Domingo Santana DFA

BruisedCrew

Indians have designated Domingo Santana for assignment.

Maybe the Brewers should try to get him. He’d fit right in with the journeyman approach.

I should have flown the sarcasm flag higher.

:) that's why we post those in blue, I have been on this board too long and it is plausible that some would actually want to see if he get some miller park magic back.

I guess I don’t post here enough to know the protocol.

I think Santana could be the spark that propels the Crew to the World Series

I think some poster just told us how big of a mistake it was that he's gone not too long ago.

Do we have the room to sign a guy to use strictly as a DH? Braun and Hiura need to be someplace when they aren't in the field. Turn the page on Domingo, no need to get him back again just because he is an ex-brewer.

Domingo is hitting .157/.298/.286 in 84 PAs this year, good for a 63 wRC+. His BABIP is terrible so you might expect some regression, but he has also made terrible contact. Exit velocity is right at Eric Sogards career average. People remember 2017 Santana, but he's not that guy. I'd argue, and argued it at the time as well, that he never really was. Now of course there is a decent chance that he'll hit more than Jace Peterson, but I don't really see the point in signing a DH-only player who is, at best, a league average hitter.

There's a lot of guys that are hitting terribly that might work it out with some consistent at bats and work with a coach. We already have a bunch of hitters in that category though, and it's hard to see what adding another one, who has zero or negative defensive value, would accomplish.

The guy you might want on a waiver claim is the catcher the Phillies just DFAd: https://www.baseball-reference.com/players/g/grullde01.shtml

He's a 24 year old catcher, had OPS over 800 in AA and AAA the previous two years.

I'm not necessarily advocating to pick him up, but it's not like he *has* to DH everyday. You can still give preference to Braun and Hiura on the days they're not in the field.

I think there's a good chance he falls flat on his face the whole year, but these are the reasons I would think about giving it a shot...

It's not a huge game changer, but nudging a 73 wRC+ closer to 100 would be nice.

Santana is a 63 wRC+ hitter so far but who has been a slightly above average hitter in the past (including 2019) and is projected to be an average hitter RoS. Brewers DHs so far are at 73 wRC+, and most of the people likely to fill that role (Braun, Hiura, Narvaez, Smoak) are also guys who were above average hitters in 2019 and who are projected for roughly league average going forward. So while not all struggles have the same causes, and some might be more or less likely to be fixed, it would essentially be adding more of the same.

I think Domingo is rather stinky but I would also rather see him than Jace Peterson.

I would rather see Domingo Santana play right field than Jace Peterson, but that's just me.

I don't know ... at least Jace Peterson can play defense. There is absolutely no doubt at this point that Domingo is a terrible defender, and his lack of offensive production this year, along with the Mariners giving up on him completely despite what look to be acceptable numbers last year, is a pretty big red flag.
