Stearns Rumored to be Promoted to Club President?

So appears to be a very similar situation to what the Cubs did a few years ago with Theo and Jed Hoyer. I would imagine that Stearns and Arnold would still work in tandem on player acquisitions, with Stearns taking on more responsibility on the business side.

I think you have that backwards. With most President/GM tandems the GM is the one worrying about day to day business stuff, thus allowing the top guy to just focus on baseball operations.

A big part of it is to simply give them both a promotion to help keep them around.

Didn't Stearns already get promoted to President of Baseball Operations as a result of rebuffing the Giants approach for him? Of course he could always be promoted again, but there would be no need to do so simply to be able to turn down the Mets approach.

He is currently the General Manager and President of Baseball Operations.

I was hearing rumors that he was going to the Mets so Attanasio must be giving him a raise to stay. Always thought the one job he would leave for is his childhood team but ownership must have stepped up.

Well Stearns can't just get up and leave...he is under contract. He got extended before 2019 and I am guessing said contract was probably at least 3 years and likely didn't include 2019 as one of the years. He wasn't going anywhere even before this promotion.

Yes he is under contract but if he really wanted to go home its possible that Attanasio would let him. With a big money owner and it being his favorite team growing up its easy to see the appeal but it looks like ownership stepped up.

I thought the new Mets owner had indicated he was bringing back Sandy Alderson as GM once the sale was completed?

team president

Then it's probably not much of a rumor. Unless living in New York City is what is most important, it would be a step backwards to go from calling all the shots in Milwaukee, to being the second in command for the Mets.

Seems an odd time to promote your two highest paid baseball execs after the worst offseason in Stearns tenure and the loss of revenues incurred this year. He should be lucky to still have a job.

Sorry John, this is one of the worst hot takes in the nearly 20-year history of the message board.

Attanasio cutting the opening day payroll by 20 million dollars didn't help matters.

The hyperbole is running extra hot today it seems. Evidently a few posters are grouchy after staying up till 12:30 last night.

Stearns is not definitely staying and has in fact been approached by the Mets.

Sure, teams do their due diligence and they contact everyone, which I'm assuming is the case with Stearns.

As it stands, he's 35 years old and has already taken one of the most moribund franchises in the league to the post season 3 straight times. I could see enticement if there was a franchise inherently better positioned to win a championship than Milwaukee, where he'd be running the entire show. However, the soon to be owner of the Mets has indicated Sandy Alderson will be at the top of the organizational chart. With so few front office jobs available at the major league level, it's not the best career move to take jump organizations for an inferior position. Unless, of course, there is a strong desire to return out East that is larger than baseball.

Alderson is in a figurehead position to assure that Cohen gets approved to buy the Mets. They will be hiring someone to run baseball operations and their number one target is Stearns. Whether or not he takes the job is up to Attanasio and Stearns himself but make no mistake about it the job is his if he wants it and Brewers ownership lets him out of his contract.

I didn't intend to bring this to the board until this thread popped up. Attanasio probably caught wind of the Mets interest and is trying to be proactive to keep Stearns happy. This is the one job that has always had the potential to interest Stearns.

We can all laugh at how inept the Mets have mostly been the last few years but Cohen has the opportunity to change that perception very quickly. If approved he will immediately be the richest owner in the sport and he intends to spend it.

This is Stearns childhood team and it just may be his dream job. With a budget that will surely be at least twice the Brewers budget and it being home its easy to see the potential appeal. I'm not saying this is a done deal by any stretch but it has the potental to happen.
