2020 Bucks NBA draft thread

patrickgpe

Now that the finals are over, I think its safe to start looking forward to the draft. Its only about a month away also.

The bucks had the 18th pick going into the bubble but the Pacers good play caused them to fall to 24. Honestly I wouldn't be surprised if this pick isn't traded tp help land Giannis some help, but if they make the pick, some of my favorites are:

1) Josh Green, Arizona. Good defender, if he can develop a 3 pt shot could be a great pickup

2) Cassius Winston - MSU. Bucks are in win now mode, not develop. Could help immediately at the backup PG position.

3) Jahmius Ramsey - Texas Tech - undersized 2, good scorer, seems like a strong defender.

one other point, would love the bucks to buy a late 2nd and get Marcus Howard. I know he is small but that kid can shoot.

Normally teams that are in the cap position the Bucks are in trade out of the 1st round. I would expect the Bucks to trade out of the 1st round or pick someone from the Euro leagues who won't be coming over to play right away.

Howard could be a good get in the 2nd round though his defense is a bit questionable. He definitely fits into Bud's offensive philosophy and would be interesting to see him in the NBA.

Quick edit if the Bucks do draft someone I think Desmond Bane (G/F, TCU) is probably a good pick as he is someone who could step in and play off the bench. He is a 3 and D type of a player.

All these guys certainly make sense. If they keep the pick though...and think a guy like Theo Maledon has a big upside, I hope they choose the route the Spurs took rather than that of the Cavs with LeBron.

Pick the player who could develop into a star down the road rather than a contributor in the short term.

It would be nice to get a shooter in this draft, Ramsey does intrigue me as an undersized 2. Bucks could use another big guy but there doesn't seem to be anything available where they are picking. Bane would be a nice pickup. but i haven't seen a mock draft where he is available. I think this thing will be interesting as there will be less opportunities to workout these players with COVID, it may cause some surprises in the draft.

  • 4 weeks later...

Nine days to draft day. What will they do? Trade it? Pick a shooter? Or the big 7' Serbian?

My pick would be Aleksej Pokusevski. All sorts of potential and a back up plan if Giannis walks. Fix the shooting issues with Free Agents. Joe Harris or Dragic would be sweet, but I dont know if we can afford it. Maybe Justin Holliday.

I think the player that would make the most excited is Winston. Yes he has no ceiling, but if the bucks are in win-now mode, he will help on day 1.

Besides Green and Rahmsey, I'm seeing Bane available in more mock drafts. Similar to Winston, not much ceiling as a senior, but the bucks could sure use another 6'5" shooter. One more guy, Malachi Flynn, another older 3 and D guy.

All shooting for me. Even buy a 2nd rounder and grab another one. Hopefully one pans out fairly quickly. If there was one who had ballhandling/quickness to be a lead handler in ball screen that's great too, strongly doubt that's available for them though. So likely 3 and D types but hopefully who can at least attack a close out.

Just going to reiterate this point...but this type of ideology leads to marginal players(usually). I'd rather they use their 1st round pick on someone with a higher upside who may take longer to reach it. The Spurs for example...seldom drafted for need and they drafted several studs late in the 1st round.

Does anyone really think someone we pick at 24 is going to make a difference next season? Especially at Guard?

My opinion, no. That is why I would pick Aleksej Pokusevski if he is still there.

Malcom Brogdon says hi. :)

But seriously, I do agree that you should be looking at higher ceiling players. Just that sometimes scouting doesn't best identify a player's ceiling.

I looked back at our draft history this morning and nearly cried. Brogdon is the only one that made a first year impact in a long time - basically since Jabari Parker.

2019 R1-30: Kevin Porter Jr. (Traded with Snell for Jon Leuer)

2018 R1-17: Donte DiVincenzo

2017 R1-17: D.J. Wilson

2017 R2-48: Sindarius Thornwell (Traded for cash)

2016 R1-10: Thon Maker

2016 R2-36: Malcolm Brogdon

2016 R2-38: Patrick McCaw (Traded for cash)

2015 R1-17: Rashad Vaughn

2015 R2-46: Norman Powell (Traded with a 1st rnd pick for Greivis Vásquez)

2014 R1-2: Jabari Parker

2014 R2-31: Damien Inglis

2014 R2-36: Johnny O'Bryant

2014 R2-48: Lamar Patterson (Traded)

2013 R1-15: Giannis Antetokounmpo

2013 R2-43: Ricky Ledo (Traded)

its bad. I am not against drafting for potential, but the problem is that most of the time it never pans out. Maker and Vaughn were probably the 2 biggest, lets try to get another Giannis picks they have made, both flopped big time. Wilson is right behind them too.

