Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2020 - 21

There is no penalty for throwing your name into the transfer portal this season, I'd bet 20% of college basketball is in there.

I mean, there is a reason we won the 2020 championship.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Nate Reuvers going pro. Just can't see it but good luck.

Does that mean nobody wanted him in the transfer portal?

Remember what Yoda said:

Nope, he did it just to keep his options open.

Lots of leagues overseas - Europe, China, Russia, etc. You'd be surprised how many non-superstar college players end up overseas somewhere. I don't think anyone pictured Marquette's Juan Anderson playing pro ball, but he went overseas, worked on his game, got a two-way contract, and has started 15 games for Golden State this year.

Don’t underestimate the nice career that you can make for yourself overseas. I played NAIA ball, and a lot of guys made decent salaries playing in the smaller leagues. Not Bentley money, but $100k a year living in Greece or Iceland isn’t the worst way to spend your 20s.

Trevor Anderson is transferring to Valpo.

I don’t know what will make this guy happy. He had a good freshman season at UWGB with a scholarship and a starting role, but left to walk on for the Badgers (OK, he wants to play ‘big time’ basketball. I get it). Now he’s headed back to a mid-major.

I’m not gonna rip on a kid for not knowing what he wants at 18, but he acted like a clown when he left Green Bay by burning a UWGB pennant on social media.

Davison returning...

Of all of the Badger seniors, Davison always seemed the most likely to return, but I had honestly assume that the ship had passed on all of them. I'd have to go back and look as to whether Davison had actually posted a 'farewell' or if it was just assumed. If the former, I'd be curious to know why the reversal.

I’m glad Davison is coming back because it makes the Badgers a better team next year.

If we got a transfer who had started for 4 years at a Power 5 school who averaged 10+ per game for his career who just dropped 29 in a NCAA tourney game everybody would be ecstatic, but since his name is Brad Davison...

Why do people dislike him so much? I’m a big badger fan, and I think he is a decent rotation player - not a star or anything, but he makes the team overall better.

The NCAA created a rule about flopping (falling down while trying to draw a charge) because of him. He was also accused of punching a guy in the groin while fighting through a screen. There are other incidents where he seems like a bit of jerk.

The NCAA most definitely didn’t create the flopping rule because of just Brad Davison. There are some instances where he embellishes it more (just like any other defender has to sell the contact because have you ever seen a ref call a charge without the defender ending up on the ground?) but most of the time there is a decent amount of contact. I consider flopping to be where there is no contact at all and the player tries to sell a foul.

What are these instances where he has been a jerk?

He was a massive flopper and it was kind of sad/pathetic sometimes. He was a major reason, if not the straw that broke the camel's back to have that rule implemented.

He also was a bit of a dirty player. I believe he has multiple below the belt shots in his career and other iffy/questionable plays too.

On that clip, I’d consider #3 close to a flop but he’s definitely not the only player to do that. There is significant contact on the remaining four and you’ve got to sell it to get the call - take that up with the refs not the player... you’d think that how much people complain about taking a charge that it would be like a player leaning into the strike zone for a HPB, you know, against the rules.

I believe he’s got two instances where he got somebody below the belt, I found the one against Hauser to be iffy (in terms of intent) but won’t deny that he got him in the junk. I consider a dirty player to be somebody like Diamond Stone bouncing Vito Brown’s (I think it was him) head against the floor, Grayson Allen tripping multiple people or Adam Woodbury from Iowa poking multiple people in the eye - players doing things that are outside of a normal basketball play.

I’m not going to change anybody’s mind over this as everybody already has their own opinion (and won’t deny that I am seeing these thru a homer-tinted lense), but I think his reputation as a dirty player isn’t completely fair when most of the time people include him taking charges as part of it.

ETA - These are flops:

Brad Davison was known nationally as the premier flopper in college basketball and the cause for the flopping rule for a reason...he was a flopper and much more so than the typical player. Whether he was why the rule actually happened or not...who knows. When you are known as the biggest flopper in the sport the prior season you are probably one of the main reasons for the rule though.

UW in general has been accused of flopping for many years.

Re: Davison - Next year's team is gonna be so young it will be nice to have a guy with a ton of in-game experience out there.
