Badger Football 2020 (Latest- Headed to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl (seriously)

Another Hornibrook situation here I'm sure.

Except Coan is good

He may be a bit better than Hornibrook but I think he'll end up as a backup and we probably won't hear much from him. Could be wrong but ND returns their top 2 QB's as well as brings in a top recruit.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

I think Book is going to go pro, but they do have a top 50 recruit coming in.

Coan may be the projected starter during spring practice - and he'll have an opportunity to win that job against a couple other underclassmen and that top 50 recruit. I can see Kelly hoping to redshirt the top recruit and bring Coan in as the projected starter who competes with the other underclassman QBs to start in 2021.

I think Coan was offered (and possibly accepted) a lacrosse scholarship to Notre Dame before committing to UW for football so this move makes sense based on his familiarity with the school.

Coan is probably a borderline backup QB talent at the NFL level, so if he wants to pursue that as a career it definitely makes sense for him to maximize his opportunities now. He won't do that here behind Mertz. I wish Coan well.

One of those two is a mid-3-star recruit, the other a low-4-star recruit (and 5'11", 195) who was a true freshman this year, and from what I hear neither has shown anything special so far. They haven't been bringing in QB talent the last few years because those kids knew that they will be stuck behind Book.

FWIW, Coan was a higher rated recruit than Book.

A big thing missed in all the Mertz hype the last few year is that Coan is pretty good himself. He was also a highly rated recruiter (probably our 2nd or 3rd after Mertz and maybe Houston), and has played well since he started playing. Instead of appreciating him everyone just had their eyes on Mertz. Coan or Tolzien would be our best QBs the last 20 years or so other than Wilson.

I know it's a tough situation with all the receivers out but it seems to me Coan was currently better (essentially folks who spend last year saying Chryst was dumb to not play Mertz right away were likely overblowing it) because of the experience/reads/mental aspects. Mertz missed a lot of things in these games. Mertz talent is clearly superior though and another year of practice/coaching and I think Mertz next year will be the best we've had since Wilson. He was also probably harmed by the weird offseason, maybe normal coaching leading up he'd have been way more ready and at that point his clearly better talent would've won out over Coan for 2020 season.

Book must be going pro or this wouldn't be happening. I'd have my money on Coan being the starter. He is drastically better than Horni.

Are we sure he is going to ND for Football?

Back in the day, I knew a lot of hockey players that also played baseball at Wisconsin. Could he be playing both?

It's not real likely. He'd be getting a FB scholarship(you can't get a scholarship for another sport and play FB or else schools like Alabama would have Wrestling teams and use them to supplement their FB roster and skirt the scholarship limits). And if he's playing FB at ND, it's not likely they'd allow their likely starting QB to play another sport.

But maybe they gave him permission to play Lacrosse. I would think he'd be looking at a potential NFL career and guess he'd be focussed on that though.

Caesar Williams announced he’s returning next year. Badgers only losing 6 that I know of:

Wildgoose

Burrell

Groshek

Loudermilk

Rand

Van Lanen

A couple bigger names yet to announce though.

Bay is gone too. Obviously you hope long snapper is never discussed, but he was a 4 year standout who has a decent chance at making a living.

Williams sort of surprises me because he seems maxed out at this level and his reputation now has the refs anticipating PI and no benefit of the doubt. His play vs. Tyler Johnson was spectacular, but Id given up hope of a higher ceiling after some games last season. But hopefully Im wrong.
