Phelps to Phillies

David Phelps has given up 5 hits, including 3 home runs, and 3 walks for 5 total earned runs over 4 appearances (just 2.1 innings pitched) since joining the Phillies.

Maybe the Phils bullpen woes are contagious.

Not just “at Night” anymore.

Trade is complete

Teenagers/turning 20 Pitchers 2 years in the minors experience. 6'3", 6', and 6'3" That seems a great upside haul. Really enjoy that they have 3 Pitchers to continue this new Pitchers renaissance they are brewing. I can't wait for the return for Hader's future trade, as I think they'll get the bats the system and team desperately need. Using your high trade value for that and the lower value Phelps types on lottery pitchers or pitchers in general. The idea I believe may have come from the Royals WS win in theory. Elite back of the pen and hope you can survive through the first 5IP with what Starters you are having. The fact the Woodruff and now Burnes are becoming that mold gives you technically 2/3rds of a Starting rotation 7games series ability to do just that. Anyway, bending back towards the Phelps side, Quite awesome imo get for a rental pitcher. Traded just at the right time as the bad Phelps is what the Phillies are getting.

You play to win the game. NEVER sacrifice the now for the uncertainty of the future. That will always get you no where.

From 2010-14, the Cubs lost 464 games, 2nd most in MLB. They sacrificed those years for the uncertainty of the future & won the World Series in 2016. They got somewhere.

From 2010-14 the Astros lost 502 games, the most in MLB. They sacrificed those years for the uncertainty of the future & won the World Series in 2017. They got somewhere.

White Sox didn’t want to sacrifice the now for the uncertainty of the future a few years ago.....

Man...that Sox team would be that much more dangerous with Anderson sliding over to 2nd and Tatis Jr playing short.

Yeah, you look at many of the playoff teams this year and their rosters reflect the potential value of sell offs of veterans for prospects. The Padres as noted benefited from getting Tatis for James Shields, but the White Sox themselves though have done well this year in part due to key players from the Quintana and Eaton trades.

It's not easy to get this right of course; the Marlins didn't do as well as they surely hoped in the Yelich and Stanton deals, but the guys they got for Ozuna were solid (it still remains to be seen how Jazz Chisholm pays off after they got him for Gallen). But clearly sometimes sacrificing the now for the future indeed does pay off, and I don't know how you can say otherwise.

Now that the regular season is complete, I figured it was worth the time to revisit this deadline deal. Man, how great does this deal look now? Phelps simply implodes for the Phillies after the trade, and literally helps the Brewers make the playoffs with his performance there. Meanwhile, the Crew gets three lottery ticket arms (hopefully we cash in on one of these guys), and yet we still sneak into the playoffs over the Phillies.

We all know that many of the moves DS made this past offseason did not pan out like anyone wanted them to, but this move is looking genius - and that's even without knowing if any of the three young arms will ever pan out.

I'll put on my tinfoil hat as well. I think pretty much everyone Stearns signed this year was signed with the intention of trading them at the deadline if they showed any life at all. Then covid happened and there wasn't time for anything to work out and most of the guys were a total failure. I think this was a total stealth rebuild effort that didn't pan out. But we're in the playoffs somehow so there was no restocking but.. playoffs!

I was really impressed by Phelps in his time here, and while trading someone like him makes a ton of sense and I was in favor of it, I also thought he looked so good that the $4m team option started looking attractive so I would've been fine with him staying too. Good thing Stearns is more decisive than me!

But he looked so terrible for the Phillies that there is no way that they pick up that option, and he isn't going to come close to making that on the open market. I wonder if Stearns would consider a second go-around with Phelps? At the right price, why not?

Exactly what I was thinking. Maybe he'll turn into our next Jordan Lyles? The guy that only seems to pitch well when he's wearing a Brewers uniform? Then, maybe we can flip him again next July for a few more lottery ticket arms! Might be worth a try?

I also didn't realize how poorly Phelps pitched for Philly. In the 6 games he gave up runs the Phillies were 2-4. You could hypothetically argue Phelps cost them a playoff position.

Stearns traded David Phelps to Philly for a playoff spot and 3 lottery tickets. That has to be a top 3 trade in his tenure..

If the Phillies decline his option I am 100% on board giving him the exact same contract and doing it all over again.

Phelps is available. So is Chase Anderson. Either might be worth a look in spring training. Pitching in the tough AL East Anderson's big weakness. the HR ball, was exposed, allowing 11 including 5 to the Yankees, but he still fanned 38 in 33 innings.
