Fortunately, if you live in a cold-weather state or just don't get outside much, SunnyD is loaded with it and is best consumed by the pint.

it's also loaded with an insane amount of sugar...

There's also a specific physical trait that limits one's ability to produce Vitamin D via sun exposure (though it's less common in the upper midwest ;)). As a result I've taken a vitamin D supplement daily since moving from the sunbelt; perhaps SunnyD is a missed opportunity.

It's funny I prefer Sunny D to actual orange juice. It's also surprisingly less calories. I feel like a child using/buying it but it is what it is. Can't speak for sugar off the top of my head but I'd guess actual orange juice (especially the ones that aren't 100%) has it's share in too.

Which is a short way of saying most people with any kind of remotely normal food intake get plenty of what they need and supplements are a waste.

There is no vitamin D in a hamburger, fried perch, or french fries and a cup of cheddar cheese (132g) has 4% of the USRDA of Vitamin D.

Hey, there's probably SOME in the tartar. :)

Nope

Or it could mean ICU beds are being used because they're available, and same is true of regular hospital beds. Maybe not all ICU patients actually need to be there. Not saying that's the case, but would not surprise me. Rule #1 is always follow the money. Hospitals are hurting, and if they have space why not fill it? We'll find out soon enough I guess.

Are you suggesting that they are putting people in ICU that don't require intensive care? And that this generates additional revenue for the hospital?

My dad was admitted to ICU because it was empty, and the senior care wing was full. They did not bill medicare for icu care, they just used the room. This is very common, so yes, we have no idea how many ICU beds filled today actually need icu level care.

Also, non-icu hospitalizations could be up if enough beds were available. Nirhing nefarious there, if it's a close call or someone really wants to be hospitalized, why not use an empty bed? Insurance companies aren't going to fight anything covid related, so why not.

State Fair hospital is still empty. Over a week ago we were told hospitals were at or near max, so you do the math. That could all change this week, we'll see.

In Illinois, 50% of confirmed cases are in those under the age of 40. But only 2% of deaths are in those under the age of 40. If you expand to the age of 50, 65% of cases are in those under 50 and 5% of deaths are in those under 50.

10% of confirmed cases are in those 70+. But 70% of deaths are by those over the age of 70.

The young people are the ones spreading it, and those over 70 need to stay at home and not interact with those under 50.

Correlation does not imply causation, but looking at the WI cases by age group it's pretty hard to argue that going back to school isn't the cause of the spike in cases, especially those in the 18-24 age group.

For the rest, if it wasn't going back to school, it was Labor Day weekend parties and socialization.

?? Nine people there currently, and they've had patients there since early this past week, I believe:

9. Exactly. Statewide crisis it is not.

Nine is more than zero. [sarcasm]But I’m sure they could clear the squatters from the ICU beds if need be.[/sarcasm] ;)

About 2-3 weeks ago UW was at max, whereas if an emergency such as heart attack or car accident came in they wouldn't have beds for them after dealing with the emergency so would have to keep them in that room until they figured something out the next day. My understanding some nights now it is and some nights it's not as of now. Of course not all are covid, but those extra covid people is what's eating up the normal wiggle room.

And remember hospitals have been converting more and more normal rooms over to ICU for covid in prep of this. But yea, really nothing to worry about here and it's not a crisis, I'm sure it's just greedy doctors. We're not burying our head in the sand at all, we're rounding the corner.

This is 100% true.

My Mom had a blood clot near her heart, needed to be airlifted to UW Hospital, but there was no place for her, the place was full. She ended up waiting almost 36 hours for surgery that under normal circumstances, would have been performed immediately upon the discovery. She ended up being transferred by ambulance instead, from the Southwest part of the state, to Madison.

It was scarey, but it all turned out fine...

Who is saying it's a crisis? I think most people think it's a potential crisis. Can we at least admit it's very serious? WI lost over 700 people to Covid in October alone. An average of 22.77 deaths per day have been reported over the past 30 days. Thirty days ago the figure stood at 7.03.

And it's less about beds and more about staffing. You can probably always find a place to put someone but you need people to be able to take care of that person.

My younger son's daycare is closed for at least two weeks for staff cases. I've been seeing more and more these. I feel school may be coming soon, which will be devastating.

If I recall correctly you work in schools too. Something that's popped in my head is wondering if schools will try to get to thanksgiving then shutdown til at least after New Year? Nobody has every told me that, just a scenario I've thought of in my head so I was curious if you or anyone else has heard that idea talked about? Assuming a downward trend doesn't start by then, that is.

That is what a lot of colleges are already doing but the college break is longer. Not sure on elementary and high school. My hometown's school (small town in northwest WI) had to go all online recently because they couldnt get enough teachers. I am guessing this will be happening more and more.

I think that's the hope, that in-person schooling can hang on as best it can for districts that are doing so until the holidays, then potentially shift to all elearning into early 2021 as conditions hopefully improve on the medical system strain and faculty/staff availability fronts - then they can transition back to in-person soon after the holiday break to get through the rest of the school year without further delays. It's possible adding a few weeks' time of across the board elearning will help districts transition school use to actually get more kids back in the classroom - specifically the district my kids are in has been full in person for K-3, and 4 day/week 4-8 grade, with highschoolers in person only 1 day / week since the high school space is being used by middle schoolers to spread the in-person kids and faculty out more.

That's what they should be thinking, at least. Even during this fall's spike, there is tremendous pressure among larger districts that have been full elearning all fall in my area (i.e. MPLS/St. Paul) to start getting kids back in school in person - especially at the elementary school level. The staffing issue for teachers/faculty being exposed to COVID is real, but that exposure is largely occurring outside of the classroom - same as the teachers/faculty who are elearning only being exposed in the community. This fall spike isn't due to schools being in session, but it puts a lot of strain on them just the same.

And let's be honest - elementary and middle school for December and January during non-pandemic years is pretty much a bunch of holiday programs and planning for holiday programs/activities anyways. I think our district already had just about 2 weeks of the calendar blocked off for a holiday break around Christmas and New Year's when this year started, so adding a week on the front or back end of that time to do all elearning should in theory get faculty/staff caseloads reset to much more manageable levels.

My district was dangerously close to shutting down for two weeks right before Halloween. We had 5 teachers out the 2 weeks prior, and anymore would have meant that we were virtual. 5 was our max we could cover for since we have zero subs. Subs have decided it wasn't worth it to come back in the schools for the $ they make. So all we have is other teachers to cover for other teachers during their one prep time per day. It was horrible. All 5 teachers are back today, so we are back to full strength. I'm pretty sure that we will stay in person 5 days a week, but there are 2 things that could change that.

1. We have an excessive number of teachers quarantined/waiting for test results/positive test results

2. Evers shuts us down
