My guess is a 90 percent chance Wicks is the pick unless someone picks him before we pick.

because a couple mocks have him at 15?. Its fun to guess, but 90% certainty is a prediction, not a guess.

For some reason the mocks have been pretty accurate when it comes to who the Brewers were looking at especially when they have had relatively high picks. I think Hiura was mocked to the Brewers quite a bit and Medeiros is another that was universally pegged as our pick even though he was rated much lower. If Wicks is the guy hopefully he pans out but I prefer a higher ceiling talent.

I don’t recall how many mocks linked us to Medeiros, if at all, but it was hardly universal.

1. I notice you didn’t mention Small because no one projected that. 2. If you look back at the thread for the Hiura draft, in the weeks leading up to the draft, there was more Adell and Beck than Hiura and a few others received more prominent mention as well. 3. I seem to remember a lot of Ray, Puk and Perez. The higher the draft pick, the easier it is to predict. 4. The Medeiros draft I believe a few places included the rumored deal the Brewers had with him in their last update, but not this far out and it was always explicitly mentioned to be a rumored deal which none of the Wicks projections have been.

Also do not recall Hiura being mocked to the brewers. I remember being shocked when he was the pick, if he was mocked all over the place, I would not have been. The brewers, like any other Front office says nothing. Minus, going to the RTBN for lunch and catching a private workout during lunch by change, there is no way to know whom the brewers are interested in.

No they have not been you are making things up to confirm your own bias.

Ray, Medieros and I'm pretty sure Jungmann were definitely mocked to the Brewers and the analysis of who the team was interested in has usually been spot on.

The only one you got right was Ray and that is because the Brewers liked him better than Lewis who they were also projected to pick along with another player or two. Medeiros was never mocked to the Brewers by anyone if you have proof then post it otherwise you are just making things up. In 2011 there was one major publication that had Jungmann all the others either had Javier Baez or Francisco Lindor as the Brewers first pick in that draft. There was only one mention of Medeiros and that was from perfect game where they mentioned him and his visit to Milwaukee during his workout that they were impressed with. So one publication mentioned Medeiros but not a single one picked him as a Brewers pick in their mocks.

Medeiros & Jungmann were both picked prior to Stearns & company arriving, not sure how relevant that really is at this point, even if the mockers did get them right.

Ray was the #5 pick, which is a lot easier to mock than the #15 pick.

None of MLB, FanGraphs, MyMLBDraft, DraftUtopia, CallToThePen, MinorLeagueMadhouse, BleacherReport (those were just the first page of search results for "2017 MLB Mock Draft") had us mocked for Keston at #9 in 2017.

Don't recall much linking us to any of Turang, Small or Mitchell prior to the last three drafts.

I did a search on all of the mock draft sites and Ray is the only one of the 3 he names he got right. Medeiros was only mentioned by perfect game and that is it. Jungmann was only picked by one of the major publications everyone else had the Brewers taking someone else. So yeah Jungmann was mocked to the Brewers by one so partially false there that is the best I can do with that one. Turang, Small and Mitchell were not mocked at all to the Brewers.

Regarding Medieros, there was a lot of smoke on him for sure before the draft. They worked him out (I think at Miller Park) and he was connected to the Brewers by the media. I don’t have a link but I recall it well. If you want to find it, you could try to read the JSOnline in the days leading up to the draft. I’m pretty sure Haudricourt was one of my sources on this.

Regarding Corey Ray, I was especially upset because we took him fifth overall. In other words we had a terrible year the prior year, and many of us on this board were anticipating the high pick for months and months. To draft Ray so high was an extreme disappointment. Good athlete who was always limited. I don’t think any of his detractors thought he’d ever be this bad, though. I hope the Brewers learned their lesson even if that was pre-Stearns. You can learn more from mistakes than good choices in many ways.

I had hope for Ray even this spring. But it seems increasingly pointless with him.

Yes, Keith Law and I’m sure others correctly mocked Medieros to Milwaukee but it was because there were literally photos of Kodi posing at Miller Park from before the draft. Obviously guys workout at a team’s facility that ultimately get drafted by other teams, but the late signs were strong between Medieros and the Crew. The current front office seemingly keeps things much more under wraps.

