Intermittent Fasting and Weight Loss

my update.

I have now lost a total of 18 lbs. Down to 177. Probably haven't been this weight in 15 years.

I don't intend to go past 175. As it is now, I'm going to have to start some kind of weight program or massive push-ups because my shoulders and chest are now looking too thin for my liking. The struggle is real! lol Still enjoying the loss of belly mass though!

Congrats!

I've read that there is no direct correlation between amount of exercise and weight loss. It sounds counterintuitive but it makes sense based on personal experience.

You're not wrong so I hope I'm not sounding defensive. My thought was that the calculator says mountain biking for 70 minutes is -1000 calories, so we'll say -800 to be fair. And the calculator says -400 for weightlifting. So I'm thinking just that -400 difference every day assuming an equal diet could well represent the difference between maintaining and loss.

But yeah I've got to be more dedicated to carrot sticks and cutting back.

Well done TurboRicky! That's a really impressive loss.

Hey is this going to continue to be a IF/Weight Loss support thread? I need one of these. I have done calorie tracking and IF before, and it works...but I always fall into my bad habits. I will weigh in, in the morning, as I have already eaten this morning.

Weakness: Dinner dates with my wife; and delicious high calorie beers.

I weighed in on Monday I think, and I think I was 274? Would like to start adding a 1 hour walk in the morning as well. My basement went from just a treadmill to a bonafide gym when corona hit, as I have added many, many things over the past 6 months, mostly for my teenage son, but I will have no excuses going forward. I will keep checking in. Looking forward to taking some lbs off.

Looking forward to this.

I fell of the wagon of the diet/exercise recently. Need to jump back on in a hurry.

Good stories all, hope it keeps up. I hit about 30 down since shutdown and am sitting around 25 now after some activities the last few weeks hurt. With no end in sight to this I plan on going more and getting close to the glory days numbers.

For me, I agree with some who've posted about how heavily working out ends up not helping as much as you'd think because it makes me hungry. Since shutdown having way more free time has allowed for easier workouts like leisurely walk/jobs or shooting hoops as opposed to normal life where you tried to cram a bunch in a short period time, which would just make me hungry and eat it all back. I've had more success with just light so you don't get the need to eat so much. But of course everyone is different.

2nd weekly fast was Tuesday, even easier than the first time. GAME's tip about having some salt for headache was a great call, I just had a few little pinches of salt throughout the day and that took care of it. For me the once a week fast is something I can do really easily so I like it. I'm going to call it Fast Tuesday.

As far as results go, it seems to be working well. I'd been eating fairly healthy and getting regular moderate exercise, and I walk about 3.5 miles per day according to my phone. Weight had been at a standstill, now after 2 24 hour fasts, I'm down 4.5 lbs. There definitely does seem to be some truth to what I'd read about how it promotes fat burning and HGH production when you fast.

I weighed in and started a fasting routine on 9/25, so what was that....Friday? I will give you my first weekly update this Friday. I am using the Fastic app, which was suggested by someone in this thread, and I am finding that it is helping keep me accountable and motivated.

So far my fasting has been as follows:

Day 1: 17 hour fast

Day 2: 18 hour fast

Day 3: 17 hour fast

Day 4: 18 hour fast

Day 5: 17 hour fast

Two more days to go and will give an update on my week 1 progress on Friday.

Recently made it to 36 lost since May. Have had some higher-carb meals lately, so have plateaued a little bit. First goal is 6 more lbs.

Final goal is to lose another 25 after that. That puts me at my wedding weight which was 29 years ago LOL.

Lots of stress lately, so that hasn't helped. Need to go balls to the wall for a few weeks. Physical coming up next Friday, so we will see what the Doctor has to say.

I’m still at it, down 37 lbs since June 20th. I’m at about a 19:5 fast lately. And walking 3 miles a day. I get full pretty quickly and don’t really have any cravings. I might be eating too many carbs but I’ve generally been around 2000 calories or less a day. Besides the weight loss, with the fasting and drinking less alcohol my quality of sleep is 100 times better too. Edited by gypcasino

18 years ago I weighed over 500 pounds. I am down to 237. Hope to drop another 30 pounds. Lost all that by mostly not eating or drinking as much. I did cut out fast food entirely. Having both my hips replaced did allow for a better exercise routine.

