Cain for Longoria

Recommended Posts

Longo has 2/45 left on his deal & has put up a 94 wRC+ with 3.3 WAR over the last three seasons.

Lorenzo has 2/35 left on his deal & has put up a 104 wRC+ with 7.4 WAR over the last three seasons.

Based on contract/production it looks like the Giants would likely have to send some cash or prospect capital along with Longo.

Longoria is in San Francisco solely because Tampa Bay wanted to get out from under his contract 3 years ago (so badly in fact, that the smallest market team sent the Giants 14 million dollars in the deal)

Since his "mythical age 27 season" in 2013 Longoria has hit .260/.314/.440; yet he's being paid an AAV of in excess of 20 million dollars per year. It's a terrible contract for a player who is mediocre to slightly below mediocre.

In this scenario not only is Cain the better talent at this stage of their respective careers (.294/.355/.422 since age 27 season), but he's also the less expensive talent as well. The Brewers would be foolish to consider this trade.

Moreover, the Giants are currently a second rate team and are looking to get younger, so Cain really isn't a match for them. In fact, the Giants would probably give away Longoria if they could get young talent in return.

Lto.Longoria's contract is much like Braun and maybe Yelich. Folklore type of player, made Franchise player in contract. #3 pick and had enough talent and memorable hits to fit the bad contract extensions profile. I don't doubt any bit that Tampa signed knowing they were trading him. Ideally like we believed for Braun and now Yelich a value that would still likely return a top tier prospect when doing so.

Anyway, I'm a fan of Cain, keep him through contract. It's Garcia who needs to go.

I trust Cain to be a better player going forward than Longoria. He's still an elite defender at his position. Longoria is good - but not elite anymore.

Longoria has been a - roughly - average hitter the last four years. Not bad, but not good either. But he is what he is.

Cain offers some more upside than Longoria. His 2019 campaign was not good at the plate, and last year he elected to sit out, but before that he was really good. Obviously, it's not easy to predict the bat of a 35-year old player. But I see him as having the ability to get back to his 2018 form - rather than accept average (at best) from Longoria. Even if Cain's bat doesn't come back, his glove should still be an asset.

How about the Brewer's connect with the Giants and each team solves a weakness? Lorenzo Cain for Evan Longoria even up. The Giants need outfield help, the Brewer's need a third baseman. Would either team want more?

I don't think the Giants need outfield help all that much. Dickerson (.974 OPS) and Yastrzemski (.968 OPS) were two of the best hitters in the NL in 2020. I think they'll make a play for Pederson to add depth but Dubon wasn't bad in CF either. Longoria's been on the decline for quite a while and isn't the answer for the Brewers. I'd rather get Brandon Crawford.

How about Cain to the Phillies for Jean Segura? Phillies could certainly use an upgrade in CF. Segura and Cain both have two years remaining on their deals. Cain is owed $6 million more than Segura over the next two seasons, but it could be evened out by splitting the difference.
