Brewers DFA Smoak; Get Vogelbach

Eye Black

Just realized that Justin Smoak rated as the second slowest player in MLB this year ahead of only Albert Pujols (per Statcast sprint speed for 2020). Gyorko is the 7th slowest player. Vogelbach is 25th slowest which is very close to Omar Narvaez (31st). Braun and Sogard are near the bottom in sprint speed this year as well.

The Brewers appear to have one of the slower collections of position players in baseball.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Not a very athletic roster when you look at it even though many can play all over.
"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Arcia seems pretty damn slow too...

Arcia really seems like more than anything he has an awkward stride. He seems like he's got a pretty decently athletic slender build, so he shouldn't be as slow as he is. He just never looks comfortable running.

Mike Cameron had a long graceful stride that never looked like it took a lot of effort And he covered a ton of ground. Carlos Gomez covered a lot of ground but he always looked like he was running like a cheetah. Different running styles for different guys...

Corey Hart was always an interesting one to me. I think it was just his length, but he always looked like he was running at 70% speed to me... but he could still move!

Not to get too far off subject but how much does speed really matter in today's game? The shifts make it less important on defense and stealing bases is hardly a major part of any offense. It's still better to have it than not but I think the importance of speed compared to other traits has diminished.
There needs to be a King Thames version of the bible.

You need speed to take extra bases and it can help a lot on defense in the outfield.

For a groundball hitter like Arcia speed also matters in avoiding double plays. Some are unavoidable no matter how fast you are of course, but they're so detrimental to offense that even legging out a couple that a slower player wouldn't can make a difference.

I also believe that the huge number of infield hits the Brewers have suffered has something to do with speed. Of course I cannot prove it.

I was a very slow second baseman, and I had to play a step or two back to have a chance at grounders that anyone with normal speed wouldn't have had to. Made a difference.
