2020-08-09: Reds (Gray) at Brewers (Woodruff) [Brewers win, 9-3 -- Hiura, Yelich, and Smoak with big days offensively]

Eye Black
Taking a flier on a Smoak or Morrison is to be expected with a small market team but you just cannot have 4 or 5 of these type of guys starting everyday. With limited financial resources we need to do a better job drafting hitters so we don't have to rely on journeyman every offseason to fill holes.

Third base is understandable since there were no good options without paying someone big. First base was deciding to dump Thames, a contributor and popular player, in order to save $2M.

Attanasio was really stingy last offseason and it really cost us.

I remember when people in the past always talked about how easy it is to find a good first baseman because there are so many out there. Outside of Thames for a couple seasons and Aguilar, it has been a continuous revolving door. Since Fielder left, we really haven’t had a solid first baseman that we could rely on day in and day out. Obviously it would be a step down from Prince when he left, but we have struggled to find a long term replacement since then and that is just a position you need to get good production from. It sure would be nice to have Garrett COOOOOOPER back on this team to have that void filled for the next 5+ seasons.

Dumping Thames was one of the weirdest moves of the offseason. He was a great lefty bat at 1B. I’m guessing they wanted a righty bat and opted for Smoak (who doesn’t have a terrible track record) to replace the lefty Thames at a similar cost?

Regarding the revolving door, I thought Cory Hart was actually a legit replacement for Fielder...and then he got hurt.

I think it was just a matter of cutting costs and they were looking to save a few million at every position possible.

Yelich

Literally the first ball that Yelich has turned on and pulled hard this season, including the intrasquad games. Hopefully a baby step toward getting back to something resembling normal.

Going to be a lot of innings from both bullpens today.

Note: If I raise something as a POSSIBILITY that does not mean that I EXPECT it to happen.

One pitcher getting plenty of calls of pitches off the plate called as strikes and the other can’t get calls when they are actually on the corner.

Umpire has been terrible both ways. Let's not do this.

Garcia was another trash signing.

Based on 30 at bats???

He’s a career .270 hitter with good power and above average defense. He’s the best option we have in CF with Cain opting out. He’s played really well defensively this year. But yea, we should prolly freak out over the 30 AB.

The thing is, we’ve done that before (Weeks, Fielder, Hardy, Hart, Braun to name a few.). And when we did that and had some success, all I’d read about is how we really need to focus on drafting good, young, controllable arms that we can depend on for years to anchor our staff.

It’s just not easy to draft a great team. You really just draft what you can with the knowledge you have from scouting and you, literally, have to hope and pray from that moment forward that some of those players will blossom into major league players, never mind being superstars.

Until the Brewers really put some focus into drafting — better scouts (is there such a thing????), more money to sign international players, and really, REALLY making sure (ha, like it’s that simple....) the players they draft are the right pick.

Watch Sogard hit a granny and ruin the rally.

Not quite.

I was pretty close though.

Garcia was a very good signing. I think if they were to play a full season, he would be one of the more underrated signings of the entire offseason. He will get hot at some point. The entire offense is just struggling right now including him.

Garcia is 29 and has had one good season, a couple of decent seasons, and a few pretty bad ones. At his best he’s nothing special, and he has looked pretty ordinary so far.