Its a young draft, like it is every year, players get pushed down the draft board, simply for being upperclassman in the NBA. I think the bucks can get a pretty decent player that can help on Day 1, if they draft Winston or Bane. I mean if you want to draft a 7 footer who isn't even 200 lbs, and see if you can develop him, so be it, but I think we have seen that show before.

Winston from MSU to me doesnt have the quickness for a lead G in the NBA. I'm generally low on him, but yea I could totally see Malcolm Brogdon type level happening. Where he's not ideal if he has the ball in his hands a ton but if his 3 pt shot is real he's good enough to attack closeouts. I suppose that late in the draft I wouldn't really complain, he has a chance to make it.

Yeah...he just won his 2nd straight MVP and DPOY award!

But I take your point...and I'd still take that chance. Maker DID have all the ability to be a star. Maybe if he'd been in a better system or maybe it was just his work ethic. But when you hit on those guys, it changes your franchise.

That said, as I watched looked closer at the draft, the more I was hoping we'd grab Winston with that 1st 2nd round pick(or only, I don't know).

I guess the logic that because a guy has played 3 years of CBB, he doesn't have a huge upside is flawed. Kawhi was hardly a blue chip NBA prospect.

My point was that yes hit a once in a generation home run with Giannis, but chased him with Maker, Wilson, and Vaughn, who were all high ceiling guys and were big duds.

I like what they did yesterday, they took 2 older guys who can help next season but won't be more than bench guys probably.

In theory, i'm OK with drafting for potential in round 1 and taking seniors in round 2. Its just that the hit rate isn't that great in the nba.

Yes, but Wilson (though I'd contend he wasn't a high ceiling guy), Vaughn and even Giannis were different in that they came to the NBA with an "NBA body".

Most rookies need to get stronger when they come to the NBA, but precious few 7' guys that have the beanpole body-type are going to succeed. (Manute Bol-extreme example; Shawn Bradley-taller, but still skinny body type) No doubt Thon is talented, but his body type is so slight (7'1", 216lb at draft, 221lb now), he struggles to complete physically with similarly sized players.

There was a lot of "hope" at the time Thon was drafted that he'd gain weight/strength similar to Giannis, but you look at the guy's frames and they are very different. My first thought in seeing the guy play was Manute Bol and concerned that he'd never gain the weight needed. That hasn't changed.

Maker was 3 inches taller and 30 pounds heavier than Giannis. And he was a freak athlete(3rd highest vertical in combine history for a player his height).

So I don't see any comparison to Bol or Bradley. He also had plenty of room to fill out his frame. I don't agree his frame was much different. Maker has broad shoulders and could have put on the weight if he'd been willing to put in the time.

The bottom line...at least IMO, Maker could have been a really good player. He just didn't put in the time or the work that Giannis did.

Edit-https://bleacherreport.com/articles/2639737-thon-maker-nba-combine-2016-measurements-analysis-and-draft-projection

There's a whole run-down in there and reasons why Maker would take a couple of years to develop, but my point is more about the picture of him. I'm not trying to do a whole..."guess his body fat" game, rather just point out that he's the frame to be the stretch 4 they'd hoped he'd be.

He STILL has that upside. Still...if we had picked Sabonis, we might be celebrating our 2nd Chip in Milwaukee.

I used height/weight ratio because skeletal measurements aren't available. And no, I'm not saying I can guess his body fat... ;)

Yes, I remember all the draft reviews and his athleticism, but watching him play, his frame just looked very different; a much thinner frame. And obviously, he hasn't been able to put on the weight (5 lbs so far). Manute Bol is the extreme, but he still reminds me of him every time I see him; those long spindly arms/legs stick in my mind, but he looks a bit like Bol too (head shape and hair cut).

To be fair, Giannis was also a huge long-shot, which is why he lasted to #15. But I'll still contend that he had the better frame to put on good weight.

It's too bad the one guy that could accurately gauge body fat from a photo no longer posts here :)

This is true...I haven't been studying body fat as some other experts have for years!

Really though, I think the way Giannis remade his body is extremely rare. For a guy that long, that lanky to add that much muscle, it's impressive and shows you he's just a different type of dude. Maker didn't have to go through the Giannis makeover. He just had to get a little stronger. His best year was his rookie year and he just never really took the next step.

That said...he IS a FA and we could do worse if we wanted to add some depth. Just sayin.
