Wisconsin Basketball Thread 2020 - 21

homer

Jeez, at least look like you want to win. Pretty sad when a group of senior blows an inbounds pass like that...and I am pretty sure they had a timeout to call if they needed to. As lifeless and sleepy the players looked Gard really dropped the ball if he could have called a timeout. I don't care if it is your last timeout, it was pretty obvious the team had zero awareness on what they were doing. Once you turn it over there you have pretty much blown your last decent chance at winning the game.

Gard just couldn't get any life out of them at the end of that game and that was pretty sad. Davison and Potter often times look like the only guys who want to win a game.

I don’t follow college basketball too closely, but I see Duke, Kentucky, and Virginia are all in danger of missing the NCAA tournament. Is that because they weren’t able to schedule Little Sisters of the Poor and inflate their records with a bunch of non-conference home wins or are there deeper issues with each program?

Well Duke is out with COVID. Don't follow closely enough to know about the other two.

Virginia had a good year. Won the league. Had a COVID test but sure seem eligible still at the moment (though who knows?). Duke never got rolling. K was hesitant (for generally good reasons) about even playing, no home-court and a lot of Freshmen in weird circumstances hurt some teams. Weird year.

As for the Badgers, a lot of these guys may be back. This season doesn't count eligibility-wise.

They just don't have a pro. That's it, really. There's enough there to keep them in games, but Trice is the only one comfortable late clock, and he's just undersized. Makes it tough when the B1G is loaded with quick, athletic guards (and swing men who aren't lost on a ball-screen switch) who are 6'5". They have to move the ball and make open looks to win, and that's a recipe for inconsistency. I think they get pretty easy to defend in the halfcourt when they're in pick-and-roll, largely because neither Potter nor Reuvers have a quick release.

Davis needs to be a star for them to be good. But, sure, they can win a game or two in the tournament. I'm not afraid of any non-B1G team not named Baylor or Gonzaga. If the Badgers are in the 7-10 game with, say OK St or really any Big 12 or SEC team, I'd give them decent odds at Sweet 16.

Put it this way, I'd take the over on .5 wins. Faint praise, I know, but it'll keep you invested through the weekend, at least...

Seniors may return next year, yes. We have heard it a bunch. What I haven’t heard is ALL of the answers to the other questions..... do they get a year scholarship, as well, or is it out of pocket? If they choose to return, does the coach have to have them? Are incoming scholarship freshmen assured of roster spots? How many roster spots are there in 21-22? How many will be permitted on scholarship? What will red shirting look like, and what will be the real reasoning?

This is concerns just off the top of my head for two minutes. It surely will be a complicated mess.

Yeah. It is going to be odd. I would think the Badgers would take anyone back, but there's also presumably going to be free transfers, right? Could see Reuvers taking that route, maybe to an A10 or even Big East school, but who knows? One of Kentucky's freshman just entered transfer portal, so that may be a way coaches compensate for being unable to do any of the traditional recruiting stuff.

Side note: Wonder if St Thomas going D1 will impact Badger recruiting in MN...probably not, but just thinking aloud.

9th seed in the South vs. North Carolina and would play Baylor if they win.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

One and done.

+1. Short of a covid outbreak on gameday.

I know that Marquette (barely) beat Wisconsin (early in the season), but if you watched the Marquette-UNC game you would not be saying that Wisconsin is one and done against UNC. Marquette dominated them.

North Carolina isn't very good but the tourney is about matchups and I don't like this matchup for UW. UNC's bad on offense but the one thing they do well is get offensive boards and for whatever reason Reuvers and Potter are just not good rebounders. The one thing UW has going for it is that UNC plays really fast and traditionally those teams have a tough time against slower-paced teams like Wisconsin, Virginia, etc.

I'm guessing KenPom has this as about a two point UW victory. He hasn't put together the matchups yet.

UNC isn't a great match up, but UNC isn't a great team. They probably aren't going to win in the paint so they will have to win the perimeter game in my opinion. Baylor is the best #1 team to draw (if they can beat UNC first) in my opinion. They aren't what they were for most of the season. If I was a Badgers fan I would want to face Baylor over just about any #2 seed to be honest.

I wouldn't be optimistic Wisconsin could win any game because they just haven't played well. I would say their veteran experience would be huge in March, but the entire season it hasn't benefitted them much...so not sure that will be an advantage they can actually utilize. That being said it is still March and anything can happen. The Badgers have played elite teams all year and while they never really won any of them they have the experience facing those kind of teams. Winning a 9v8 match up isn't that hard and I have a hard time seeing Baylor not getting upset before the Elite 8. I really wouldn't not be that shocked if the Badgers can make a run. I don't think they are a Top 16 team or anywhere near it, but many teams that aren't that good find themselves in the Sweet 16.

So much better to watch when the zebras let them play a bit.

Ha! I just texted my buddy "I hope Bo Boroski is watching to see how a game should be officiated"

Probably the best half of the year for the Badgers.

Sadly, we’ve seen this movie before. I seem to remember saying the same thing at least twice this season and then they couldn’t hit the broad side of a barn in the second half.

We’ll see, I guess.

They were a top 10 team at one point...and looked like it until they ran into Michigan.
