Packers 2020 team discussion

adambr2
I’m glad the Bears lost, but let’s keep in mind they had to play an NFC West team on the road. The Packers will have to do the same in 2 weeks (on short rest) and will likely get their second loss, as well.

I don't know about that. The 49ers are going to be pushing a skeleton crew out there. Let's not play into the narrative that every team in the NFC West is infallible.

Certainly not, but on the road during a short week?

Maybe I’m just trying to manage my own expectations.

I'm assuming a loss in San Francisco until we can prove otherwise.

Skeleton crew or not, they've been jelling again these last two weeks and have held the Rams and Patriots to 22 combined points the last two games. They still have a mostly healthy offensive line that can seemingly put anyone for 100 yards behind them if they commit to a ground attack, which plays into our biggest weakness.

If we had looked like we belonged with them in either game last year I'd feel more confident that we're ready to get that monkey off our back. We need to show that we can at least compete on their field.

Lazard practicing in pads. We might see him against San Fran.

Do we know exactly what Lazard had? Core muscle surgery... hernia?

It has to be. When they said he had surgery on a core muscle but wasn't going to sit out the whole season AND that he opted to have the surgery instead of hoping it healed on its own, it seemed really clear that it was a sports hernia.

That'd be huge to get him back. He adds a real physical presence to this offense. He's really a very skilled TE as far as I'm concerned.

The offense looks pretty good to me if we can get him back, get healthy. It just one of the two young big WR'ers steps up...if EQ can gain a little confidence, that could make a big difference. If MVS could show a little consistency(he doesn't even have to be great, just...decent) that'd be great. They don't both have to be studs.

Of course...Rodgers has to trust more than just one WR'er and Ervin has come back as he's apparently just irreplaceable.

PFF has GB rated the worst tackling team in the league. That's probably more on Gute/coaches than scheme.

WHAT???

How good do you think a team that leads the league in snaps from the DIME defense is going to be at tackling? Playing small is never going to equate to a good tackling team. Deciding to play with 6 DBs so much and sacrifice against the run is entirely SCHEME.

What's really sad is that in spite of making the CHOICE to hamstring themselves against the run with 6 DBs, here are some key passing defense rankings...

Opposing QB rating: 109.8 (29th)

Opposing QB Completion Percentage: 71.5% (30th)

INT: 2 (31st)

Yards Per Completion: 8.0 (27th)

So despite setting themselves up to play the run with one arm tied behind their back, they're still terrible at defending the pass.

COMPLETELY BROKEN

Most of those passing stats are a result of not passing. The Bucs scored 38 points with 166 yards on 17 completions. Cousins had 160 yards on 11/14 with a TD = 138.1 QB rating.

The ratings are high because there is no reason to throw into the secondary very often. So there are limited turnover opportunities and few high-risk/difficult throws.

The scheme is comically awful. Preston Smith is lined up like Deion Sanders. This is a coach that thinks he's reinvented the wheel and the rest of the league is laughing.

They're giving up 8 yards per completion at a 71.5% rate. This isn't all dink and dunk throws. The point is - they're laying out a red carpet for opposing teams to run and by and large they are. When teams do pass against this dime defense, they are VERY efficient at it. This scheme is broken in every possible way.

Kirk Cousins' lone TD was a 50-yard screen to Dalvin Cook. It's pretty much exactly what I said. The secondary isn't really an issue. You can't give every offense 2nd and 2 and then almost never hit a QB. You need to help them some way, either with pressure or at least making them throw in difficult spots. They don't do either one. If an offense is never uncomfortable and has carte blanche on what they want to do and is only throwing when they want to it's almost impossible to stop.

When you play 10 yards + off receivers, 8 yards makes sense.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Packers Run Defense vs MIN

8+ Defenders in Box

19 carries, 89yds

Less Than 8 Defenders

15 carries, 84yds

That was some of the heaviest personnel ever deployed by Pettine today...

Dime - 10 Snaps

Nickel - 3 Snaps

Base - 39 Snaps

I'm certainly not blaming all their failures on bad tacklers. Scheme plays a big role. I think half of America predicted screen on that long TD.

There's a chance Tyler Ervin is the only available RB on Thursday.

Still have Dexter Williams on the practice squad who could be activated. I have not seen him linked to the close contact list.

It's official both Jamaal Williams and Kamal Martin are out for Thursday. Hopefully they were just being abundantly cautious with Jones and he can play Thursday, otherwise we're looking at Dexter's Midnight Runner.
