Packers 2020 team discussion

In the Bears' defense (ugh, I can't believe I'm saying that), you'd be hard-pressed to find a 2017 pre-draft QB ranking list that didn't have Trubisky at #1. It's easy for us to say now with the benefit of hindsight that they should have taken Mahomes or Watson. And no doubt, they blew it. But it's not like the Bears went against the grain and took a guy that everyone else had going 3rd among QBs. Trubisky was the consensus #1.

It's a good reminder for people like me that just because your draft board fits in nicely with all the experts doesn't mean it will be a good pick, and just because you had a higher grade on a guy than everyone else doesn't mean you're wrong. Sometimes you're wrong. Sometimes the "experts" are wrong.

I remember thinking Jaire Alexander was a bit of a reach at #18 and Joshua Jackson was a steal in the 2nd round. Whoops.

And by the way, I did like Alexander, but I thought he was a slot corner. I thought Jackson was a huge steal just like you did. Though I still think he can play, we're just much better at CB than we've been in a while...and Alexander has turned into the elite cover man in the NFL.

The history of T-Buck and Carroll makes all Packer fans wince when you draft a short corner.

I'm going to appreciate and savor what could be Rodgers's last (or second last with no guarantees) ride to a Super Bowl with the Packers, He has been so fun to watch. Like all of you, I hope it's longer but with having to pay Adams and Alexander top dollar at their positions soon, Tonyan with his 11 TD's might need to be paid higher than originally expected, and Jenkins and Savage a year or two later., while already paying LT and DT top dollar, the cap will be tight even with a new TV deal you can only pay so many positions top dollar.

Go Pack Go :)

Who's Lance?

Guessing Trey Lance

Who's Lance?

QB prospect from North Dakota State.

6'3 Extremely strong arm, thick, athletic...but hasn't played against much competition and played just one game this y ear. But is still projected to easily go in the 1st round and depending on what mocks you look at, most consider him to go in the top half.

Kinda funny, reading the scouting report on him, his accuracy down the field is very good, and his short passes are what needs work. When is that ever the issue?

This is Packer adjacent but rumors are the Bears are keeping Pace and Nagy.

Seems like they're just postponing the inevitable. I think each will end up finding success elsewhere as they're still relatively young, but they'll both be on the hot seat to enter next season and it's highly unlikely they'll have the QB situation figured out. Their best bet is to probably stick with what they have and hope Trey Lance falls to them or...I guess grab Mac Jones. But unlikely either will take them from a ~8 win team to a real contender in the near future.

Pace in particular looks bad. 4 straight top 10 picks and the best of them has been Roquan Smith. Kevin White was injured from the start, Floyd...who we'll see this week, is a really solid player(10.5 sacks this year) but didn't get it done in Chicago and they decided to replace him with the more expensive, less athletic version of him.

He's had some big hits...like Eddie Jackson, Amos, Eddie Goldman(not sure if Hicks was there when he got there or not).

But all that would have been wiped away if they'd just taken one of the other two QB's available. Not that many people considered either in place for that pick, but damn, that set the Bears back 5 years already.

I think you could also make the case that there might be some deficiencies in QB development in Chicago. Especially when compared to KC.

Bleacher Report did a long article on it all a few months back. Trubisky was understood, at least by the Bears, to not have the ceiling of Mahomes or Watson, but certainly a higher floor. And the Bears GM was more interested in the sure thing.

That may be the case...but Nagy was Mahomes OC his first two seasons. So it's kinda hard to figure out exactly how good Nagy is at developing QB's. How much credit does he get for Mahomes...how much blame does he get for Trubisky?

Nagy got his job largely because of Mahomes success and his perceived role in it.

That makes a lot of sense. I think everyone knew that Mahomes had a TON of talent. I'd be curious to know why they thought Watson didn't have a higher floor or was such a risk though.

They didn't even bother talking to Watson. They met with Mahomes and Trubisky.

Just reading this, I feel ready to run through a brick wall if it would help the team this weekend; guessing most of you will feel the same way.