More on Medieros, this was how specific the reporting from two weeks before the draft got…

Medeiros faced four batters on Thursday in front of scouts from the Brewers organization. The batters, who are also trying to impress scouts for an opportunity to be drafted, are either out of high school or have played on the collegiate level. Medeiros struck out two and induced two ground ball outs.

You answered your own question. Your examples were fourth round picks, not the 15th overall pick. Besides, they have more electric stuff than Wicks has.

If they had more electric stuff back when they were in college, how come they lasted until the 4th round?

The answer is that they didn't have more electric stuff - some good pro pitching coaches made some adjustments with them that made their stuff more electric. My post was in response to a comment that Wicks didn't have upside; my analogy was that Burnes and Bieber weren't thought to have much upside coming out of college, and that some adjustments and development brought out that upside. If Wicks didn't have some upside, he'd be talked about as a 4th round pick.

Burnes was actually projected to go much higher.

Yes and no. Burnes wasn’t projected as a 1st rounder, but he was ranked #39 by MLB.com and #57 by Baseball America. Regardless of those public rankings he ultimately signed for a modest $536,400 which was actually below six other Brewers selections in the 2016 draft class including Corey Ray ($4.8 million), Chad McClanahan ($1.2 million), Lucas Erceg ($1.15 million), Mario Feliciano ($800k), Braden Webb ($700k), and Payton Henry ($551K).

Back to this year’s draft, Colton Cowser has some similarities to Garrett Mitchell. Good athlete with enough speed to hopefully stick in CF and seems to have solid raw power that his current swing approach doesn’t fully tap into. I am not sure if he even makes it to the Brewers selection, but he certainly fits the style of player they seem into. Not sure a Mitchell clone would be the best use of resources, but if they think he’s the real deal then it would be hard to pass him up.

To be fair, you do have guys like Woodruff, who are touted as upside college arms but fall because the college results don't match the stuff.

I like the Turang and Mitchell picks. I'd like to target guys with good line drives and easy power, not necessarily pure sluggers. I think of the Overbay and Cirillo types as being the future MLB response to Statcast-derived pitching. So basically pure hitters that make contact rather than launch angle studs.

Burnes did have good stuff based on all the reports put out about him and there was talk that the Brewers got a steal. Wicks’ profile wouldn’t be so bad if he were taken later. Not at 15. Bieber I didn’t read up on when he was drafted so I don’t know. But he wasn’t a first round pick.

People argued with me like crazy on Corey Ray. We can agree to disagree on Wicks. You have to match skill set with the spot a guy is drafted. Wicks at 15 would not be an inspiring pick. Doesn’t mean he won’t be good, but his numbers and arm don’t suggest that. I actually think we are too smart to take him so hopefully this is moot.

I’m honestly not sure what our FO had a tendency towards. In the 4 drafts this current FO has been in charge of, two of them had guys fall further than expected (Mitchell and Turang), and two in which they made picks that no one had expected (Hiura and Small).

I'd be OK with Ford, out of curiosity because I'm not a subscriber how far to they have Binelas falling?

Didn't even have him going in the 2nd round and that's all the further they went.

In their BA 500 rankings they have Binelas ranked #77, actually behind Ozaukee’s Noah Miller (#74).

On Keith Law’s podcast today with Jonathan Mayo, The Keith Law Show, they have a good discussion about the overall draft class. Law mentions that college pitching typically gets pushed up the draft board, but this year he said he’s heard from team sources that outside of Leiter and Rocker it isn’t a good year to draft college pitching in the top 15 picks. He said most of the next tier of college pitching belongs in the range from picks #20-to-#40.

I think I agree with Law on that, I have a hard time wanting the Brewers to commit an almost $4 million signing bonus to anyone among the secondary tier of college pitching. Now if they could cut a deal with one of those pitchers and use the savings to swing big with their next couple of picks then it would at least be more palatable. I’d still very much prefer a position player with the first selection.

I really hope that the brewers get a corner IF early in the draft. Im not normally a big position guy in the MLB draft but the only way to stop having to get guys like Tellez or signing big $ FA's is to develop your own and they have shown no interest in doing that since Prince
