"The timeline of Coan’s decision is not known at this time, but UW coach Paul Chryst said Coan wasn’t available to play against Iowa or Minnesota despite practicing and being suited up on the sideline."

Coan is transferring

And that's a real shame, because while Mertz is clearly the more talented player, it's equally as clear that Coan is the better football player.

If Mertz was going to be a great player, it didn't take long for Madison to turn him into yet another totally mediocre quarterback. The only thing that made Mertz better than Hornibrook in yesterday's game was that he didn't throw three passes directly at opposing players. The guy looked like he had zero confidence and, the worse thing of all, it didn't look like his teammates had any confidence in him either. And that's rare for the Badgers, as they have a pretty long history of the players really rallying around shaky quarterbacks like Joel Stave.

What really bothers me about Coan is that he was cleared to play in early December and the coaches still wouldn't put him in the game after the golden boy recruit got KO'ed. Can't blame the guy for transferring.

Despite all the train-wrecks that happened during the year, the 3-3 record still put them in third place in the division, only behind Northwestern and Iowa. Overall decent enough results but it sure would have been nice to have had a closer score against Iowa.

Special shout-out to Jon Dietzen who came back, had a good year and was a real savior in yesterday's game.

Coan was never cleared to play in live games.

How is it clear that Coan is the better football player? Did we ever see him play without Jonathan Taylor, Cephus, Davis, Pryor, etc? Coan had a LOT more weapons around him every single time he stepped on the field. We saw Mertz play in a Covid disrupted season, after having it himself, and with a depleated skill position group.

I know there's the long-standing old tongue-in-cheek joke about going to the 'Salad Bowl' when referring to some of the lesser bowls and playing on the traditional bowl names, but this is about as close as it gets to that from a name standpoint.

I actually thought Duke was hosting a bowl game when I saw the thread title change.

I didn't read the title but was reading the thread about coans transfer and read it initially that he selected to go to Duke lol.

Officially selected to the Duke’s Mayo Bowl. Because that’s actually a thing, apparently.

Wake Forest from the ACC.

Revenge on Nolan Groulx!

I am not gonna judge Mertz or the coaching staff at all this year. The short camp, the over two week break after the Michigan game, all the injuries and guys that missed due to Covid, it was just a total mustard truck. I mean when Garrett Groshek is your bell cow at running back and your most athletic receiver is a true freshman I'm not sure what he is supposed to do. Yeah I wished the play calling could have been more creative but when you're trotting Jack Dunn out there for 40% of the snaps there is only so much you can do. I'm glad they're going to a bowl game for no other reason than the extra reps the young guys get.

Its clear the Wisconsin (& all the Big 10 teams actually) could use the additional practice time afforded by going to a bowl game.

That said, I am surprised the Mayo Bowl was not one of the many bowl games to get cancelled this year.

I'm surprised more than 10 bowl games are being played. Beyond that the games should be cancelled for safety reasons but all schools should be afforded 11 more practice days (with full pads) for player development

So even in this crazy year, let's check out the CFP field.

Clemson ...check. OSU...check. Bama...check. Some team from the group of: other SEC team/Notre Dame/Oklahoma ...check.

This is why I just can't really get that into college football.

This. The product is stale, to say the least. Some people will try to sell me on rivalry games and winning conferences. It just doesn't appeal to me. If you really don't have a shot at winning in the end, what's the point?

What the Hell-man? All these mayo jokes.

Here's hoping the Badgers get a big lead so WF has to play ketchup all game. I don't think be able to mustard a win. A bowl victory, no matter how insignificant is one to relish in in this strange year.

Better? ;)

You didn't have to be so saucy with your response.

I'm at the point where I think going back to the pre-BCS system of individual polls choosing their national champion and having some years where there is a split champion is a better format than this CFP nonsense. No matter what happens this year and who leaves these programs for the NFL/graduation, next year's preseason polls will have Bama, Clemson, OSU, ND/Okla all somewhere in the top 6, which pretty much voids any chance a non-power conference has of finding its way into the top 4 teams. The Pac 12 is basically an afterthought right now in this process, and the Big 12 isn't far behind - so geographically more than half of the country doesn't even care about who wins the national title. The talent gap between the haves and have-nots has never been larger, even within the power conferences that continually send Clemson, Bama, and OSU and it's not healthy for college football to operate like this longterm. The SEC has enough talent where they occasionally have a team that can knock of Bama, but then those years it takes them losing multiple games to not make the CFP no matter what teams are doing across the rest of the country...CFP was supposed to be all about expanding opportunity but frankly it's limited it.

Scrapping the system that all but guarantees the same programs wind up in the final 4 unless their marquee players get injured would hopefully push programs to consistently schedule tough non-conference games on neutral fields early in the year. Knowing there isn't what are essentially automatic bids into a field of 4 for the playoff could actually push teams like Bama and Clemson to maybe play each other in September to sort out what the polls should look like at the top before conference play starts - knowing that the traditional bowl system would likely not pair them playing against each other in January.

Same here. So sick of seeing the same 3 teams every year. But that isn't going to change as long as these 4 and 5 star recruits continue to flock to those programs, all for the opportunity to more than likely sit on the bench for 4 years, when they could be starting and often starring for other programs. I mean, Alabama loses their top WR, and it doesn't really matter, because there's 7 other 4 and 5 star guys sitting behind him.

Alabama loses their top WR after having the FIRST TWO WRs chosen in the previous years draft.

It'll change when Saban retires. It's yet to be seen if Ryan Day can keep up Urban Meyer's level of consistent greatness. Dabo seems to have everything rolling at Clemson, but I bet there are a few blips on the horizon.
