain eligibility for sports participation. That's where I would start.

Well...for starters, the 4-year scholarships SHOULD be guaranteed either way. You should only lose your scholarship if you quit or if you get into some trouble. Something that you can control. Grades is another. It should be like a contract. But I don't think that does much to level the playing field. As far as I know, Wisconsin does this pretty much across the board. Even guys who get injured in other sports have maybe lost their athletic scholarship so they don't count against the limit, but still get some type of aid.

With regard to winning a title...I guess I just look at it like this, there are ~350 schools playing BB and about 130 playing CFB. We're in the top 10 pct on average and some years maybe a little higher...and I just hope we're able to put it all together like we nearly did in 2014 or the FF appearances in 2000 or 2013 as well.

The Football team was one TD away from being in the playoffs just a few years ago when we lose a close game to OSU when we were 13-0 in the B1G title game and that's good enough for me. To be competitive year after year.

I'd love to see us take the next step, but to go from a 10-11 win program year after year to a Clemson/Alabama type program....usually takes sacrifices I don't think are worth it. Rember the trash human beings Nebraska was letting on the team when they won their 3 titles? So yeah, maybe I am just happy with what we get. It's kinda like being a Brewers fan. I've accepted things aren't equal and it'll be tougher for us to ever win a World Series than the Yankees or the Dodgers and I just enjoy seeing them be competitive.

I don't exactly know what you are talking about, but this is what I think...... If the school giving a scholarship loses the scholarship for the entire four year period, it would even things out a little bit. I don't know how many early entrants Alabama will have this year into the NFL... probably 5-8. If they lost those 5 scholarships for the entire four years, it would hurt a little bit. Same thing with Duke and Kentucky in BB. Just my thoughts
