2020-08-15: Brewers (Houser) at Cubs (Rea) [Brewers win, 6-5 in 9 innings -- Crew tallies 6 runs without any HRs; Urías w/ 3 hit day]

Eye Black

Playing from behind again.

The Brewers have scored a grand total of 2 runs in the first inning, 2 runs in the second , 5 runs in the third, and 3 runs in the fourth. Not going to win very often that way.

To put this in perspective, the Cardinals, after not playing for two weeks, scored as many in their first inning back as the Brewers have scored in their 37 first and second innings.

Looks like it will be a bullpen game for the Brewers too.

And after last night it figures to be the bottom of the bullpen barrel. Get Gyorko ready.

It's still reasonable to debate whether Houser is better suited for a pen or starters role, despite those who wanted to put it to rest two starts into the season.

I think both sides have merit.

I mean both sides have some merit, sure. But it’s pretty easy to look at his numbers and see that he is elite relieving. As a starter? Just a guy.

"This is a very simple game. You throw the ball, you catch the ball, you hit the ball. Sometimes you win, sometimes you lose, sometimes it rains." Think about that for a while.

Unfortunately Burnes and Peralta have profiled that way as well. Brewers need two of those three to develop into competent starters.

Burnes I think has a good shot at being a high end starter. Peralta seems like a multi inning reliever to me.

Probably our best shot at maximizing the talent of these guys is finding a way to use all these guys for 3 to 4 innings at a pop and not necessarily having to pigeonhole them into specific starter or reliever roles.

I remain a proponent of how valuable Houser can be in relief, but also believe he deserved an opportunity to start this season until proven otherwise. At some point they need to develop some guys into starters since they obviously can’t all be multi-inning relievers.

Not just “at Night” anymore.