Well I finished my first week if intermittent fasting. Here are the results.

Starting Weight: 275

Fasting times of 17+ hours for past 6 days, and I am currently in my 7th fast, but at late last night so have to go until at least 2pm today. I dont anticipate that being a problem.

Each day it got easier to continue my fast. I definitely noticed I wasnt snacking or mindlessly eating after 6pm, which is when I ended my eating phase each day. Last night my wife and I went out as we normally do once a week. We shared an app and a cheese board. I had two pints of beer.

Weight this morning: 275.4

So it did not do much for me. I will continue to see if I can get this strategy to take some pounds off.

Starting Weight 275

Goal Weight 200

Week 1 weight loss/gain +0.4

Pounds to go: 75.4

I started doing a daily 19-hour fast on Monday, up from every third day. I've definitely been able to stick to 1800 calories per day since it's such a short eating window. I don't know if 'stomach shrinking' is a thing, but I can't pack as much into a single meal as I once could. I still get hungry around 11-2, but I think most of that has to do with 40+ years of me training myself to eat lunch around that time. I'm conditioned to be hungry then, because after about 2:00 I'm fine again.

I've moved up to a daily 19-hour fast. I think I've lost maybe 2-3 lbs but it's hard to tell. Day 7 I got tired of being hungry all the time and cheated badly. Back at it and this second week so far I haven't felt near as hungry around lunch. I'd read that after 2-3 weeks the hunger starts to go away and hopefully that's what's going on.

The biggest positive is that when I'm only eating in a five-hour window, it's not terribly hard to stick to around 1800 calories. I can still have that cocktail or a treat and I'm not way up in terms of calories per day.

I started doing this over the summer more out of curiosity than anything. A friend mentioned only eating from 12-6 and initially my reaction was "how could you ever do that?" but somehow I ended up trying it too. :)

I'll often eat a little something in the evening, but consistently not eating til 12 or 1 each day, and just drinking more water throughout the morning than I ever did before.

While the hunger doesn't necessarily go away, I was surprised how quickly it became a non-factor (especially in the morning; somehow it's easier to hang on til lunch than the evening), and I actually appreciate being able to just live with hunger rather than feeling like I need to eat the moment I feel it.

Down 18lb in 3+ months, probably haven't weighed this little since high school or early college.

I did my weekly weigh in this morning, after 4 weeks of once a week 24 hour fasts (2 this week though) I'm down 5 lbs. I was hoping for more after the hot start after the first couple weeks, but I'll take what I can get. It's easy enough so I see no reason to quit now.

  • 2 weeks later...

A few weeks into 19:5 fasting. It's become much easier to make it to dinner and not have that gnawing hunger.

But as yet no real results to show for it, even though I've been fine in terms of eating at a calorie deficit. Not really sure if I'm doing something wrong or if I just need more time.

Also a little perplexed in terms of lifting weights while fasted, or more specifically lifting and not eating anything afterward. Seems to indicate that there's a lot of muscle breakdown and that they just won't recover waiting so long to eat any protein. So it's looking more like workouts will have to move to doing more cardio and the weightlifting will have to wait until I lose the weight I want and I can transition to bulking.

My belief is intermittent fasting does not work. I mean, it does work, but it doesnt. Does that make sense? The idea of intermittent fasting is to restrict your calories. Calorie restriction works. If I am on a 18hr fast every day, but start my 6 hour eating window with a pile of pancakes and end it with a Papa Johns pizza, the reality is, I will not lose weight - and I might gain a little.

Intermittent fasting usually works because those who do it are taking necessary steps to reduce their calorie intake, if you just stuff yourself during your eating window, you will not get any results even if you adhere 100% to the fasting times.

Perhaps you should read a little on the subject. The articles generally cover the pile of pancakes theory. In reality, no diet works if you pig out.

Plus the second part is about switching what your body is burning;fat instead of sugar.