That's pretty damn cool. Watching the McAfee show this year and getting some insight into Aaron Rodgers and the Packers and then reading this article...this is the most inside the Packers we've ever gotten as a fan base.

If the Packers win it all ...

1) Does Devin Funchess get a ring?

2) Do you think he should?

1) I have no knowledge to back this up (my obligatory 30 seconds of googling came up empty), but I would think it works like being on IR, right? In any event, I think the team can decide who to give rings to.

2) Absolutely not. No disrespect to him, as I have no ill will for him at all for making the call he did. But rings should go to those who suit up and take the risk. Active roster, trainers, ball girls, heck, give it to practice squad guys. But not someone who chose not to be a part of the effort this year.

Agreed with Harvey on this one...but I think he probably does get a ring.

He could be a nice addition next year, but he did nothing to help the team this year. Which I don't fault him for, but I did more than he did to help this team by just buying Packers merchandise.

So yes would be my guess and no would be my answer.

1) Yes, the Packers are a first-class organization. The Queen could have stripped Harry of his Dukedom after he opted out of the royal family, but she didn’t because it would have been petty.

2) No, he opted out. But would he even want one?

I might lean no on Funchess only because he wasn’t really ever a part of the team. If it was a guy who had been with the team previously I would probably say yes.

That's a fair point. I think if it was Aaron Jones or Corey Linsley having opted out you'd have to look at it a little differently.

He's probably not coming back next year regardless so the heck with him.

His contract just carries over to next year and he has said he looks forward to playing with them next season. As long as he has stayed in shape and has a decent camp in August I see no reason he won't be back. We could still use the WR depth.

1.Here's another hypothetical. If the Packers win the Super Bowl, who will be their Thursday Night opponent opening up the 2021 season? Besides the divisional rivals, their home opponents are the Rams, Seahawks, Steelers, Browns and Washington. I'm leaning toward a rematch with the Rams and Seattle a close second.

2. In a related note, we play the Saints in New Orleans next year. Brees is most likely retiring and they are in worse cap hell than we are. I think we caught a break there and the Bears getting stuck playing at Tampa.

I would guess it's KC and GB if that ends up being a SB rematch, although we still don't know where that game will be played.

The Saints are in ACTUAL cap hell. They'd be in trouble even if the Cap had gone up.

The Packers are nowhere near Cap Hell. Even assuming the floor is the cap, they're just fine. ESPN just did a write up about all the playoff teams cap situations. The Packers were in better shape than just about any other team when looking at cap space(most were negative) and Free Agents.

That article said the Packers could get under the cap just by converting Bahktiari's roster bonus into a signing bonus, extending Adams, and cutting Kirksey. There's still a lot of other things to figure out, Preston Smith(who is likely gone or restructures) and rookie contracts.

The Saints on the other hand are ~100 million over that floor if Brees doesn't come back(which I think is a given at this point). They might have to move Lattimore or Ramcyzk. Either would be almost unfathomable in a normal year.

It's going to be a real tough year for veteran FA's and veterans on NFL teams if they don't come to some type of agreement. Could really help teams like the Jaguars and Pats...the two teams that will have a lot of space, either way, turn things around real quick.

Absolutely he'd want it. And if you do, too, you'll be able to find it on Ebay the following week.

Yeah, no reason to turn down free money. The Chiefs rings were worth roughly 38K.

So who's turning down roughly 40 grand?

He's probably not coming back next year regardless so the heck with him.

It will be pretty interesting to see if he is on the team next year. We'd save 1.3 million from cutting him...but he's going to be 27 and he is pretty talented. I'd at least give him through camp to see how he fits. Another big, physical WR'er. He seems pretty redundant, but unless we use a high pick on a WR'er, or better yet if we could find a way to bring in someone like Curtis Samuel(a FA), he probably wouldn't be worth bringing back.

Here's a controversial cap question:

Given that our offensive line hasn't really missed a beat in his absence and he'll be 30 this year, would it have been the smart financial move to let Bahktiari walk?

I know he's been a cornerstone of this franchise for years and not paying him would have been a widely unpopular move, I am just curious if people think that there were legitimate business reasons not to.
